  • Miami-area councilman launches expletive-laced rant against ICE from dais

An El Portal meeting quickly devolved after a councilman launched an expletive-filled attack on ICE and U.S Customs and Border Protection, using a racial epithet in his rant.

The incident began when Councilman Anders Urbom, speaking during the Village’s Jan. 22 Planning and Zoning committee meeting, described witnessing a traffic stop on Biscayne Boulevard by Border Protection agents.

Urbom told the committee members, who are the village council members, and attendees he had been traveling north on Biscayne Boulevard in Miami when he saw a Border Protection agent in a parking lot conducting a traffic stop.

“It just seemed odd that a CBP officer was doing a traffic stop,” Urbom said, adding that he pulled into a nearby KFC parking lot and began filming.

Urbom described the encounter as civil, saying the agent did not handcuff the person being detained and allowed the person to keep his cellphone. Urbom said the federal agent ultimately left with one of two men, while the other remained with the vehicle.

After the agent departed, Urbom said he approached the man who stayed behind and asked why they were stopped. Urbom claimed the agent used something minor as an excuse, pointing to the multiple registration stickers many Miami-Dade drivers place on their license plates.

Urbom’s remarks, captured on the village’s meeting video, then spiraled.

He said “every white person in this country who voted for Trump” is racist, using the N word in his rant. He then mimed holding a gun, and later raised his arms as though holding a long gun, the video shows. He unleashed profanities at ICE and CBP, including “motherf——” and “f— ICE.”

Urbom is the newest member of the Village Council, elected in 2019. Mayor Omarr C. Nickerson put the brakes on the outburst to which Urbom responded, “It’s over, it’s over,” the recording shows.

Vice Mayor Darian Martin, who is Black, condemned Urbom’s use of the racial epithet.

“I do think it is horribly offensive for that word to be mentioned in any context,” Martin said. “I do say that as a white man you [Urbom] should not be saying the N word in any context and I take great offense to it and I think that you owe us an apology,” he added, drawing applause.

Urbom replied that he would apologize, but said he meant no offense to anyone other than “the white Christians who voted for Trump,” according to the video. Urbom’s remarks came during the “Good and Welfare” portion toward the end of the meeting, an agenda slot typically reserved for informal, non-voting comments and general community updates.

Urbom did not reply to an email asking about the incident. His online bio on the Village’s website says “his main priorities are public safety, public works (including tree trimming, swales, and septic-to-sewer), and traffic plus pedestrian/cyclist safety.”

The next El Portal City Council meeting is 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 27, at Village Hall, 500 NE 87th St. Residents who want to weigh in can do so during public comment.

Erica Mena Previously Came Under Fire For A Comment She Made Toward Spice

As The Shade Room previously reported, Mena came under heavy backlash in August 2023. At the time, a ‘Love & Hip Hop Atlanta’ episode was aired, which showed Mena referring to her castmate, Spice, as a “blue monkey” during a heated exchange.

In the weeks that followed, Spice spoke out about the altercation and let fans know that she wasn’t letting Mena’s “opinion” of her devalue her.

“…Someone’s opinion of me does not value who I am and not because someone thinks something of me, that doesn’t mean that’s who I am,” Spice explained during an interview with Forbes.

During the conversation, Spice also addressed Mena’s apparent diss of dark-skinned women.

“I’ve always reminded my melanated women how beautiful they are, to love themselves [for] who they are [so] someone can’t come and say a few words,” she said. “…That doesn’t define me. I know who I am.”

In September of that year, Mena publicly apologized for her comment about Spice, per The Shade Room. Additionally, she alleged that her words were not “racially driven.”

“I deeply regret my insensitive comment and want to humbly apologize to anybody I hurt or offended by my thoughtlessness,” she told TMZ at the time. “My choice of words was wrong, and I take full responsibility for what I said. I am committed to listening to the voices of those affected and will work toward making amends. As a woman of color and the mother of two black children, I want to make it clear that my use of that word was not in any way racially driven.”

  • BEST OF 2022: Supermom In Training: Put down your phone and watch your kids’ sports!

BEST OF 2022: Supermom In Training: Put down your phone and watch your kids’ sports!

I ranted about this during a recent episode of Suburban Parents Talk. My bean has done a lot of different sports and extracurriculars, and I’m proud to say that I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve missed being there. I’ve gone to swimming lessons, hockey practices and games (even the super early ones that are crazily far away), tee ball, soccer, cooking classes, and more. And then, when everything suddenly stopped, I found that my son not only missed his sports but I did too.

When we came back I was invested more than ever. And I have been since. My phone usually only comes out to take photos or videos. I really make a point of not scrolling around on Facebook or getting into texting convos because all of that can wait one measly hour.

But I see the parents who just can’t seem to put their phones down. I’ve seen parents regrettably miss goals. I’ve seen kids look expectantly out into the sea of parents to get a small wave or wink from a parent only to find them absorbed in something on their screens.

If Covid has taught us anything, it’s that life is completely and totally unpredictable. So many lost so much in those two years, and parents did too – we lost time to watch our kids grow and have fun and enjoy sports and extra-curriculars. And that’s why now, more than ever, we need to put down our phones.

    It’s for one hour.

    Put it down.

And who knows: Maybe you could put it down during meal time too. But that’s a whole other rant *wink*.

  • Supermom In Training: I’ve reached a new level of exhaustion

Supermom In Training: I’ve reached a new level of exhaustion

I’m tired. But not yawn-and-stretch tired. Like numb.

I dunno why. Maybe it’s the change of seasons. Although we’ve had incredibly warm fall weather, I’m feeling blah.

We’ve had a lot of visitors lately, and hockey season keeps us going 3-4 times a week at arenas all around our area. It was Halloween and I (as always) overdo it with the themed food, decorations, etc. I really want to get ahead on my Christmas shopping because I like December to be a month where I can instead focus on all the fun get-togethers and activities rather than frantically shopping. I’m working out my son starting sacrament classes with church. I’m helping take care of my 91-year-old grandfather. I volunteer at my son’s school one morning a week and have been helping with book repairs at home. I’ve got an energetic pup who needs his exercise and attention. My husband works different shifts at all hours of the day and night, so I’m the one keeping everything organized and going at home. There’s a lot of meal prep and lunch-making. Oh, and I have this thing where I work full-time too.

And I feel burnt. I’m sick of grocery shopping and making the same boring meals for lunch and dinner, but I don’t have the “oomph” to come up with anything “different” at the moment. I have passion projects like book writing and podcasting on the back burner because I don’t have the creative juice for them by the end of the day. I’ll realize I haven’t chatted with a close friend in weeks because the days are rushing by in monotony.

I know I’m not the only one. In fact, I’d venture a guess that almost every parent reading this could also write a paragraph-long rant about all the balls they’re juggling simultaneously like me. But it feels good to let it out. Cathartic.

How are you doing? Need to rant for a minute? Rant away in the comments… I’m listening.
