Claim via Social media: Sweetgum balls contain the same active ingredient that Tamiflu contains, which is shikimic acid; It kills viruses including SARS-CoV-2

Health Feedback rating: Inaccurate (Shikimic acid is a starting material in the industrial manufacture of oseltamivir, marketed as Tamiflu. The two chemicals are different and don’t behave the same way. Shikimic acid isn’t considered to be an effective antiviral treatment.)

Sweetgum balls don’t contain Tamiflu’s active ingredient and there’s no evidence of an antiviral effect against COVID-19

MISLEADING Claim by Joe Biden (D): “Two years ago this week, 18 million people were out of work. Now the — that number is under 1.6 million.”

FactCheck.org rating: Misleading (According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the number of people “out of work” — or officially unemployed — in the U.S. in January 2021 was about 10.2 million, and the number in December 2022 was 5.7 million. A White House spokesperson told us Biden was referring to the number of people receiving unemployment insurance benefits. And he noted that Biden was including pandemic unemployment insurance programs. By that measure, and with those caveats, the statistic cited by the president would be nearly accurate.)

FALSE Claim by Public Interest Legal Foundation: In California, there were “10 million mail ballots unaccounted for” in the November midterm election.

PolitiFact rating: False (California election officials sent out about 22 million ballots in November’s midterm election, and about 9.8 million votes were cast by mail. An additional 1.4 million voters cast ballots in person. Experts said voters who skipped the election likely put their unused ballots in the trash.)

Millions of California ballots were simply unused, not ‘unaccounted for,’ experts say

FALSE (International: Russia): Claim by Sergey Lavrov: “We do not interfere in the internal affairs [of other countries], while President Macron’s statement clearly indicates that France regards such interference as possible and resorts to it.”

POLYGRAPH.info rating: False (Russia routinely interferes.)
