The weather is getting colder, and that means jumper season has most definitely arrived!

With rising energy costs and falling temperatures, warm clothing has never been more attractive as a way to stay comfortable and keep the bills down.  Add in the fact that Christmas jumpers are growing in popularity every year, and it’s easy to see why the shops are full of cosy sweaters right now.

What is cashmere?

Cashmere is a type of wool.  It is sourced from specific breeds of goat, including pashmina goats and cashmere goats.  The fleece has a soft undercoat which is used to make fabrics for cashmere clothing and textiles.

Cashmere has fantastic insulating properties that are far superior to sheep’s wool.  For such a warm fabric, it’s very lightweight and has natural stretch, so you won’t feel constricted when wearing it.

Synthetic fabrics are notorious for their inability to let your skin breathe.  By contrast, the natural fibres make cashmere a breathable fabric with moisture wicking properties.  Wear it next to your skin and you can avoid trapped moisture and overheating.

Hypoallergenic

Still on the comfort theme, cashmere is ideal for sensitive skins. Those superfine fibres create a much smoother fabric which shouldn’t cause irritation.  If wool clothing makes you itch, cashmere is a great alternative.

Cashmere also does not contain lanolin, which gives it hypoallergenic properties.  If you’re an allergy sufferer, or buying baby clothing, cashmere could be ideal.

Good looks

This is another key reason why everyone loves cashmere.  The beautifully soft, fine fabric drapes elegantly, making it a flattering choice for all shapes and sizes.

And of course, cashmere is a luxury fabric.  The painstaking process of fibre collection and small yields is what gives cashmere clothing a higher price tag, but as with anything, you get what you pay for.  Cashmere certainly isn’t a fast fashion candidate; think of it instead as an investment piece that will last for years and help the planet by reducing your clothing consumption.

Crease-resistant

Cashmere doesn’t wrinkle easily.  This means you can keep ironing to a minimum, and it also makes it an ideal fabric for travelling.
