It’s *** sad ending for the greatest of all time as Usain Bolt pulls up with an injury in the final race of his career in the World Championships in London, the Jamaican sprinter could not finish Saturday’s 4 by 100 m relay as he went down and sought medical attention. Bolt did eventually cross the finish line. With his teammates, Jamaica’s team doctor issued *** statement saying it was *** hamstring cramp, but Bolt is in *** lot of pain from the disappointment of losing the race. Despite the bitter ending, it has been *** sweet career for Bolt, who finishes with 14 world championship medals, 11 gold, and 8 Olympic golds.

Usain Bolt ‘not worried’ about records being broken by today’s cast of sprinters

In the 16 years since Usain Bolt posted his world records in the 100 and 200 meters, nobody has really come close to toppling them. One of track’s all-time greats and maybe still its most-recognizable star said he looks at today’s top sprinters and doesn’t expect that to change anytime soon.Video above: Usain Bolt Injured in Final Career Race”I’m not worried,” Bolt said at a Puma event on Thursday, two days before the start of world championships that will be the first he has attended in person since he retired from competition eight years ago.Bolt set both records — 9.58 in the 100 and 19.19 in the 200 — at worlds in Berlin in 2009. Since then, only one other runner, Yohan Blake, has cracked 9.7 in the 100, and only Blake has run faster than 19.3 in the 200. American Noah Lyles is the only sprinter to be outspoken about putting Bolt’s marks in his sights. Lyles caused a stir in 2023 when he said he was thinking about times of 9.65 and 19.10, saying, “I have a good reason to believe I’m going to do something I’ve never done before.”Lyles pulled off a Bolt-like feat by winning both sprints at worlds that year, but he has yet to surpass the 19.31 he ran at the 2022 worlds to break Michael Johnson’s long-held American record. This year’s fastest 100 meters was posted by another Jamaican, Kishane Thompson, whose 9.75 makes him a favorite heading into Sunday’s final, expected to include Lyles, American Kenny Bednarek and another Jamaican, Oblique Seville. Bolt predicted a 1-2 Jamaican finish, with Thompson and Seville at the top of the podium. “It’s all about if they can execute — not listen to the noise and go execute,” Bolt said. With his upright stride and 6-foot frame, Australia’s 17-year-old Gout Gout has drawn comparisons to Bolt, in part because Gout is slightly ahead of where Bolt was, time-wise, when he was 17. Could Gout be the man to break one of Bolt’s records?”It’s always easy when you’re younger,” Bolt said. “The transition to seniors from juniors is always tougher. It’s all about getting the right coach, getting the right people around you.”Bolt said improvements in track surfaces and shoes — Puma, for instance, released results of a study that concluded he would’ve run 9.42 in Berlin wearing today’s shoes — make it inevitable his records will fall someday. Just not now.”Everything evolves in life, people trying to get better, trying to get faster,” he said. “It’s not going to be a surprise if it actually happens.”

X-Rays Reveal Gnarled Remains of Ancient Roman Military Sandal

At first blush, the remains of an ancient Roman sandal look more like little gnarled carcasses than footwear. But upon closer inspection and using X-rays, archeologists say the shoe parts they found at an ancient military site are unusually well preserved.

Discovered at a roughly 2,000-year-old fort near Oberstimm, a village in Bavaria, Germany, the shoe leftovers include a sole and iron nails, which would have offered traction over “rough terrain,” per a translated statement from the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation (BLfD). Typically, only the nails from such footwear remain, but this was a rare case in which the soles also endured. Archeologists found the remains in a well at the ancient fort; before the x-rays, they thought the twisted mass contained what was left of an old sickle, per a statement from the BLfD.

“So-called caligae [shoes] were worn mainly by Roman soldiers during the Roman Empire,” said Amira Adaileh, a consultant at the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation. However, the discovery “shows that the practices, lifestyles and clothing that the Romans brought with them to Bavaria were adopted by the local people.” Other findings at the site included Roman ceramics, food waste, and tools.

While the remains look nothing like the “gladiator sandals” of today, they’re strikingly familiar — and maybe even stylish — in a recreation published by BLfD; it depicts how they might’ve originally looked, back when the Roman fort is thought to have been occupied, between A.D. 60 and 130.

  • Gorgeous Pokémon, Anime Sneakers Are Too Good For Nike

Gorgeous Pokémon, Anime Sneakers Are Too Good For Nike

While Nike likes to dabble in the out-and-out nerd market sometimes, from Doraemon to Hello Kitty, for the most part the company likes to keep its collabs subtle, and has not worked with Nintendo for a long time. Meaning it will likely never officially release shoes this nice.

The sneakers you’re seeing in this gallery are all the work of artist Andrew Chiou, who has been doing the rounds on shoe blogs this week for his recent Pokémon work, but that stuff is just scratching the surface. Using Dunks and Jordans as his canvas, Chiou has painted (or at least designed) a ton of custom sneakers lately based on everything from Dragon Ball to Sailor Moon, sometimes for customers, and sometimes as one-offs for celebrities and athletes.

These are a pair of “What The” Super Mario concepts (“What The” sneakers are Nike’s special lines where designs get wild):

Here are some Pokémon ones he released earlier this week, featuring Scyther, Bulbasaur, Shiny Gyarados and Dragonite:

This is a pair of Sailor Moon concepts, again on a pair of Dunks, which with their retro styling and clean panel design makes them ideal to sketch out themes like this:

This pair of Dragon Ball Dunks, based on Vegeta, aren’t a mock-up, these have actually been painted up on a real pair:

I am in love with the colourway on these Snorlax Jordan IVs:

And finally, just to break up the monotony of Dunks and Jordan IVs, here’s a Venusaur mocked up over a pair of very lovely CDG x Nike ACG Mowabbs (scroll through to see the all-cream colourway of the original shoes, an all-timer for the silhouette):

If you want to see more of Chiou’s stuff, you can find more shoe designs—both mockups and actual custom sneaker paintjobs—at his Instagram page.

Adidas Is Turning Homer’s ‘Walking Into The Bushes’ Meme Into A Sneaker

Image for article titled Adidas Is Turning Homer's 'Walking Into The Bushes' Meme Into A Sneaker

It hasn’t been a great month for Adidas, but if the German sportswear giant can be counted on one thing these days (or over the last 20 years), it’s finding ways to squeeze some cash out of licensed sneaker deals. Next up: The Simpsons.

Earlier this month we got our first look at a Simpsons x Superstar collab, which sees nearly the entire surface of the shoe coated in blue fuzz to approximate Marge’s hair. It looks exactly like a pair of old Cookie Monster sneakers I once bought for my (then) two-year-old:

Image for article titled Adidas Is Turning Homer's 'Walking Into The Bushes' Meme Into A Sneaker

    Image: Adidas

Another shoe in the lineup, one leaked earlier today and this time a Stan Smith, features Homer instead. While initially seeming a lot less involved than the Marge shoe—maybe there’s a balding joke here, I don’t know—flipping the shoe around reveals this one has some fuzz too, but only on the heel:

Like the meme itself, this is something you can chuckle at when you see it on the internet, but spending money to wear it on your feet? Hrmmmmmm.

Not that Adidas will care. While the company’s Yeezy collaboration has turned to ash, and had been worth big money at its peak, Adidas’ bread and butter in the sneaker business (like Nike’s), isn’t in high profile, limited releases but in two other places: for the most part, it’s the everyday roster of venerable classics (the Superstar, the Stan Smith, slides, etc) and to a lesser extent it’s tie-ins like this.

We’ve seen this a lot over the last few years, as the company has released sneakers based on everything from Game of Thrones to Pokémon to South Park to a previous Simpsons release, and while many of these come have come across looking a bit naff, some (Pokémon especially) have been great!

There’s no word on a release date or price for either of these.

  • Adidas ends Ye deal over hate speech, costing rapper his billionaire status

Adidas ends Ye deal over hate speech, costing rapper his billionaire status

    • Adidas ends partnership immediately
    • To take about $250 mln hit to 2022 net income
    • Gap, Balenciaga have also cut ties with Ye

Oct 25 (Reuters) – Adidas AG (ADSGn.DE) terminated its partnership with rapper and fashion designer Ye on Tuesday after he made a series of antisemitic remarks, a move that knocked the musician off the Forbes list of the world’s billionaires.

Adidas put the tie-up, which has produced several hot-selling Yeezy branded sneakers, under review this month.

“Adidas does not tolerate antisemitism and any other sort of hate speech,” the German company said on Tuesday.

“Ye’s recent comments and actions have been unacceptable, hateful and dangerous, and they violate the company’s values of diversity and inclusion, mutual respect and fairness,” it said.

Forbes magazine said the end of the deal meant Ye’s net worth shrank to $400 million. The magazine had valued his share of the Adidas partnership at $1.5 billion.

The remainder of Ye’s wealth comes from real estate, cash, his music catalogue and a 5% stake in ex-wife Kim Kardashian’s shapewear firm, Skims, Forbes said.

Representatives for Ye, formerly known as Kanye West, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

For Adidas, ending the partnership and the production of Yeezy branded products, as well as stopping all payments to Ye and his companies, will have a “short-term negative impact” of up to 250 million euros ($248.90 million) on net income this year, the company said.

Ye has courted controversy in recent months by publicly ending major corporate tie-ups and making outbursts on social media against other celebrities. His Twitter and Instagram accounts were restricted, with the social media platforms removing some of his online posts that users condemned as antisemitic.

In now-deleted Instagram posts earlier this year, the multiple Grammy award-winning artist accused Adidas and U.S. apparel retailer Gap Inc (GPS.N) of failing to build contractually promised permanent stores for products from his Yeezy fashion line.

He also accused Adidas of stealing his designs for its own products.

On Tuesday, Gap, which had ended its partnership with Ye in September, said it was taking immediate steps to remove Yeezy Gap products from its stores and that it had shut down YeezyGap.com.

“Antisemitism, racism and hate in any form are inexcusable and not tolerated in accordance with our values,” Gap said in a statement.

European fashion house Balenciaga has also cut ties with Ye, according to media reports.

“The saga of Ye … underlines the importance of vetting celebrities thoroughly and avoiding those who are overly controversial or unstable,” said Neil Saunders, managing director of GlobalData.

Adidas poached Ye from rival Nike Inc (NKE.N) in 2013 and agreed to a new long-term partnership in 2016 in what the company then called “the most significant partnership created between a non-athlete and a sports brand.”

The tie-up helped the German brand close the gap with Nike in the U.S. market.

Yeezy sneakers, which cost between $200 and $700, generate about 1.5 billion euros ($1.47 billion) in annual sales for Adidas, making up a little over 7% of its total revenue, according to estimates from Telsey Advisory Group.

Shares in Adidas, which cut its full-year forecast last week, closed down 3.2%. The group said it would provide more information as part of its upcoming Q3 earnings announcement on Nov. 9.
