Taylor Swift, Dominant Cultural Force Unto Herself, Has Somehow Found Time to Join the WAG Hall of Fame

Some statuses are sealed with a handshake. Taylor Swift cemented her latest role with a high five.

Swift, arguably the most famous person on the planet, made her way to Kansas City’s Arrowhead Stadium once again on Sunday, to watch rumored beau Travis Kelce and the Kansas City Chiefs take on the Los Angeles Chargers. Kelce scored points, and so did Swift, up in the VIP suite, seated next to Brittany Mahomes, wife of Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes. You know, work friends.

The two marked a touchdown in the game’s first quarter by debuting a multi-step celebration handshake, complete with Swift looking like she was mouthing the steps to the clappy-clappy-snappy action and topped off with a vigorous hip bump.

In addition to being an admirable display of extracurricular choreography (Swift’s Eras Tour resumes with its international leg in just a few weeks, when she takes the stage in Buenos Aires beginning November 9), this fifth appearance of Swift at one of Kelce’s games feels like it cements her status as an official WAG. That’s “Wives and Girlfriends,” a role that Swift has somehow found time for while being an singer, actor, performer, production company head, writer, director, maker of delicious chai spice cookies, among many other things. Not that she needs another job, but she’s crushing this one. Swift has also been spotted out having dinner with Brittany Mahomes in recent weeks. 

And not to mention, Swift also wore a beaded friendship bracelet with the number 87—Kelce’s jersey number—bookended by hearts on either side. Perhaps it is a nod to Kelce’s original attempt to give Swift his phone number on a bracelet at her Kansas City Eras Tour stop this past July. 

In fact, Swift showing her support in the stands brings to mind ’90s power couple David Beckham and Victoria Beckham. Victoria, then best known by her stage name Posh Spice as part of the pop group Spice Girls, was already a global superstar in her own right, and went on to achieve even further prominence as a designer. David, of course, was one of the world’s favorite soccer players. Two people on top of their literal and figurative games meet, sparks fly, the world loses their minds? Swap American football for British, fast-forward a few decades, and things are looking pretty darn familiar, even if we never saw Posh execute a high-five quite that intricate.

Swift and Kelce have been spotted out and about over the last several weeks, including surprise cameos on Saturday Night Live, some New York City walkabouts, and more. Though there has not been an official statement about whether they’re dating, science says that five is an awful lot of games to go to if you’re just suddenly into football.
