    I’m generally a big fan of organic skincare. Of course, there are a few brands and ingredients here and there that don’t exactly gel well with my sensitive, acne-prone skin, but for the most part, my skin tends to be happiest with simpler ingredients straight from nature. If you have a similar skin type or just love discovering brands that champion botanical skincare, look no further. I found the crème de la crème of organic skincare, and it’s aesthetician-made. That’s how you know it’s good.

    Monastery products are handmade in small batches and designed to worked with your skin’s natural healing mechanisms. Instead of using harsh ingredients that can often degrade this repair system, the formulas incorporate botanical ingredients, each one chosen for its healing properties and gentle effect on the skin. It hasn’t been an easy journey finding the right products for my sensitive, acne-prone skin, but Monastery products brought some much-needed life and an impeccable glow back to my skin. The brand was kind enough to send me the entire line to try, and I’m sharing my thoughts below.     The majority of our Deep Reviews will feature our editors’ honest, ultra-hot takes on entire product categories or multiple products from a particular beauty brand, but every so often, we’ll sprinkle in a special single-product format called Honestly, I Love It. As the name suggests, these reviews will hone in on one standout beauty formula our editors quite literally can’t shut up about. This time around, I’m highlighting Glossier’s Deodorant ($22). 

    I’ve always prided myself on being a good judge of products that will make a difference in my lifestyle. It’s always a plus when one of those products may also make a difference in my environment. In the past few years, the beauty industry has made notable strides toward taking environmental responsibility. More brands have begun to create clean beauty products that are fully refillable, reusable, and recyclable, cutting down waste and promoting a system that relies on the participation of their consumers to shift the narrative.

    One of the brands that has done this especially well is Glossier, with the recent release of its natural, aluminum-free deodorant. It comes fully assembled with a reusable deodorant stick and case with clear instructions on how to make the best of your product (including switching out your finished deodorant stick for another without needing to toss the whole thing away). Whether consumers decide to fully participate in this effort is up to them, but it does feel good knowing that there are options to change our habits when it comes to shopping for products we use every day.

    When I’m on the hunt for a deodorant, one of the biggest things I look for is longevity. What good is a deodorant that’s aesthetically pleasing and smells good if it doesn’t actually last? I’m sure a lot of people have had the experience of reapplying deodorant throughout the day to combat odor and perspiration. I can personally attest to the matter, as I’m always on the move, and unfortunately, I have a wardrobe that’s at least 95% white and cream. That’s right: Deodorant stains have no mercy on your gorgeous garments. That’s where Glossier’s Deodorant comes in.

    Unlike my zippy morning and evening skin prep, my mom’s is more extensive. She loves to double-cleanse and also creates cocktails of her favorite serums and moisturizers to make sure she’s covering all her bases. She looks for products that are clean, affordable, user-friendly, and highly efficacious, so I knew she’d love Who What Wear’s sister skincare line, Versed, but I needed to put my hypothesis to the test. A couple of weeks ago, I brought home a checked bag full of Versed formulas for her to try and review. My mom was just as (if not more) obsessed with the products than I thought, and even though we each have different formulas we favor, her general consensus speaks volumes of the brand’s quality and lovability for all ages, not just younger generations:

    “What really impressed me about these products was the ease of use. I thought it was truly brilliant to have concise, clear, and easy-to-read information on each product about what it’s made for (e.g., problem skin, aging skin, etc.), how to use it, how much to use, where to use it, and when to use it,” she explains. “You’d think this would be standard information on most skincare products, but this doesn’t seem to be the case. And this information is not buried in small print along with a mile-long list of ingredients. The label literally has the words how, where, when and made for (and the answers, of course) in easy-to-read type on each product. For me, it seemed like a stroke of genius since so many skincare products leave you guessing about how much to apply and when to apply them.

    “In addition, the price point really impressed me since it will make the products more generally accessible. I also greatly appreciate the focus on natural ingredients and the emphasis on nontoxic ingredients.”

    To get a better understanding of how this industry has been contributing to environmental waste, I asked Mia Davis, the director of environmental & social responsibility at Credo, to weigh in. According to Davis, more than 120 billion beauty packages are created annually, and only a small fraction of these (less than 9%!) are recycled. Even fewer are refilled or reused. That means these materials, most of which are plastic, are being landfilled, incinerated, or stuck as toxic pollution.

    The good news? There is a positive shift happening in the beauty industry. For example, Credo has launched its Sustainable Packaging Guidelines, and its first milestone in 2021 was to eliminate single-use items like masks, pads, and sample sachets. 

    “We’re really hoping that other retailers and brands will join us: Let’s stop making stuff that will never be recycled or reused,” Davis said.

    With the pressure on brands to use more sustainable packaging, as consumers and individuals, we can take steps to help reverse this environmental impact now as well. This month, I challenged myself to take a critical look at the makeup I use and see if I could find comparable sustainable and package-free alternatives.
