    With Brazil entering the joyous throes of Carnival, Alpine ski racer Lucas Pinheiro Braathen on Saturday gave it another reason to celebrate — an Olympic medal.It was the first-ever medal at the Winter Games for any country in South America. And not just any medal: Gold.The win for the 25-year-old known in Brazil as “O cara do ski” — the skiing dude — happened on the first full day of Carnival, the pre-Lenten party that fills city streets with revelers drinking and dancing to their hearts’ content. Even if lots of ordinary Brazilians were more preoccupied with that bacchanal, Pinheiro Braathen’s gold-medal glory bumped Carnival news from top spots on major news websites. It was another in a series of recent scores for Brazil on top global stages that have provided what some view as long-overdue acclaim.“This has become one of my top five Brazil gold medals in Olympic history, no doubt,” radio host and sports fanatic Thiago Varella, 41, told The Associated Press from Campinas, a city where Pinheiro Braathen has relatives and took several childhood vacations. “He will be our skiing dude forever.     How Cute Are These Cookies?

    These simple cookies start with a one-bowl butter cookie dough. With ingredients like butter, sugar, egg yolks, vanilla and almond extract and flour – it’s likely you have all of this on hand already! This dough comes together rather quickly and can be rolled out and baked without needing to chill in the fridge first – which I love. To make the hearts I use the rounded end of a teaspoon and then use my impeccably clean hands to smooth and press the insides of the hearts flat. This part is more tedious yet enjoyable at the same time. Lastly, pipe jam in to the hearts and bake!

    The end result is buttery and crisp cookies that resemble stained glass ♥️. These cookies aren’t overly sweet, because we have the delicious jammy heart middles to add that extra touch of sweetness.

    To Make These Jam Heart Butter Cookies You Will Need:

    • unsalted butter (at room temperature) – Lends richness, tenderness and structure to cookies.
    • granulated sugar (white) – Adds sweetness but will give the cookies a crispy edge.
    • fine saltUse either sea salt or pink himalayan.
    • egg yolks – Gives these cookies a richer flavor and chewier texture.
    • vanilla extractAdds warmth and enhances all of the other flavors in this recipe.
    • almond extractLends strong, sweet and slightly fruity flavor.
    • unbleached all-purpose flourAdds structure and is the base of the cookie dough.
    • seedless raspberry jamOr substitute with seedless strawberry jam.

    Preheat your oven to 350℉ (or 180℃).

    Line a rimmed metal baking sheet with a silicone baking mat or parchment paper. Then, in a mixing bowl (or bowl of your stand mixer), add the 1 cup unsalted butter, 3/4 cup sugar and 1/4 teaspoon fine sea salt.

    Once combined, use your hands to shape the dough into a disc.

    On a lightly floured surface, roll the dough out to 1/4-inch thick.

    There’s a certain kind of ’80s hit that lives in everyone’s head, but barely shows up on rock radio anymore. You know the ones: huge hooks, big videos, and rock artists at full commercial power. So why don’t these songs get many plays now? Why do they sometimes get treated like “pop,” even when the artists are considered rock? What makes some of the biggest rock songs of 1986 a tough fit for classic rock radio today?

    Many of these songs, if not all, were fueled by play on MTV. The Outfield’s “Your Love,” INXS’s “Need You Tonight,” Eddie Money’s “Take Me Home Tonight,” and Robert Palmer’s “Addicted to Love” are songs that fit the pop-rock genre as well, but they are still considered staples by most classic rock formats. What put these big rock songs out to pasture 40 years later?

    Biggest Rock Songs of 1986 That You Never Hear

    Peter Gabriel – “Sledgehammer”

    The song is labeled dance-rock/funk rock for a reason: the groove and horns are the engine, not the guitars. It even hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, which often pushes a song into “mass appeal” territory instead of “guitar anthem” territory. Plus, the video for “Sledgehammer” is one of MTV’s most-played videos of all time.

    Survivor – “Burning Heart”

    A lot of people think Survivor is a one-hit wonder because the one Survivor song that gets all the play is “Eye of the Tiger.” “Burning Heart” also has that hard rock, high-stakes, Rocky energy. But soundtrack hits sometimes get treated like “movie songs” more than “band songs,” even when they peaked at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and were commissioned by Stallone himself. Survivor has other jams that never get heard (“Search is Over,” “High on You”).

    Heart – “Never”

    Literally tagged hard rock, “but”Never” is another MTV-era, big-chorus, radio-polished rocket. The song peaked in the Top 5 on the Hot 100. Heart has had two distinctly different sounds. ’70s Heart was about killer guitars. They worked as a straight-up hard rock band. ’80s Heart had a pop-rock sound, but it produced Heart’s biggest commercial success.

    The Moody Blues – “Your Wildest Dreams”

    This song is another borderline case: synth-pop/pop-rock sheen from a classic band that many listeners associate with earlier, more album-rock vibes. It still hit the Hot 100 Top 10 and crossed formats. Do I consider this song a good fit for rock? No, but the Moody Blues were considered a rock band, and this song did very well for them in 1986.

    Honorable Mention: Mr. Mister – “Broken Wings” and “Kyrie”

    These songs were ’80s pop-rock perfection. “They lean into slick, emotional mid-tempo drama. The song “Broken Wings” is more power ballad than power chord, while “Kyrie” was an uptempo anthem. Both songs went to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. That kind of crossover success can later get filed under “’80s pop” in radio programming meetings. Whatever happened, I bought the Welcome to the Real World album from Columbia House just like every other teen in 1986. NOTE: The album and song were released in 1985, but the most popular airplay time fell in 1986.

    Do these songs fit today’s classic rock format?

    Classic rock stations traditionally center around rock singles from the ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s, but “rock” inside a format usually means a specific sound and tempo range. Some crossover favorites get squeezed out for safer “core” rock cuts.

    So maybe the real question isn’t “Are these rock songs?” It’s “Do they fit today’s definition of what a classic rock station is expected to sound like at 7:40 on a Tuesday in Detroit?” It’s a fair question. My honest answer is, “No.” Even though the songs were made by rock bands, and they were huge hits, no, I don’t think these songs fit. They are some of the biggest rock songs of 1986, but they don’t make the cut.

    Bon Jovi’s “Living on a Prayer?” That makes the cut for 1986. Classic rock’s challenge as we move forward is to define the format’s overall sound while respecting its decades. The ’60s need a little representation, and so do the ’70s. The ’80s are key, and the ’90s are still getting sorted out. The 2000’s need to be on the radar as well.

    The one thing that nearly every classic rock song has in common is the guitar. If it’s not guitar-driven, it’s not going to be a “core” record.

    As a rock format DJ for the majority of my career, I will tell you that even in classic rock, the times change. The songs that classic rock was playing ten years ago are not all the same records played today. And they won’t be the same ten years from now.

    Congratulations, you’ve reached the final day of the Brain Health Challenge! Today, we’re asking you to do a few things that might feel a bit out of left field — like getting your blood pressure checked.

    No, it isn’t as fun as playing Pips, but experts say it’s one of the most important things you can do for your brain. That’s because heart health and brain health are intrinsically linked.

    High blood pressure, in particular, can damage brain cells, and it’s a significant risk factor for stroke and dementia. When blood pressure is too high, it places stress on the walls of arteries in the brain. Over time, that added stress can cause the blood vessel walls to thicken, obstructing blood flow. In other cases, the increased pressure causes the artery walls to thin and leak blood into the brain.

    These changes to the blood vessels can sometimes cause a large stroke to occur. More commonly, the damage leads to micro-strokes and micro-hemorrhages, which cause fewer immediate problems and often go unnoticed. But if someone has hypertension for years or decades, these injuries can build up, and the person may start to experience cognitive impairment.

    High blood pressure “is known as a silent killer for lots of reasons,” said Dr. Shyam Prabhakaran, the chair of neurology at the University of Chicago. “It doesn’t cause you any symptoms until it does.”

    Because the damage accumulates over many years, experts say that managing blood pressure in midlife matters most for brain health. Hypertension can be addressed with medication or lifestyle changes, as directed by your doctor. But the first thing you need to do is know your numbers. If your blood pressure comes back higher than 120/80, it’s important to take it seriously, Dr. Prabhakaran said.

    While you’re at it, there are a few other aspects of your physical health that you should check on.

    Your eyes and ears are two of them. Hearing and vision loss have both been shown to increase the risk of dementia. Experts think that with less sensory information coming in to stimulate the brain, the regions that process hearing and vision can start to atrophy. What’s more, people with sensory loss often withdraw or are left out of social interactions, further depriving them of cognitive stimulation.

    Oral health can also affect your brain health. Research has found a connection between regular flossing and reduced odds of having a stroke. That may be because good oral health can help to reduce inflammation in the body. The bacteria that cause gum disease have also been tied to an increased risk of Alzheimer’s.

    And have you gotten your shingles vaccine? There is mounting evidence that it’s a powerful weapon for protecting against dementia. One study found that it lowered people’s odds of developing the condition by as much as 20 percent.

    To wrap up this challenge, we want you to schedule a few medical appointments that benefit your brain, as well as your body.

  • Brain Health Challenge: Workouts to Strengthen Your Brain

    Today, you’re going to do perhaps the single best thing for your brain.

    When I asked neurologists about their top behaviors for brain health, they all stressed the importance of physical activity.

    “Exercise is top, No. 1, when we’re thinking about the biggest bang for your buck,” said Dr. Gregg Day, a neurologist at the Mayo Clinic.

    Numerous studies have shown that people who exercise regularly tend to perform better on attention, memory and executive functioning tests. There can be a small cognitive boost immediately after a workout, and the effects are sustained if people exercise consistently. And while staying active can’t guarantee you won’t develop dementia, over the long term, it is associated with a lower risk of it.

    Researchers think that moving your muscles benefits your brain in part because of special signaling molecules called exerkines. During and after a workout, your muscles, fat and other organs release these molecules into the bloodstream, some of which make their way up to the brain. There, those exerkines go to work, helping to facilitate the growth of new connections between neurons, the repair of brain cells and, possibly, the birth of new neurons.

    Exercise also appears to improve blood flow in the brain. That ramps up the delivery of good things to brain cells, like oxygen, glucose and those amazing exerkines. And it helps remove more bad things, namely toxic proteins, like amyloid, that can build up and damage brain cells, increasing the risk for Alzheimer’s.

    All of the changes brought on by exercise are “essentially allowing your brain to age more slowly than if you’re physically inactive,” said Kirk Erickson, the chair of neuroscience at the AdventHealth Research Institute.

    The benefits are particularly pronounced in the hippocampus, a region critical for learning and memory. In older adults, the hippocampus shrinks 1 to 2 percent a year, and it is one of the main areas affected by Alzheimer’s. Researchers think physical activity helps to offset some of that loss.

    The best exercise you can do for your brain is the one you’ll do consistently, so find something that you enjoy and that fits easily into your life.

    Walking is one option; two neurologists I spoke to said they got their exercise in by walking at least part of the way to their offices. Recent research suggests that just a few thousand steps a day can reduce the risk of dementia. It’s important to get your heart rate up, though, so “walk as though you’re trying to get somewhere on time,” said Dr. Linda Selwa, a clinical professor of neurology at the University of Michigan Medical School.

    Or you could try swimming, cycling, Pilates, weight lifting, yoga, pickleball, dancing, gardening — any type of physical exertion can be beneficial.

    If the thought of working out feels like a drag, try pairing it with something else you enjoy doing, like listening to an audiobook. This is a trick that Katherine Milkman, a professor who studies habits at The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, calls “temptation bundling.”

  • Brain Health Challenge: Try the MIND Diet

    Welcome to Day 2 of the Brain Health Challenge. Today, we’re talking about food.

    Your brain is an energy hog. Despite comprising about 2 percent of the average person’s body mass, it consumes roughly 20 percent of the body’s energy. In other words, what you use to fuel yourself matters for brain health.

    So what foods are best for your brain?

    In a nine-year study of nearly 1,000 older adults, researchers at Rush University in Chicago found that people who ate more of nine particular types of food — berries, leafy greens, other vegetables, whole grains, beans, nuts, fish, poultry and olive oil — and who ate less red meat, butter and margarine, cheese, sweet treats and fried food had slower cognitive decline.

    Based on these findings, the researchers developed the MIND diet.

    Large studies encompassing thousands of people have since shown that following the MIND diet corresponds with better cognitive functioning, a lower risk of dementia and slower disease progression in people with Alzheimer’s. People benefit from the diet regardless of whether they start it in midlife or late life.

    Experts think the foods included in the MIND diet are especially good for the brain because they contain certain macro and micronutrients.

    Berries and leafy greens, for example, are rich in polyphenols and other antioxidants, said Jennifer Ventrelle, a dietitian at Rush and a co-author of “The Official Mind Diet.” Many of these compounds can cross the blood-brain barrier and help to fight inflammation and oxidative stress, both of which can damage cells and are linked to dementia.

    Nuts and fatty fishes, like salmon and sardines, contain omega-3 fatty acids, which are important for building the insulating sheaths that surround the nerve fibers that carry information from one brain cell to another.

    Whole grains and beans both contain a hefty dose of fiber, which feeds the good microbes in the gut. Those microbes produce byproducts called short-chain fatty acids that experts think can influence brain health via the gut-brain axis.

    You don’t have to revamp your whole diet to get these nutrients. Instead, think about “MIND-ifying” whatever you already tend to eat, said Dr. Joel Salinas, a neurologist at NYU Langone Health and the founder and chief medical officer of the telehealth platform Isaac Health. For instance, add a handful of nuts or berries to your breakfast.

    Hours after Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele, were found dead in their home in what is shaping up to be a heartbreaking family tragedy, our president blamed Reiner for his own death.

    “A very sad thing happened last night in Hollywood. Rob Reiner, a tortured and struggling, but once very talented movie director and comedy star, has passed away, together with his wife, Michele, reportedly due to the anger he caused others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable affliction with a mind crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME, sometimes referred to as TDS,” President Trump wrote on his social media platform. “He was known to have driven people CRAZY by his raging obsession of President Donald J. Trump, with his obvious paranoia reaching new heights as the Trump Administration surpassed all goals and expectations of greatness, and with the Golden Age of America upon us, perhaps like never before. May Rob and Michele rest in peace!”

    Then, in the Oval Office, Trump doubled down on Reiner.

    “He was a deranged person,” Trump said in response to a reporter’s question about his social media post. “I was not a fan of Rob Reiner at all, in any way, shape or form. I thought he was very bad for our country.”

    Rest in peace, indeed.

    It’s a message steeped in cruelty and delusion, unbelievable and despicable even by the low, buried-in-the-dirt bar by which we have collectively come to judge Trump. In a town — and a time — of selfishness and self-serving, Reiner was one of the good guys, always fighting, both through his films and his politics, to make the world kinder and closer. And yes, that meant fighting against Trump and his increasingly erratic and authoritarian rule.

    For years, Reiner made the politics of inclusion and decency central to his life. He was a key player in overturning California’s ban on same-sex marriage and fought to expand early childhood education.

    For the last few months, he was laser-focused on the upcoming midterms as the last and best chance of protecting American democracy — which clearly enraged Trump.

    “Make no mistake, we have a year before this country becomes a full on autocracy,” Reiner told MSNBC host Ali Velshi in October. “People care about their pocketbook issues, the price of eggs. They care about their healthcare, and they should. Those are the things that directly affect them. But if they lose their democracy, all of these rights, the freedom of speech, the freedom to pray the way you want, the freedom to protest and not go to jail, not be sent out of the country with no due process, all these things will be taken away from them.”

    The Reiners’ son, Nick Reiner, has been arrested on suspicion of murder. Nick Reiner has struggled with addiction, and been in and out of rehab. But Trump seems to be saying that if Nick is indeed the perpetrator, he acted for pro-Trump political reasons — which obviously is highly unlikely and, well, just a weird and unhinged thing to claim.

    But also, deeply hypocritical.

    It was only a few months ago, in September, that Charlie Kirk was killed and Trump and his MAGA regime went nuts over anyone who dared whisper a critical word about Kirk. Trump called it “sick” and “deranged” that anyone could celebrate Kirk’s death, and blamed the “radical left” for violence-inciting rhetoric.

    Vice President JD Vance, channeling his inner Scarlett O’Hara, vowed “with God as my witness,” he would use the full power of the state to crack down on political “networks” deemed terrorist. In reality, he’s largely just using the state to target people who oppose Trump out loud.

    And just in case you thought maybe, maybe our president somehow really does have the good of all Americans at heart, recall that in speaking of Kirk, Trump said that he had one point of disagreement. Kirk, he claimed, forgave his enemies.

    “That’s where I disagreed with Charlie,” Trump said. “I hate my opponent and I don’t want the best for them.”

    There’s a malevolence so deep in Trump’s remarks about Reiner that even Marjorie Taylor Greene objected. She was once Trump’s staunchest supporter before he called her a traitor, empowering his goon squad to terrorize her with death threats.

    “This is a family tragedy, not about politics or political enemies,” Greene wrote on social media. “Many families deal with a family member with drug addiction and mental health issues. It’s incredibly difficult and should be met with empathy especially when it ends in murder.”

    But Trump has made cruelty the point. His need to dehumanize everyone who opposes him, including Reiner and even Greene, is exactly what Reiner was warning us about.

    Because when you allow people to be dehumanized, you stop caring about them — and Reiner was not about to let us stop caring.

    He saw the world with an artist’s eye and a warrior’s heart, a mighty combination reflected in his films. He challenged us to believe in true love, to set aside our cynicism, to be both silly and brave, knowing both were crucial to a successful life.

    This clarity from a man who commanded not just our attention and our respect, but our hearts, is what drove Trump crazy — and what made Reiner such a powerful threat to him. Republican or Democrat, his movies reminded us of what we hold in common.

    But it might be Michael Douglas’ speech in 1995’s “The American President” that is most relevant in this moment. Douglas’ character, President Andrew Shepherd, says that “America is advanced citizenship. You’ve got to want it bad, because it’s going to put up a fight.”

    Shepherd’s rival, a man pursuing power over purpose, “is interested in two things and two things only — making you afraid of ‘it’ and telling you who’s to blame for ‘it.’ ”

    Sound familiar?

    That our president felt the need to trash Reiner before his body is even buried would be a badge of honor to Reiner, an acknowledgment that Reiner’s warnings carried weight, and that Reiner was a messenger to be reckoned with.

    Reiner knew what advanced citizenship meant, and he wanted badly for democracy to survive.

    If Trump’s eulogy sickens you the way it sickens me, then here’s what you can do about it: Vote in November in Reiner’s memory.

    Your ballot is the rebuke Trump fears most.

    And your vote is the most powerful way to honor a man who dedicated his life to reminding us that bravery is having the audacity to care.
