This article is part of Spring Fashion Month, where we’re breaking down your must-have spring fashion pieces. From denim jackets to comfy sandals, we’re asking editors, influencers and experts about the go-to pieces they wear through spring and beyond.

It’s easy to be an Amazon fashion skeptic. Even though we consider ourselves to be expert shoppers, almost all of us have purchased T-shirts, pants, jackets, dresses, sunglasses and more, and though the item may have had a ton of reviews, once it arrived we were completely disappointed. So that’s why we took it upon ourselves to call in and try on the most popular spring dresses on Amazon under $40. Even though some of our picks have more than 50,000 reviews, we were surprisingly disappointed in quite a few of them, so check out the ones that did actually make the cut below.

At first, I was hesitant to order this dress in its Coffee color based on my skin tone, but I was shocked when I loved it! It wasn’t see-through or too thin, but at the same time this dress was lightweight and comfortable enough that I could move freely while feeling secure. It came just as the pictures online displayed, and I was surprised that even for someone who is 5 feet 2 inches, the height and waist of this dress fit perfectly. The one part about this dress to note was that even though I ordered a small, the bust was a little bigger than I was expecting, and the sleeves were also a bit baggy. However, because this dress is intended to be flowy and less form-fitting, I really didn’t mind! I’ll still be wearing it for events this spring and summer. — Madison Yerke, social strategist

It honestly doesn’t get easier — and more flattering — than this simple V-neck dress, which is available in a lot of basic color and interesting patterns. The style emphasizes all the right places, the material is soft, it’s a great length and you don’t have to worry about wearing any special undergarments. Just a breezy spring dress that could be dressed up with cute sandals or down with sneakers and a denim jacket — what more could you ask for? — Chelsea Stone, senior editor

I’m a little bit of an Amazon fashion skeptic, but I’m pleasantly surprised by how much I’m enjoying this dress. I have no idea why they called this print Black Leopard, because it’s really more of an abstract, almost monarch butterfly vibe. But it’s soft to the touch, and the combo of the length and high neckline make it feel fancier than the average sundress — it could be great dressed up with accessories for a garden wedding or a nice alfresco dinner. I would have liked a zipper to make it a little easier to get into or out of — it’s a lot of fabric to wrangle — and belt loops would have been nice for keeping the included belt attached. But it can go in both the washer and dryer, which is great for the inevitable grass stains I will probably get on it. — Rena Behar, copy editor

This is the perfect T-shirt dress to just throw on and run out of the door. It pairs just as well with sandals as it does with sneakers and is super comfortable. The best part? Pockets — deep ones! While it’s rayon and polyester, it feels like cotton and is breathable. This will definitely be a wardrobe staple. — Lindsey Smith, associate editor

There were so many things I loved about this dress. I loved the adjustable waist wrap and how I could change it to a deep V-neck, a light V-neck or a cover-up. It was super lightweight and breathable and the length and bust fit according to the size chart. There was plenty of room for movement and the colors were everything as described in the photos. With its adjustable fit, it can be dressed up or down and I can totally see it for an event or as a beach coverup once I find myself somewhere with warmer weather. — Madison Yerke, social strategist

This off-the-shoulder dress is so flattering! I was nervous at first because it looked so small out of the bag, but it stretches so much and is really comfortable. The double slits are my favorite part and will be great once the weather gets even hotter. I will say, this dress does wrinkle easily so if you’re packing it for a trip, make sure to have an iron or steamer on hand. — Lindsey Smith, associate editor

This is extremely cottagecore — I feel like I should be pairing it with a giant straw hat and matching picnic basket. It’s fun though! The fabric feels softer than I expected it would, and the florals are much more vivid in-person. The lining also does a good job of making sure the thin fabric isn’t transparent, even if you aren’t wearing a bra (which may be necessary with the way the sleeves and back are designed). The tie back is super cute and easy to tie on your own, though you can also tie it looser and then tug the dress on. Also a big fan of the fact that it’s machine-washable, even if it does need to be line-dried. — Rena Behar, copy editor

The Yathon sleeveless dress has all those little details I look for in a spring dress. It has a flattering V-neck, adjustable spaghetti straps, an A-line and a gently ruched top. I’m always a little worried about sizing when choices are S, M, L and XL, but the large worked because of those easily adjustable straps. It’s not the highest quality cotton, but for the price, it’s soft, comfortable and definitely not see-through. You can also throw on a belt to upgrade your look for work or a more formal gathering. But my favorite part? The pockets. — Tobey Grumet, reviews editor

My expectations for finding a great-fitting dress on Amazon were pretty low, but this one from Dokotoo actually scored very high marks. It’s easy to slip on over your head, but also comes with a discreet side zipper if you need it. The fit was very comfortable overall; not itchy thanks to the full bodice lining, and lightweight and loose enough to still give me full range of motion in my arms. And the banded designed waistline still cinches in tight enough to create some shape and contrast the fullness of the skirt.

While I don’t always love short dresses, I liked that this one had full coverage in the back but still hit right above my knees in the front. I also love the open-back design, though it does mean you’ll have to go braless or opt for a sticky bra. The only caveat of this dress is the neckline. I’m all for a deep V, but this one is perhaps a little too deep and went all the way down to the bottom of my sternum at first. For me, it was nothing a tactically placed safety pin couldn’t fix, but those with larger chests or who like to be more covered-up might want to be wary that the cut is a tad more revealing than most of the Amazon photos let on. — Jillian Tracy, editorial coordinator

Lululemon Align vs. a $23 Amazon lookalike: We put these cult-favorite leggings to the test | CNN Underscored

    [ad_1]

This article is part of our series Battle of the Brands, in which we compare category-leading products to their counterparts to determine which are actually worth your money.

Between the self-care explosion — from yoga and Pilates to meditation — and the pandemic’s resultant work-from-home situation, women are wearing leggings longer and more often than ever before. As such, we’ve become more judicious about which leggings are actually worth investing our money in. Fit, comfort, design and style are musts, as are name brand and cost.

In recent years, Lululemon’s Align Pants have become a cult-favorite item thanks to their “buttery soft” fabric that makes wearing them 24/7 an easy decision, and a fit that skims the body rather than pinches or droops. Need proof? The pants have more than 20,000 reviews and the #Lululemonalign hashtag on Instagram has more than 9,000 posts attached to it, ranging from influencers’ workout videos and try-on sessions to on-the-go street shoots. While reviewers are hard-pressed to find fault in Align, the price would likely be high on the “cons” list — each pair typically runs between $98 and $128.

Equally popular on Amazon are Colorfulkoala’s Buttery Soft High-Waisted Yoga Pants, which have a whopping 46,000 positive reviews — hundreds of which liken the pants to Align — and a much (much) cheaper price tag at $23 per pair.

What’s so great about these leggings, which we named the best workout leggings? They are soft and slinky and literally skim your curves, from waist to ankle. Second, there’s the fabric. Called Nulu, the material is über-soft, sweat-wicking and has a four-way stretch. You can move in these pants — whether you’re doing hot yoga or hopping in and out of your car doing errands.

Our pick for the best budget leggings of the year, the Colorfulkoalas are available in more than 40 colors and are just as soft as Lululemons, but at a fraction of the cost.

Lululemon’s Align and Colorfulkoala’s Buttery Soft are both ultra-popular pants designed for yoga. The chief selling point of both options is the super-soft fabric they’re made of.

Align is comprised of the brand’s proprietary “Nulu” fabric, which is a combination of nylon and lycra that is sweat-wicking, stretchy and, as I’ve mentioned more than a few times, buttery soft. I’ve been an Align devotee for years and can attest that the leggings are great for low-impact exercise like Pilates or yoga — and that they’re so comfortable (and flattering) that I end up wearing them the whole day after my morning workout. Unlike other yoga pants, the Align fabric doesn’t constrict, squeeze or pinch your body, instead it skims over your shape without creating any sort of muffin-top situation.

Lululemon's Align leggings (left) and Colorfulkoala's leggings (right)

Having tested Colorfulkoala’s Buttery Soft pants as well, I can say that the nylon/spandex fabric is the closest I’ve ever seen to the Nulu softness, but it’s not quite as buttery as the Align and they have a sheen to them. I didn’t mind the sheen at all, but the Align leggings definitely have a softer, matte texture. Interestingly enough, the Colorfulkoala pants are brushed on the interior and that texture is nearly exact to Align — so they do feel identical on the inside of the leggings, but on the exterior they are shinier.

Given Align’s matte texture, the fabric can be prone to catching lint or stray hairs, which is more visible on darker colors and patterns. I didn’t experience this with the Colorfulkoala leggings, however, because the fabric’s slight sheen doesn’t attract debris.

Lululemon's Align leggings (left) and Colorfulkoala Buttery Soft leggings (right)

More about that fabric: Align’s Nulu fabric is completely opaque. Maybe it’s attributable to the brand’s “see-through pants scandal” from a decade ago, but you’re never going to see someone’s underwear during a downward-facing dog if they’re wearing Align. And nowadays, Lululemon is also double-lining its lighter hues to triple-confirm the coverage (which results in a thicker, cozier feel to the legging). Undies aside, the fabric density also camouflages the other bits you might want to conceal (read: cellulite, a tummy roll, whatever).

The same cannot be said for Colorfulkoala’s coverage. I tried the leggings in both black and a lighter mauve pink hue and while the black had me covered, the pink was very see-through. I actually wore the pants to Pilates and spent much of the class feeling overexposed. Not just due to my underwear lines being visible, but also those aforementioned bits that I’m not dying to show off — the pant fabric is so thin that, especially in a lighter color, you can see every detail of your tush, legs and beyond. I did appreciate that the waistband is lined, which provides decent tummy control.

Two pairs of Lululemon's Align leggings (left) and the Colorfulkoala leggings (right)

In terms of design, both pants are pretty much identical, with flat, exposed seams cut exactly the same way. I didn’t experience any drooping or sagging with either pair — both stay put all day long. The Align waistband is a bit more generous, coming in at 3/8 inches longer than the Colorfulkoala pants’ and thus providing slightly more tummy coverage. Align leggings also have a hidden waistband pocket for keys, cash or credit card, which is a thoughtful detail.

Both the Lululemon Align and Colorfulkoala High Waisted Yoga Pants are very comfortable to wear all day long. I wasn’t racing to take either pair off after working out, which is a good sign! While their fabrics aren’t identical, both are incredibly soft, and given that their designs are so similar, they fit the same way, contouring your curves rather than pinching or squeezing. Yes, the Colorfulkoala pair are thinner, which affects coverage, but it doesn’t affect comfort at all.

Lululemon’s Align leggings are the sure bet and worth the investment. Yes, you can buy four to five pairs of Colorfulkoala pants for every one pair of Align, but the quality of Align far outweighs the competition. I’m writing this story while wearing a pair of five-year-old Align leggings that still look and fit like they’re brand-new — the ROI is legit.

Ultimately what it came down to for me is that I can’t endorse Colorfulkoala’s inconsistent coverage. While the black pair did provide opaqueness, the fabric is still thinner than Align’s Nulu, and that left me feeling more vulnerable, especially as I was doing squats and lunges on a reformer machine. The Align fabric is bulletproof when it comes to coverage and leaves me feeling more confident when I wear them. As a mom of four in my 40s, that is worth the price of admission.

If budget is a concern, however, Colorfulkoala is a decent legging to buy, but I’d advise sticking to the darker colors and patterns to be safe.

25 of our favorite spring fashion finds under $100 at Nordstrom right now | CNN Underscored

This article is part of Spring Fashion Month, where we’re breaking down your must-have fashion pieces for the next few months. From denim jackets to comfy sandals, we’re asking editors, influencers and experts about the go-to pieces they wear through spring and beyond.

Spring has officially sprung, meaning there’s no better time than now to get a jump start on your wardrobe. As the season gears up, we’ll be trading in our heavy coats, chunky sweaters and boots for flouncy dresses, lightweight blazers and sandals. But revamping your closet doesn’t have to cost a fortune. Luckily, if you’re in the market for spring’s biggest trends at budget-friendly prices, Nordstrom has you covered.

With thousands of incredible items to choose from, finding the season’s must-have items can be time consuming, so we caught up with Kate Bellman, Nordstrom’s managing fashion editor, who gave us some advice on what trends and styles to look for.

According to Bellman, this season’s biggest trends include freshened-up tailoring with silhouettes that “ease towards relaxed shapes” including full-length trousers, soft blazers and statement shirting. Romantic dresses and details including “pretty lace, chiffon and pleats” and “floral prints in pretty palettes” are another top trend. “Crochet, fringe and embroidery in captivating colors” give way to a new “crafty chic” style, too. Lastly, “cutout tops, shirred dresses, strappy sandals, plunging necklines and mini hemlines” are some of spring’s sexiest trends, Bellman says.

With all this in mind, we picked out more of the trendiest $100 and under clothing, shoes, handbags and accessories that we could find from Nordstrom that are sure to take you through the season in major style without breaking the bank.

These Free People overalls are a great piece for transitioning between seasons. While the light wash denim is classic for spring, the full body fit makes it a great layering piece if you’re still dressing to fight off some winter cold fronts.

If your spring days still tend to be on the colder side, denim jackets are a great layering piece for spring. Grab this oversized and slouchy-fit jean jacket in a warm golden or a bright ecru shade

Playful jewelry is an easy way to add personality to any outfit. For some hand drama, try a statement ring, like this neutral-toned swirl one.

What’s better than one bold color this spring? Many! Wear this colorblocked button up open or closed for an instant spring lift to your favorite basic tank and jeans.

After years of flats, slippers and sneakers it’s time to bust out your best party heels, and these certainly do not disappoint.

For a crossover between spring’s romantic and crafty trends, try this crochet lace blouse. It’s complete with balloon sleeves and a high neck silhouette that will look beautiful paired with everything from jeans and trousers to maxi skirts and shorts.

Amp up the flirt factor on your next vacation, date night or weekend adventure with this gorgeous puff sleeve midi dress. Choose from soft lavender or chic black.

Available in some ultra-trendy saturated hues — including lilac, tangerine and Carolina blue — we wouldn’t blame you for getting one in each.

On-trend, works for any occasion and super comfy? You’ll definitely hit the jackpot for spring with these flowy wide leg pants.

With a structured heel and minimal laces, these ankle-tie sandals from Marc Fisher are what spring dreams are made of. Choose from three neutral shades and an eye-catching yellow hue.

An oversized blazer is an absolute must-have this spring. We especially love this style with its relaxed, curved hem and bright spring color options.

This handbag can be used as a crossbody or clutch, but no matter how you wear it, it’s bound to amp up your look.

Add a pop of color and drama to any outfit with these tassel drop earrings, which come in four crisp shades.

Whether you need a new dress for the office or for a picnic in the park, this long shirt dress is a great option. The uplifting blue and white colorway has a flattering waistline twist for an effortless and chic spring look.

If you’re not quite ready for to commit to open toe shoes, these low stacked loafers come in six neutral shades. With a simple gold metal detail, these shoes are casual enough for daily wear but more sophisticated than other go-to slip ons.

Want to be more sleek this spring?  This satin midi skirt has a fluttery asymmetric hem and a thigh-high slit for an easy-breezy but polished look.

Sometimes, keeping it clean and simple is the best option. If your wardrobe is in need of some fresh basics, check out this crewneck tee from Madewell, which looks great with an array of jeans, shorts or skirts.

Slip on these platform clogs and slip out the door. The chunky lug platform gives lift to those who need it, while monochrome colors retain a streamlined look. Snag these clogs in seven shades from sea salt and taupe to bright green and red.

A good pair of sunnies are not only fashionable but functional. These cat-eye sunglasses from Quay Australia come in five cool shades for a modern look with maximum durability.

We tried the $30 Amazon nightgown dress reviewers love — and this is what we thought | CNN Underscored

    [ad_1]

Amazon always has our attention when it comes to snagging good deals. For the chillier months, we — and over 25,000 reviewers — loved this Amazon coat. But for spring, you’re looking for that easy-breezy dress that’s comfy enough to wear nonstop as a casual house dress but so stylish that you’ll want everyone to see it. And Amazon has a solution for that too: Everyone, meet the Amazon nightgown dress.

Part “Little House on the Prairie,” part millennial partying all summer long in Montauk, the nightgown dress gives off major bohemian vibes and is reminiscent of Poupette St. Barth’s and Spell & the Gypsy Collective-style dresses … but at a fraction of the price.

OK, OK, it’s not really a nightgown, but thanks to its breezy, flowy cut, the powers that be (aka influencers) are calling it just that. You know something is trending when it has its own hashtag, and this dress got one early on: #AmazonNightgown.

Are you ready to hear how much this majorly in-demand dress costs? Just 30 bucks! Which is part of the reason why it’s blowing up on the ’gram and beyond. We can’t not afford to give it a try. And it’s on Prime with free returns, making it a no-brainer.

Another thought on why it’s gaining steam: the aforementioned loosey-goosey cut. In the age of skintight jeans and crop tops, sometimes a girl just wants to put on a muumuu — albeit one in a pretty pattern with chic details — to run some errands. Think about all those super-flowy nap dresses that everyone seems to have. No back fat bulge showing, no pants pinching — just soft, pretty cotton creating an airy silhouette. What doesn’t sound great about that? Check out how @ChrissyMWard styled it below. Pairing it with a sleek ponytail and woven bag, the fashion blogger told her 26,000 followers, “Best $28 I’ve ever spent.”

So, I put the Amazon nightgown dress to the test. Because certainly this was an Instagram versus Reality scenario, right? Available in a whopping 15 colorways, I chose the pink pattern in a size small — lots of reviewers said to size up because the chest ran tight, but given the voluminous skirt, I played it safe and stuck with my normal size, which I was glad about because it fits perfectly.

underscored R.Vivimos Women's Long-Sleeve Floral Print Retro V-Neck Tassel Bohemian Midi Dress

Our takeaway: The vividly colored material is actually a rayon/cotton blend (not solely cotton), which makes it super lightweight and almost silky against the skin. My fear that the fabric would overwhelm my 5-foot-4 stature was put at bay as soon as I put it on. While it’s certainly loose, the dress is definitely not huge. The midi length is my favorite detail, as it hits a flattering point between my knees and ankles, but the trickiest thing is going to be finding a bra or undergarment that can work with the plunging neckline!

If you fear that the dress’ shapeless cut will be more potato sack and less sexy fairy princess, I get it. But its cut is much narrower in real life than it appears online, and with the help of accessories (layered necklaces, bracelets, sunglasses and pretty sandals!), the dress — that others are paying more than $300 for from high-end designers — easily transitions from drab to fab, letting you live out your cottagecore fashion fantasies. Or you can pair it with flip-flops and a ponytail and head to your farmers market looking effortlessly chic.

That’s right, the Amazon nightgown dress is the perfect early fall transition dress that you don’t want to miss out on, nor should you because — reminder — it’s only $31!

The 15 best fleece-lined leggings to keep you warm this winter, according to experts | CNN Underscored

    [ad_1]

There are few pieces in a winter wardrobe that are as hard-working as a base layer — and anyone who’s made the mistake of throwing their winter coat over their regular office-appropriate outfit on a windy winter day knows that to be true. If you’re in a cold climate that’s prone to snow, hail or even a Nor’easter or two, a good pair of fleece-lined leggings might just change your life.

“I look for a pair that’s super-comfortable, high-waisted, with a longer length,” says model and fashion blogger Kristina Zias, who relocated from the East Coast to Los Angeles. “I want something that I can lounge on the couch in all day but then be able to throw on an oversized sweater and boots and wear them out.”

There’s a misconception that fleece-lined leggings add heft to your body, but the best fleece-lined leggings provide warmth without any added bulk. In fact, they look exactly like regular activewear, but are thinly lined with soft, warm fleece for a bit of extra insulation. That means you can wear them under skirts or dresses for the office, or as a base layer underneath ski pants for a day on the mountain. Just look for words like ”fleece-lined” or “brushed interior” in the description, which means they’re specially designed to trap and lock heat.

Whether you’re hitting the slopes or heading to work, these thermal winter leggings, recommended by fashion experts and industry insiders, will keep you reliably warm.

Reviewers say these fleece-lined leggings are the perfect finishing touch to any winter look. “They’re so soft and perfect to pair with shackets and active tops,” says one.

One reviewer calls these “the best winter leggings,” while another says she “was worried about them looking thick with the liner but they do not.”

Great for people who want to keep running outside in the winter, these fleece tights are water-repellant as well.

The buttery-soft fleece fabric combines with four-way stretch to keep you comfortable and warm.

Crafted from lightweight, double-knit fleece, these leggings are perfect for when temperatures drop.

These fleece-lined leggings come in four neutral colors.

This uber-comfortable pair is made with super-soft, micro-modal fleece fabric and is perfect for a day of skiing. Even better: They run from size 0 to size 20.

With more than 200 5-star reviews, these fleece-lined leggings are perfect for chilly winter days ahead.

A stirrup iteration of the brand’s go-to Liquid Leggings, this fleece-lined pair is made for style and warmth.

One reviewer calls these her “favorite winter leggings” because they’re “good for around the house or errands, and the faux fur lining gives them a good thickness.”

Reviewers say these are the perfect leggings for winter because they’re “so warm and soft but [they don’t] make you look bulky.”

Made from a premium stretch fleece, these leggings are perfect for pairing with an oversized sweatshirt or a mini skirt. Plus, the pair only has 5-star reviews!

With more than 7,000 5-star reviews, these leggings are a fan favorite. One reviewer says they’re “Great quality, buttery soft, great fit, and so [affordable.]”

    CNN
     —

Whether you live on the East Coast or the West Coast, in Florida or Minnesota, when fall rolls around, you’re ready to pack away the thin tank tops and the gauzy dresses and slip into something warmer. Cozier. Bigger.

After scrolling endlessly through Instagram, we’ve noticed fashion influencers and bloggers have collectively latched onto a sweater that satisfies all these requirements. From Free People, the oversized pullover is dubbed the Ottoman Slouchy Tunic, and it comes in a rainbow of hues, from a soft cream to a punchy bubblegum pink, that will easily transition with you as the temperatures drop.

First unveiled in 2015, the Ottoman has been rereleased each year in a slew of new colors that devotees then clamor to buy before they sell out. What’s actually so great about the sweater? Chief among its high points is its versatility. “The Ottoman Slouchy Tunic is a classic Free People piece that works with any style,” Free People senior managing director of creative Ana Hartl tells CNN Underscored. “The tunic can be paired in multiple ways, allowing for the customer to style it however she sees fit.”

    underscored-ottomantunic-white2

Among devotees, the Ottoman’s mock neck is one of several design details worth raving about. Roomy and flattering, the cut provides more coverage than a crewneck but in a way that isn’t as constraining as a standard turtleneck. Next up: It’s stretchy! Made of cotton, nylon and spandex, the tunic isn’t a limp noodle; instead, it hugs in the right places, despite its slouchy, oversized shape. Lastly, the heavy-knit ribbing lends texture, which goes a long way to camouflage any bulges you’re looking to keep under wraps, and it’s a great defense mechanism against spills and stains too.

Instagram influencers have hopped on the bandwagon too, with the likes of fashion blogger (and former Ralph Lauren buyer) Kate Brennan of The Chic Series recommending the cozy sweater to her 71,000 Instagram followers. “It’s suitable for any activity of my life,” she tells CNN Underscored, adding that she owns the tunic in six colors. “I wear it with leggings over my tank when I head to Pilates, I wear it with skinny jeans and sneakers on the sidelines of the soccer field, and if I want to dress it up I will pair it with Spanx faux leather leggings and over-the-knee boots. Also, I have sensitive skin and I’m allergic to wool, and this is one of the few winter sweaters that I have found that is cozy, comfortable and not itchy.”

Along with Brennan, fashionistas including former bachelorette and HGTV “Love It or List It Vancouver” star Jillian Harris, Texas-based blogger Bridget Barbier-Mueller and countless others have rocked the ottoman slouchy. If you want to get in on the trend, shop it at Free People for the most color options, or check it out at Nordstrom, Macy’s or Zappos. Oh, and be sure to size down, as the tunic runs big!

This article is part of Spring Fashion Month, where we’re breaking down your must-have fashion pieces for the next few months. From denim jackets to comfy sandals, we’re asking editors, influencers and experts about the go-to pieces they wear through spring and beyond.

Easy, breezy and totally comfortable. The Nap Dress, trademarked by lifestyle brand Hill House, is just one of the latest iterations of house dresses. And while house dresses have been around for decades and potentially even centuries (the style is said to have originated from a Victorian gown), the romantic garment is experiencing quite the renaissance.

Nap dresses are “loose-fitting, flowy and feminine” says Amanda Sanders, a lifestyle expert and stylist to celebs like Gwyneth Paltrow, Chris Rock and Jennifer Coolidge. Often the only fitted part of the dress is around the bust, and other key features include “heavy smocking, over-exaggerated puff sleeves and a typically long, slightly pleated skirt.” While nap dresses may be comfortable enough to sleep in, their purpose goes far beyond that of a nightgown. The brilliance of the nap dress and similar house dresses is that they’re generally dressy enough to wear to the office, comfortable enough for running errands and romantic enough for a weekend date.

Ahead, we’ve not only tried but napped in our favorite nap dresses we own and love. They check all our boxes when it comes to comfort, versatility and — of course — style.

When I think of nap dresses, my mind immediately goes to Hill House, the brand that undoubtedly started the viral trend. Everyone wants to get their hands on the Ellie Nap Dress and I was lucky enough to try it for a size-inclusive test I’m a part of for our social channels (coming soon!). As expected, the fabric is absolutely top-notch and the French-inspired ‘Pink Stripe Vine’ pattern is both dainty and feminine. It truly is comfy enough to nap in but the ruffled shoulders, elasticated smocking and tiered midi skirt is elevated and sophisticated enough to wear to fancy drinks or dinner this spring and summer. It’s also important to note that after hours of sleeping or general movement in the dress, it never once wrinkled! One word: obsessed. — Stephanie Griffin, social lead

I love how flattering the Daphne is and the fact that it has pockets that are deep enough to hold my phone, which is always a plus in my books. While this dress does feature a structured bodice that makes it more restrictive up top than the Ellie, it is still just as comfortable to wear (and yes, to nap in)! Basically, I love everything about this dress from the cute, whimsical print to the elegant, ruffled shoulders to the flowy bottom. — Rachel Dennis, editorial coordinator

This dress lives up to the name! The fabric feels cooling and soft like my sheets so I didn’t really notice it while sleeping. It feels like the perfect dress to wear while laying in the park or on the beach. Definitely recommend! — Hannah Lauson, senior digital content strategist

Behold, a puff-sleeve dress that doesn’t overwhelm you! I’m just 5-feet-tall, and puff sleeves can often make me look like I’m about to fly away. These on the Louisa Nap dress fit my proportions exactly, and it really is so comfy. I got it in the Black Cotton and while it feels stiff at first, it just gets softer and softer with each wash. It’s so stretchy that I’d definitely recommend ordering your regular size or actually one size down, especially if you have narrow soldiers since the neckline is so wide. Speaking of neckline, it hits perfectly so I can actually wear a bra with it, and it can easily be dressed up with heels and jewelry or truly be the perfect nap dress. — Rachel Lubitz, senior lifestyle editor

It’s a classic for a reason. The Ellie Nap Dress from Hill House Home is so light and floaty, that’s really not hard to actually nap in it. This gingham print reminds me of picnics in the parks and is perfect for summer, and the ruffled sleeve is a fun touch that makes this dress both cute and comfy. — Chelsea Stone, senior editor

The vividly colored material is actually a rayon/cotton blend (not solely cotton), which makes it super lightweight and almost silky against the skin. My fear that the fabric would overwhelm my 5-foot-4 stature was put at bay as soon as I put it on. While it’s certainly loose, the dress is definitely not huge. The midi length is my favorite detail, as it hits a flattering point between my knees and ankles. The dress — that others are paying more than $300 for from high-end designers — easily transitions from drab to fab, letting you live out your cottagecore fashion fantasies. — Courtney Thompson, Underscored contributor

I’m calling it right now: This is going to be the dress I wear (or sleep in!) the most this year. Not only does it have the key features of a nap dress — a heavily smocked bodice, over-exaggerated puff sleeves and a long, loose-fitting skirt — but it’s quite literally the cutest, comfiest and most-flattering dress I’ve ever worn. The 3D embroidered flowers are a unique, spring-y touch and the sleeves aren’t too billowy, which I love. Since I’m on the shorter side, I often get swallowed in maxis, but the fit is just perfection and fits every body to a tee. It needs no explanation that the other seven colors are sitting in my Free People cart right now! — Stephanie Griffin, social lead

If you’re looking for an incredibly chic nap dress that has the type of material that’ll last you til the end of time, don’t sleep on Daily Sleeper (pun very much intended). The material is so thick and durable, yet lightweight and breathable enough to wear during the warmer weather months — and to every kind of occasion might I add. The elasticated smocking and skirt accentuate the body in all of the ways a woman wants it to, and it’s so comfy, I truly never want to take it off. My favorite feature though, are the sleeves, which are overly-exaggerated to perfection and can be worn on or off the shoulders. Take it from me: it’s worth every single penny. — Stephanie Griffin, social lead

OK, yes, this dress looks dark and heavy but listen — this is truly the easiest, breeziest dress I own. I first wore this to an absolutely sweltering wedding last summer and since then it’s been in my work-from-home wardrobe because it feels like wearing the lightest cotton imaginable. The two slits on either add some sex appeal and also make it cool to walk in, and it’s got a ton of elastic so it really hugs your curves in a beautiful way. I’ve worn it with a (faux) diamond necklace as much as I’ve worn it barefoot around the house. And yup, you can wear a regular bra! — Rachel Lubitz, senior lifestyle editor

Any time I slip this dress on, I never want to take it off which is ideal, because it can also double as a nightgown! Cut from super soft, lightweight materials, this happy orange and pink dress is perfectly oversized and features a shirred bust and elasticated cuffs that can be worn up or down. The keyhole back is the perfect feminine touch and overall, it’s incredibly versatile and can be worn on all occasions. — Stephanie Griffin, social lead

If you’re looking for a shorter and less expensive version of the ultra-comfy nap dress, snag The Athena.

Ready to work some more cottagecore vibes into your summer wardrobe? With a dainty floral print, this maxi dress from Lulus is perfect for all your get-togethers, daily errands or sun-soaked relaxing.

With a sweet tie back, square neckline and ruffled hem, this maxi from Free People has us completely obsessed. Perfect for those days when you want to feel a tad more feminine but also want that breezy, all-day comfort.

Sanders suggests larger patterns, as opposed to small floral prints, when it comes to looking more in fashion and less like you’re wearing a nightgown you’d actually sleep in. This embroidered dress is one take on that bolder pattern, which reviewers say garners tons of compliments.

This option from Lulus, one of our favorite places to shop for affordable yet high-quality dresses, features the nap dress’s signature smocked bodice and flowy skirt, but swaps big sleeves for short off-the-shoulder ones. With thigh-high slits, the whole dress is sleek, and just a little sexier than your typical nap dress.

Sanders explains that many maxi-length nap dresses can be “overwhelming to most women who are under 5’7”.” Short nap dresses feature everything we love about their maxi-length counterparts, but are friendlier to petites. This option from Free People comes in seven stunning colors, and features a cute tie in the back so you don’t have to fret about buttons or zippers.
