    After likely spending years in college and excitedly anticipating a professional life, it’s easy to be sympathetic to an entrepreneur’s hesitancy about returning to the classroom. But being excellence-and stability-driven, like it or not, also means nurturing knowledge and skills as leaders, as well as those of staff members. Put simply, at some point, to keep careers, businesses and overall satisfaction growing, it’s occasionally necessary to plunge back into the scholastic pool.

    Why further education could be the right choice for you

    Significant payoffs of ongoing learning include value creation, career satisfaction and engagement, as well as closing collegiate skill gaps and reducing churn.

    Let’s look at the value side first: The more you know and can do, the greater your value to all parties — investors, partners and staff. Diverse and up-to-date knowledge increases the ability to identify opportunities and problem-solve.

    Keeping your knowledge and skills current also puts you in the best position to explore new business opportunities and lead authoritatively. In doing so, you’re positioning both yourself and (ideally) your team as experts as a way to stay market competitive. If you’re starting a company or buying an asset, that extra education symbolizes commitment and capability that can give you an edge in attracting partners and winning over investors.

    Sometimes, college doesn’t prepare new graduates for everything needed to be capable and successful in entrepreneurial or other professional pursuits. Many industries, such as tech, finance, commercial real estate and other dynamic fields are evolving so quickly that a gap exists between expertise needed in the real world and that provided via college curriculums. So, you and/or your team may well need specialized vocational training provided by industry organizations and experts to build and maintain a competitive advantage. And for enterprises that require licensing, it’s often obligatory to do so.

    This brings to mind another essential reason to stay current: avoiding liability. If you operate a business in an industry that carries a fair amount of malpractice risk, such as law, architecture or real estate, showing that you took best-practice measures to keep team abilities at their peak will help protect against professional negligence claims.

    Data abundantly points to the value of continuing education, particularly as it applies to providing ongoing learning to employees. According to LinkedIn’s 2018 Workplace Learning Report, 94% of employees reported being more loyal to employers that invest in their education, and no less than 63% of working adults described themselves as being “professional learners” (taken career courses or other training in the last twelve months according to a 2016 Pew Research Center article. That latter research also indicates that 69% of workers living in households earning more than $75,000 per year are likewise self-described professional learners.

    Growth and satisfaction

    Both business and personal lives can become tedious when a person is stuck doing the same task repeatedly, particularly without variation or the opportunity to expand. This is what tends to happen when knowledge and experience in new areas haven’t been developed for an extended period.

    When we’re trying to build a reliable team, boredom is among the primary opponents. Intellectually stymied employees are likely to become disengaged and have diminishing views of their futures, making them much more likely to look for a new job.

    Further education challenges entrepreneurs and employees personally and professionally and opens opportunities for growth and creativity. The chance to try something new, get a better or novel result or simply offer a different perspective keeps work fresh and boosts engagement and fulfillment. The potential opened by ongoing learning allows us to redefine entrepreneurial and professional identities and find what truly fits our personalities and talents.

    Educational avenues

    Fortunately, depending on preferences, objectives, budget, industry and available time, there are plenty of options for pursuing additional education. If you’re considering diversifying into a new sector, the conventional route is going back to college (or hiring managers and technicians with the needed skill sets). While this can be costly and time-consuming, it’s also valuable and rewarding. Even if you already have a particular level of degree (bachelor’s, master’s, etc.), there’s no limit to how many degrees you can get on the same level. In other words, just because you already have a bachelor’s doesn’t mean that the mandatory next step is a master’s, particularly if the goal is to change industries.

    As an alternative route, higher education institutions offer certificate programs that can be completed in three to 18 months. These allow you to supplement a skill set in your current leadership role and broaden your capabilities.

    Beyond formal education channels, industry organizations provide many professional and vocational options. These include credential/designation programs, industry conferences, academies and workshops. These can be a great choice, even fresh out of college, if you or your employees need to reinforce knowledge that’s fueled by practical insights from active experts in your industry.

    Finally, leaders and workers alike can learn by exploring new roles in the current company or in a new venture, where existing skills can be applied while being exposed to new ideas, methodologies and skill sets. So, if you have a staff, consider offering in-house training programs, because supporting and sponsoring this education pays substantial dividends, including being an incubator for new leaders.

    We all have experienced that inner critic holding us back. That voice telling us that we aren’t good enough, that we will fail and that we should give up.

    This is a normal part of being human. But as you enter into a new year, you don’t need to let those fears stop you. You can become your own biggest advocate. You can reframe your internal voice to one that supports you and a bigger vision for your career and your life.

    Here are four ways to begin to harness a growth mindset to support you in getting to where you really want to be while embracing the journey and the inevitable ups and downs along the way.

    1. Get clear on what matters to you

    Life can get busy, and at times you may find yourself just going through the motions, being disconnected from the bigger picture and your personal mission. When was the last time that you reflected on where you are at in your life and whether you are on a path that is fulfilling to you? Give yourself permission to check in with yourself and make it a priority to do this on a regular basis. Ask yourself: What are the most important things to you? Look at how you are spending your time. Are you making the moments in your life high-quality moments? Once you get clear on these things, you will know where to focus your time and energy for maximum happiness and fulfillment.

    2. Create habits that fuel your happiness and success

    Sometimes your everyday patterns and habits can be fueling a disempowering mindset and stress. Something as simple as grabbing your phone right after you wake up to check your messages and notifications can be setting you up for being in a reactive and stressed state throughout the day. Powering through your workday without taking breaks. Lack of exposure to sunlight and the outdoors. Poor eating habits and minimal movement. These are all things that can be setting your mind and body up for success. The good news is that once you have an awareness of your personal habits and patterns you can then choose to take a new approach. You aren’t stuck with behaviors that don’t serve you. By building awareness and then making small changes you can set yourself up for feeling your best at home and at work. What is a new healthy behavior that you are excited about that you can start today?

    3. Try reframing

    Your mind is a very powerful tool that can support or hinder your success and happiness. There are always multiple ways to perceive and interpret events and experiences in your life and multiple ways to respond to what life presents to you. When you embrace a growth mindset, you are choosing to view challenges as opportunities for growth. You are looking at things with a sense of curiosity and newness. I like to ask myself the question, how can I view this in a way that is empowering for me? So instead of fueling a limiting belief like, I’m not good enough, you could reframe this to I’m still learning and I am proud of the progress I have made so far. Embracing a growth mindset also takes self-compassion so remember to be kind to yourself along the way and show yourself the love and grace that you deserve and need.

    4. Set approachable goals and celebrate the everyday wins

    Setting large goals is great but they do require time, persistence and patience. Without daily motivation and encouragement, it can be challenging to stick with them for the long haul. This is one reason why setting smaller and more approachable goals on a daily basis can help set you up for success. With these bite-sized goals, you will move step by step closer to your bigger vision for your life. And, enjoying the journey and giving yourself the positive reinforcement you need to feel your best and stay motivated.

    Imagine someone who never runs saying they want to run a marathon. If all they focused on was that marathon, they would probably feel overwhelmed and not actually take the necessary steps to get to that end goal. Instead, if they broke that bigger goal into smaller goals like, for week one I am going to run one mile on Monday and Friday. Then build from there. They would have more approachable steps giving them positive reinforcement that would move them in the right direction. What are some meaningful large goals that you have that can be broken down into bite-sized pieces that you can start today?

    Embracing a growth mindset is not as easy as just flipping a switch. But with awareness, intention and action you can support your mind and your body in feeling your best while moving towards your version of success in 2023 and beyond.

    You’re reading this article because you feel like an imposter. You worry that you don’t belong or that people will find out that you’re really not as good at this thing as they think you are. It’s normal to feel this way — and there are things we can do about it.

    You’re only an imposter if you keep telling yourself you are.

    If you’ve ever passed off a group of people as your friends or told someone that they look great in those pants when they actually look like they’re wearing a clown suit, then it’s time to realize that everyone feels this way at some point. Even the most confident and skilled people have moments where doubt creeps in and makes them question their abilities.

    Unfortunately, many of us allow these to become overwhelming. We start believing that there’s something wrong with us because we don’t always feel confident about ourselves or our abilities, and we suppress them by telling ourselves how amazing we are without recognizing what triggers these feelings in the first place. It leads us down a path where we constantly try to boost our confidence through positive affirmations but never really address the issue itself: that sometimes things don’t go the way we want them to because life isn’t perfect for anyone (not even for Beyonce).

    Recognize that everyone feels this way at some point.

    Having doubts and insecurities is normal, and no one is perfect. Everyone has felt like an imposter at some point in their lives, even those who are successful and confident now. I was so concerned with imposter syndrome that through it — paired with deteriorating mental health — I actually became one. Recognizing that everyone experiences inadequacies will help you understand that feeling insecure about your work and skills is okay, especially when you’re new to something or taking on a new role or responsibility.

    Accept that you don’t always have to feel confident.

    You don’t have to feel confident in every situation. There’s nothing wrong with feeling nervous, and there’s no point in trying to beat yourself up over it. Your feelings are valid no matter what to the contrary is said. However, if you’re constantly anxious about the possibility of failure and self-doubt is holding you back from doing things that could make your life better. It might be worth speaking with a therapist or coach who can help you sort through those fears so that they don’t take over everything else.

    But for now: accept your feelings even when they’re hard to swallow — and know that there are other people out there who feel just as insecure as you do (if not more). You’ll never find out how much more incredible life can be until you stop comparing yourself with others and focus on getting better at whatever makes you happy.

    Remind yourself of your achievements.

    Acknowledge your achievements. It’s important to celebrate the little things in life and remind yourself of the bigger ones. When you accomplish something significant, whether getting a new job or moving into a new apartment, take time to acknowledge your success by celebrating with friends and family or just by patting yourself on the back.

    If you don’t feel like you have any achievements under your belt yet, don’t worry. You don’t need to wait until one comes along before you start working towards some goals for yourself. And know that setting goals can help make those achievements happen sooner than later — once they do happen, remember to celebrate them.

    Even if the achievement doesn’t seem like much from an outside perspective (like when someone asks how much money was raised at a charity event), celebrating it is still important because doing so helps build confidence in yourself as well as other areas of life where imposter syndrome may be holding you back from reaching even greater heights down the road.

    Asking for help is not a sign of weakness.

    Impostor syndrome stems from a fear that you’re going to be found out as “not as good” as everyone thinks, so you often feel like you can’t share your weaknesses with anyone because it’ll make them realize that you’re not good enough. But the truth is that we all have flaws, and it’s okay to accept our limitations and ask for help when needed. There’s nothing more empowering than admitting that there are things outside your control — and being honest about what those things are.

    By being open and honest about your weaknesses, others will respect and admire your honesty instead of finding fault with it. They’ll also see how much work has gone into becoming better at something (because, let’s face it — nobody was born an expert.) By sharing this information with others, they’ll be able to offer insight on how they overcame similar obstacles in their lives.

    One of the most important things to remember when you feel like an imposter is that most of the things we worry about don’t actually matter as much as we think they do. It’s easy to get caught up in our own thoughts and let them spiral into something bigger than they are, but taking a step back from what’s causing your can help it seem more manageable.

    The next time you find yourself worrying about something, try to take a moment and ask yourself: would this matter if I never spoke about it? Would it still be there if I didn’t talk about it? If the answer is no, try not to waste too much energy on it.
