    She made a promise to her husband to keep their tree farm going

    WOOSTER, Ohio — For Rita Dush, Christmas trees hold many meanings.

    “Stewardship of the land, beauty, and happiness for families,” said Dush, owner of Pine Tree Barn in Wooster.

    At the barn, there is a list of different types of trees that take a while to grow. “It’s usually about eight years before we harvest,” said Brad Moore, Pine Tree Farm’s nursery manager.

    It also takes time to pick the perfect tree. Once customers pick, they cut them down, shake out the pines and wrap them up to go. Though the tree may last a month or two, the joy carries forever.

    “It’s the Christmas spirit — you make families happy. You see little kids that are happy,” said Moore.

    It’s not just the amazing experiences and memories that last for customers. For Dush, Pine Tree Barn holds a deeper meaning.

    She lost her husband two years ago today. Roger and Rita built Pine Tree from the roots of Roger’s family farm, Yuletide Tree Farm, 40 years ago. They never expected it would be as big as it is today, but they made a promise to each other.

    “We knew we weren’t going to live forever, and we both wanted some farm to continue. That’s why I’m still doing it, and I’m sure if I were him and he were here, he’d be still doing it too,” said Rita.

    And so every smile she sees on the farm brings her joy.

    “It’s wonderful, absolutely wonderful, especially with the little kids, but they’re smiling and happy and bouncy,” said Dush.

    Rita sees eight years of work, when Roger was by her side, brought to life.

    “It gives me a reason for being, I miss him,” she said.

    CLEVELAND — An indoor bike park located inside of a warehouse is sure to keep your wheels spinning during the winter months.

    Ray’s Indoor Mountain Bike Park is filled with bike ramps for riders to enjoy when the conditions aren’t feasible outside.

    Nina Buitago, a rider who has been at Ray’s for years, has pushed the limits on freestyle riding. Additionally, she praises Ray’s for what it has to offer.

    “Honestly, there’s very few places in the world like Ohio where you can build something like this,” said Buitrago.

    The goal is to make it as realistic to outside paths as possible. General Manager Paul Radosevich uses the summer months to improve the warehouse.

    “We’ve repurposed like telephone poles, random logs, big gigantic rocks,” said Radosevich. “This place is like, this is massive. No other city has anything like this scale.”

    However, for Buitago, it fosters a community unlike any other.

    “The community is awesome,” she said. “Ray’s is like a world-renowned place. Like I’ve met people from overseas that have come through here.”

    It doesn’t take much to join in on the action, says Radosevich.

    “As long as you can ride a two wheeler you can have fun in this building,” he said.

    A Christmas Story House owner clarifies home won’t be closing

    CLEVELAND — Following this week’s surprise announcement that the Christmas Story house is now up for sale, the owner clarified on Tuesday morning that the property and museum will remain open for tours.

    “We are not closing. We are open and will remain so now and into the future,” owner Brian Jones said in a statement. “It’s business as usual. Come see us.”

    Despite the sale, the property’s Cleveland Landmark status will keep it in the public eye.

    “Several years ago we had it designated a landmark to make sure it would be protected no matter who owns it,” Jones said.

    According to Jones, once the news broke about the listing, the City of Cleveland reached out to him with a reminder of its status:

    “The actual home at 3159 West 11th Street is a designated Cleveland Landmark which should be included in the listing. Exterior alterations to the structure and site need to go through Cleveland Landmarks Commission for a Certificate of Appropriateness. Changes can include replacing doors, windows, roof, painting, porch, etc.”

    After 20 years of ownership, Jones said it was time for him to move on.

    “It has been an honor to be the steward of such an amazing piece of Americana. All founders need to eventually move on so that their creation can reach its full potential,” he said. “There are so many more great opportunities to make A Christmas Story House & Museum an even greater experience for everyone. The future of A Christmas Story House & Museum will be amazing.”

    1 dead and another injured after dump truck crashes into house, both catch on fire in Willoughby

    WILLOUGHBY, Ohio — Saturday morning, a Ward’s Lawn Care dump truck crashed into a Willoughby home, according to the Willoughby Fire Department.

    Witness video showed a chaotic scene unfolding a little before 11:00 a.m. Erika Sherman watched it all unfold. She said it seemed like the driver of the dump truck lost control of the truck.

    “There was a gentleman who was driving. He ended up going over a curb, and off the side of the road, back onto the road and back on the side of the road,” she described.

    She said the only thing that stopped the truck, was when it hit a home on Vine Street.

    Willoughby Fire Chief Todd Ungar said the truck hit utility poles, both electric and gas.

    The crash caused both the house and dump truck to catch on fire.

    Witnesses rushed to the truck to try and get the driver from the vehicle, not realizing there was a passenger in the vehicle too.

    “I was able to capture the good samaritans trying to pull the young man out of the vehicle. I believe one of them burnt themselves trying to flee the man,” said James Guller, a witness.

    Sherman was one of the people who rushed over.

    “myself and other individuals got out of vehicles and ran up,” she said. “The gentleman that ran up to the scene took a brick and smashed the window because we were unable to pry the driver door open,” she said.

    No one was home at the time of the crash. Bystanders assisted the driver from the truck, and he was taken to Hillcrest Hospital, said officials.

    But after firefighters got the flames under control, they found someone in the passenger seat, who did not make it.

    The incident is under investigation
