Introducing the Bloody Maria, a south-of-the-border twist on the classic Bloody Mary and its distant cousin the Bloody Caesar

The Bloody Maria drink utilizes tequila to compliment the earthiness of the tomato juice, spiciness of the hot sauce and horseradish sauce, and the brightness of the lime.

Bloody Mary With Tequila

The Bloody Maria, also called a Mexican Bloody Mary or Tequila Mary, isn’t as popular as the Bloody Mary but it should be!

What is the difference between a Bloody Maria vs Bloody Mary? Both are savory cocktails distinguished by the featured spirit; one uses vodka and the other tequila.

Both are seasoned with Worcestershire sauce and spices, and garnished with a variety of different accoutrements. This ‘Bloody Mary With Tequila’ will quickly become your next brunch staple.

Garnish Ideas

One of the best things about a cocktail is the garnish! We tend to keep it simple, based on what’s in the refrigerator, but the more the merrier! Here are some popular Bloody Maria garnishes.

Mixologist Tips

  • To ensure an ice-cold Bloody Maria Mix, pre-chill the tomato juice.
  • Always use fresh lime juice. Bottled juice isn’t as refreshing and does have an “off” taste.
  • Before you pour the drink in a glass, taste it to see if anything needs to be adjusted. Add extra tequila, hot sauce, horseradish, etc.
  • Don’t like a thick mix? Throw it through a mesh strainer after mixing.
  • To make a large batch, throw all the ingredients into a pitcher and pour over ice, once ready to serve. Keep the same proportions as a single drink.

Types of Tequila

For tequila novices, you many be wondering what kind of tequila works best with a Bloody Maria. Truth be told, it depends on what tequila profile you’d like regardless of what you’re mixing it with.

Blanco -Also known as silver tequila, Blanco is our go-to tequila varietal 99% of the time due to its pure un-aged flavor. Our favorite tequila brands: 1800, Lobos 1707 Tequila, and Don Julio.

Reposado – Reposado has a softer and smoother finish than blanco as it’s aged in oak barrels subduing the the strong agave flavor.

Añejo – Aged 1-3 years in oak barrels, Añejo has the most dominant flavor profile. It’s typically reserved for sipping vs. mixing.

If you’re into Mezcal you can use it with success.
