Tesla fleet charges Coral Gables transit

The City of Coral Gables has upgraded its fleet of Freebee with five new electric Teslas.

Switching up from the open-air GEM Cars to the Teslas Model Y, the vehicles offer connections to the Coral Gables Trolley system as well as to five municipal parking garages and 12 surface lots.

The city first partnered with Freebee in 2017 to provide a more convenient, sustainable and connected future. The rideshare service offers free, on-demand rides in electric-powered vehicles to those requesting a ride from any location in the service area.

“Since launching the upgraded service in April with the Tesla Model Y, we’ve seen a steady increase in ridership, reaching 7,000 passengers in May alone,” said Monica Beltran, director of parking and mobility services. “We anticipate even greater usage with the introduction of the Tesla Model X, emphasizing our commitment to a mobility solution that serves everyone.”

Operating seven days a week, rides are based on availability and must be booked through the Freebee app. Those who don’t have a smartphone or need additional accessibility accommodation can contact Freebee dispatch at 855-918-3733.

Providing mobility solutions in Coral Gables Business District is critical for the city since downtown is an important economic agent contributing 27% of the city’s ad valorem tax revenue, Ms. Beltran added. The new fleet of Teslas will also help reduce traffic congestion and enhance the quality of life.

Funding was provided by the city, the Citizens’ Independent Transportation Trust and a grant from the Florida Department of Transportation Smart Transportation Grant.

The Coral Gables Police Department also debuted its first Tesla police vehicle.

Envisioning a greener, more technologically advanced approach to law enforcement, the Telsa police vehicle is more than just a pilot vehicle, said Mayor Vince Lago.

“It’s a bold step towards sustainable policing and a testament to our city’s commitment to embracing the future,” he said. “As mayor, I personally sponsored the legislation to acquire this cutting-edge vehicle, ensuring our police force is equipped with the best tools for the job.”
