Media Bias Fact Check selects and publishes fact checks from around the world. We only utilize fact-checkers who are either a signatory of the International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN) or have been verified as credible by MBFC. Further, we review each fact check for accuracy before publishing. We fact-check the fact-checkers and let you know their bias. When appropriate, we explain the rating and/or offer our own rating if we disagree with the fact-checker. (D. Van Zandt)

FALSE
Claim via Social Media: New York City is provided up to $10,000 in pre-paid debit cards to migrants.

Check Your Fact rating: Mostly False (The claim is missing context. While the cards do contain some money, the average balance would be $350.56 per person, or $1,440 per family of four per month.)

FACT CHECK: How Much Money Is New York City Giving To Migrants In Prepaid Debit Cards?

BLATANT
LIE
Claim via Social Media: During a speech at CPAC 2024, former president Donald Trump referred to his wife Melania by the name Mercedes.

Snopes rating: False (He referred to Mercedes Schlapp, who was in attendance. She served in the Trump Administration as White House director of strategic communications.)

No, Trump Did Not Refer To His Wife Melania as ‘Mercedes’ at CPAC 2024

BLATANT
LIE
Claim via Social Media: The states that have 97% of guns are the states with the least amount of gun violence.

Politifact rating: False (The map used was created by a Medium blogger in 2017 to show the results of the 2016 presidential election by congressional district, not gun violence statistics. States with more gun ownership and laxer gun laws report higher levels of firearm deaths. Further, the leading cause of gun deaths in the U.S. are suicides, not homicides.)

More gun ownership does not lead to less gun violence

MISLEADING Claim via Social Media: “Hundreds of millions of people were used as lab rats and now the truth that WE ALL ALREADY KNEW can no longer be denied,” suggesting a new study proves that “experimental” COVID-19 vaccines are unsafe.

FactCheck.org rating: Misleading (An international study of around 99 million people confirmed known serious side effects of COVID-19 vaccination. It also identified a possible relationship between the first dose of the Moderna vaccine and a small risk of a neurological condition. Social media posts about the study left out information on the vaccines’ benefits and the rarity of the side effects.)

Study Largely Confirms Known, Rare COVID-19 Vaccine Side Effects

BLATANT
LIE
Claim by Sean Parnell (R): Nevada database glitch showing voters cast ballots when they didn’t is evidence that voting by mail is “the largest source of potential voter fraud.”

PolitiFact rating: False (The Nevada secretary of state said the glitch had nothing to do with vote tabulation and did not affect the election results.)

A Nevada glitch does not equal mail ballot fraud

FALSE (International: Israel): International Ice Hockey Federation banned Israel from competitions

USA Today rating: False
