Each season I share the best and most wearable fashion trends for women over 40. Anyone at any age can wear these trends but these are the ones that more mature women can actually wear and feel amazing in. As with all trends, you should pick and choose the ones you love the most and then aim to give the trends your very own spin…make them your own! You also do NOT have to try ANY of these trends. I just want to make sure you have all the resources you need to be your most stylish self! Luckily, this year’s fall fashion trends are exciting, nostalgic, and super easy to wear! 😉

If you missed the spring and summer trends, make sure you check out this post because a lot of those trends will continue into the fall! If you’re looking to elevate your fall wardobre, make sure you check out our Fall Capsule Wardrobe here.

1) Fired Up!

Over the past year, pink has completely taken over runways, street style, and, well…the world (hi, Barbie!). But pink is stepping aside this fall for bold, bright red. We saw it on SO many runway shows like Stella McCartney, Hermes, Alexander McQueen, and more. Red can be a tricky color to wear. But the good news is that there are SO many shades of this hue so you can find one that works for your skin tone so it’s actually very wearable.

If red isn’t your favorite, don’t worry! Some other color trends we saw while scouring the fall runways were burgundy (which is technically a shade of red 😉 ), yellow, metallics, and white and black (especially together).

Anyone else fired up for the biggest color trend of the fall/winter season?

2) Spot On

Similar to color trends, we love to find the best and most wearable prints as well. This year, we’re going to see a lot of fun polka dots! We even predict that this trend will carry over to spring too. Polka dots are an accessible, wearable print that (when done properly) can be very elegant. Although some of the runway examples above show large, over-the-top dots, we suggest finding a polka dot print that’s a smaller scale so it’s easier to style. We linked a few options below that would be easy to incorporate into your wardrobe. If polka dot doesn’t feel like you, tartan/plaid was another big print trend we saw as well.

3) SO Hip!

We LOVE this trend! Peplum hems help create the illusion of that coveted hourglass silhouette and are just so flattering. On the runways, we saw flouncy peplum hems, structured nipped-in waists with wide flared-out peplums, subtle peplums, and dramatic peplums. We linked a few peplum options below if you want to add a new piece to your fall wardrobe but you can also create the look of a peplum hem on your own. One way is to take a longline blazer or A-line dress and belt it at the waist. The belt and longer length and A-line should naturally create that peplum shape. Yep, it’s that easy! If you want to see more peplum hems, check out Balmain’s runway shots.

By the way, if you don’t already know your body shape, we have a helpful post on how to determine your body shape here. It will help you learn what clothes will fit and flatter YOUR body the most.

4) Power Play

We told you these trends were nostalgic…anyone remember the giant shoulder pads of the 80s? This year on the runways, we saw lots of strong shoulders. Especially in outerwear like blazers and coats, which makes this a great trend to try for the winter season. We also saw elevated, strong suiting, pinstripes, and neckties. Suiting gets an upgrade every year and this year we’re loving what we’re seeing! If you want to see more power play suiting, check out the Saint Laurent fall runway shots.

5) Back to Basics

This fall/winter we’re getting back to basics! Classic jeans, basic blazers, tank tops, mini skirts, maxi skirts, midi skirts, chic pants, etc. all took center stage in the fall runway shows. The key to nailing this trend is to focus on minimalism and elevated basics. If you’ve heard the term quiet luxury or stealth wealth over the past few months…that’s basically what this is! The idea is to give off the look of elegance and sophistication, in an understated way. And, the focus is more on the quality of the timeless pieces. Gone are the days of loud over-the-top logos, prints, and bold designer pieces. We’re stepping into an era of quieter, more sophisticated fashion and we’re loving it! If you need ideas or are looking for some high-quality basics for fall, make sure you check out this post next!
