  • Jordan Addison Case Dismissed, as State Declines Prosecution

    • A trespassing charge against Jordan Addison in Florida has been dismissed
    • The incident occurred at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Tampa

Florida State Attorney for the 13th Judicial Circuit Susan Lopez is declining to move forward with charges against NFL wide receiver Jordan Addison, who was arrested last week at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Tampa.

On Tuesday, Lopez notified Addison and his attorneys that the first-degree misdemeanor trespassing charge against him was being withdrawn.

Having reviewed the charge contained in the Criminal Report Affidavit and/or Notice to Appear, the State Attorney’s Office informs you that the charge contained therein is dismissed and prosecution is terminated as of this date and that the defendant need not appear for any further proceedings in this matter,” Lopez wrote.

The state prosecutor also ordered that the $500 bond Addison paid be returned.

As Casino.org reported, Addison, who plays for the Minnesota Vikings, was arrested at the Tampa tribal casino at 3:46 am on Monday, January 12, after he repeatedly refused to comply with orders to vacate the premises. Addison was released hours later after posting the $500 bond.

    Addison Issues Statement

Addison’s run-in with law enforcement in Florida wasn’t his first time in handcuffs.

In July 2023, the now-23-year-old was arrested for reckless driving after being clocked driving at 140 miles per hour. A year later, the former Pitt and USC standout was arrested for DUI.

Seminole Indian Police and Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office reported in an affidavit that Addison failed to comply with orders to leave the casino’s Jubao Palace Noodle Bar, which stays open until 4 am. Upon being escorted out, police reported that Addison “repeatedly had to be redirected towards the front exit.”

“The defendant was redirected … multiple times. The defendant was then taken into custody for trespass after warning,” wrote Officer Fluellen in the criminal report affidavit.

State prosecutors, however, opted not to carry on with the trespassing charge. That was, of course, welcome news to Addison and his attorneys.

On behalf of his agent and all of his people, we are very happy that we were able to get this thing brought to light quickly and that his name was not dragged through the mud anymore,” said Brian Pakett of West Palm Beach criminal defense group Pakett Law. “Jordan is a great kid, and he did nothing wrong throughout this entire incident. Any suggestions otherwise are frivolous.”

Addison’s 2024 drunk driving arrest resulted in him serving a three-game suspension to start the 2025 NFL season. He finished the season with 42 catches for 610 yards and three touchdowns. Addison’s numbers were down significantly from 2024, when he caught 70 passes for 911 yards and 10 touchdowns.

The Vikings finished 9-8 to miss the NFL Playoffs.

    State Prosecutor

Lopez, a Republican, has served as the state’s attorney for the 13th Judicial Circuit since August 2022. She’s the first female to hold the position.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) appointed Lopez to the role after suspending State Attorney Andrew Warren. Lopez won reelection last November with almost 53% of the Hillsborough County vote.

  • Hard Rock Las Vegas Guitar Tower Shaping Up • This Week in Gambling

Construction of the new Hard Rock Las Vegas has reached a major milestone as the signature guitar-shaped hotel tower surpassed the halfway point of its vertical development. Project officials confirmed this week that crews have completed 28 of the planned 42 stories on the structure rising along the Las Vegas Strip.

The progress keeps the massive redevelopment project on schedule for a targeted opening in the fourth quarter of 2027. Hard Rock Las Vegas President Joe Lupo stated that the vertical phase is moving at a steady pace on the former site of the Mirage. The new tower will eventually reach a height of 660 feet, fundamentally changing the skyline of the resort corridor.

The design of the tower includes a lower base known as the podium, which stands 100 feet tall and houses the first five floors. These levels will contain the hotel lobby, various retail spaces, and dining outlets. The remaining 560 feet of the tower will be dedicated to 675 luxury guest rooms and suites.

Passersby can already see the distinct aesthetic of the building taking shape. Workers have begun installing exterior glass panels in two different shades of blue. Nearly a dozen floors have already been fitted with these panes, which are designed to reflect the surrounding environment. The construction has reached a point where the guitar shape is clearly visible from both the north and south ends of the Strip.

In addition to the new tower, the broader transformation of the property includes a total renovation of the existing hotel structures. The original three-winged tower from the Mirage era is being gutted and will be reclad in blue glass to match the new guitar hotel.

When the project is finished, Hard Rock Las Vegas will offer nearly 3,600 hotel rooms. The expanded resort will also feature 175,000 square feet of gaming space, making the casino floor significantly larger than its predecessor. Other planned amenities include multiple pool complexes, two spas, a new live entertainment theater, and dozens of restaurants and lounges.

Hard Rock International, which is owned by the Seminole Tribe of Florida, purchased the property from MGM Resorts International in 2022. The formal transition began after the Mirage closed its doors in July 2024 to make way for the multi-billion-dollar overhaul.

  • Florida Gaming Regulator Doubles Down on Illegal Gambling Raids

    Posted on: January 6, 2026, 02:00h.

    Last updated on: January 5, 2026, 04:03h.

    • Florida gaming regulators seized over $14 million from illegal gambling businesses in 2025
    • The state also confiscated 6,725 unregulated gambling machines last year

The countless illegal gambling rooms across Florida have been put on notice that their illicit businesses are being targeted by law enforcement.

The Florida Gaming Control Commission (FGCC) is the chief gaming regulator of all forms of lawful casino gambling, parimutuel wagering, and sports betting in the Sunshine State. The agency’s mission is to “preserve and protect” the integrity of gaming activities, including criminal investigation and enforcement.

The gaming regulator says its raids last year of unregulated gambling parlors, often masquerading as arcades, resulted in the seizure of $14,474,336. The regulator doubled the roughly $7.1 million it seized from illegal casinos in 2024.

“I thank Governor Ron DeSantis and the Florida Legislature for their ongoing support of the Florida Gaming Control Commission. Their actions strengthen Florida’s gambling laws and help protect our communities,” said FGCC Executive Director Alana Zimmer.

“The FGCC has been working diligently to halt illegal gambling through enforcement actions across the state, demonstrating the dedication of FGCC’s law enforcement officers,” Zimmer added.

    Record Crackdown

Along with the more than $14.4 million in seized money, the FGCC says it captured a record 6,725 illegal slot machines during the enforcement actions last year. The department seized only 1,287 illegal gaming terminals in the prior year.

Such gaming machines are not tested or regulated by the state for fair play and consumer safeguards. Players have no assurances that the machines pay, with some machines found programmed to pay out far below slot machines found inside Seminole and Hard Rock casinos.

The FGCC and state Attorney General James Uthmeier are hopeful that 2026 is the year when state lawmakers elevate penalties for running an illegal gambling business. Currently, violators are subjected to only misdemeanor charges.

It’s not enough of a deterrent. I encourage the Florida Legislature to pursue heightened criminal penalties and increase the current misdemeanor charge to a felony,” Uthmeier said in November.

“Not only does it violate our state’s rule of law and put our consumers at risk, but it often breeds other illicit acts, like human and drug trafficking, money laundering, and racketeering,” the AG continued.

    Retirees Targeted

With Florida home to one of the largest retiree populations in the country, many schemers have preyed on the older people with illegal gambling arcades where the machines rarely hit big. In September, Casino.org reported on one such arcade near The Villages that reportedly won over $24 million from players in just a few years.

Right now, people can stand to make millions off unlawful gambling operations and just end up with a slap on the wrist,” Uthmeier said.

Slot machines are limited to eight licensed pari-mutuel facilities in Miami-Dade and Broward counties, along with casinos owned by the Seminole Tribe. For a list of legal, regulated slot machine locations, click here.

  • Florida AG Asks Lawmakers to Elevate Illegal Gambling Penalties

    Posted on: November 25, 2025, 08:09h.

    Last updated on: November 25, 2025, 08:10h.

    • Florida AG Uthmeier wants the state to increase penalties for running an illegal gambling business
    • Florida currently only levies misdemeanor charges against unlicensed gambling enterprises

The attorney general of Florida enforces the law but cannot make it. He’s pleading with state lawmakers in Tallahassee to update penalties related to illegal gambling convictions.

On Monday, following yet another high-profile case involving an illegal gambling business, this one involving a county sheriff and his wife who were allegedly involved in the criminal enterprise, Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier “encouraged” the legislature to elevate penalties against those convicted of operating unlicensed gambling houses from misdemeanors to felonies.

Not only does it violate our state’s rule of law and put our consumers at risk, but it often breeds other illicit acts, like human and drug trafficking, money laundering, and racketeering. Right now, people can stand to make millions off unlawful gambling operations and just end up with a slap on the wrist,” Uthmeier said.

“This is not sending the right message,” Uthmeier continued. “It is not enough of a deterrent. I encourage the Florida Legislature to pursue heightened criminal penalties and increase the current misdemeanor charge to a felony.”

    Sun Setting on Illegal Gambling?

Florida has the highest concentration of retirees in the country. About 21% of the Sunshine State’s population is aged 65 and older.

Many older adults enjoy playing slot machines. But with Las Vegas-like slots limited in Florida to the Seminole Tribe’s six land-based casinos and slot machines within Miami-Dade and Broward counties, many illegal gambling “arcades” have popped up from the Everglades to the Panhandle.

The unregulated businesses commonly offer newer slot terminals found in casinos across the nation. But unlike legal gambling enterprises, the games are not monitored for fair play.

In Florida, slot machines are required to have a minimum payout rate of 85%. At unregulated gambling arcades, some machines have been set to as low as 18%.

Unregulated gambling businesses often lack responsible gaming safeguards, and the venues typically have lax security protocols.

The possible financial gain, with many of the illegal businesses reportedly raking in millions of dollars a year, outweighs the possible misdemeanor penalties, says Uthmeier.

It’s time to ensure that the consequences for this illicit behavior correspond with the dangers it brings into our communities,” Uthmeier said.

The attorney general said law enforcement has taken down numerous large-scale illegal gambling operations that have spanned in the “tens of millions of dollars.” However, much law enforcement work regarding illegal gambling remains, as many of the bad actors open new illegal gambling arcades following their misdemeanor convictions.

    Bill Introduced

Legislation to increase illegal gambling convictions in Florida to felonies died in the state House of Representatives earlier this year. When the legislature convenes for its 2026 session in January, the discussion will continue.

State Sen. Jennifer Bradley (R-Union) and Rep. Dana Trabulsy (R-St. Lucie) have pre-filed gaming bills in their respective chambers to levy felony charges in the third degree against persons found to be running an illegal gambling business. A person found guilty of a third-degree felony in Florida faces “a term of imprisonment not exceeding five years.”

  • Atlantic City Casinos Unite to Support Breast Cancer Awareness

    Posted on: October 3, 2025, 03:14h.

    Last updated on: October 2, 2025, 01:15h.

    • October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month
    • Atlantic City casinos are recognizing the initiative in various ways

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and the nine casinos in Atlantic City are uniting in support of the annual initiative that supports research and the early detection of the disease.

Since its founding in 1985 through a partnership between the American Cancer Society and the pharmaceutical division of Imperial Chemical Industries, today AstraZeneca, October has served as the national month to raise awareness regarding breast cancer. Atlantic City casinos are once again recognizing the month through a series of initiatives.

Breast cancer impacts families in every community, but thanks to advances in detection and treatment, survival rates continue to rise. Each October during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Atlantic City casinos stand united with our employees, guests, and the greater community to raise awareness and shine a light on this important cause,” said Mark Giannantonio, president of the Casino Association of New Jersey (CANJ) and Resorts Casino Hotel.

“Atlantic City casinos remain committed to supporting groundbreaking research, promoting early detection, and ensuring care for all those impacted by this disease,” Giannantonio added.

    Pink Lights

Throughout the month, Atlantic City casinos will display pink lights atop their hotel towers and on their facades.

The color pink is associated with breast cancer awareness. In 1991, the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure began distributing pink ribbons to participants. Pink is also seen as a feminine and compassionate color.

Borgata, Caesars Entertainment’s three properties (Caesars, Harrah’s, and Tropicana), Ocean, Hard Rock, and Resorts all plan to light up their properties pink. At Golden Nugget, male staffers will wear pink and compete with one another to raise the most money for breast cancer research.

Hard Rock is selling a pink-colored cocktail all month long, with a portion of the drink’s proceeds supporting breast cancer. Caesars is running a similar pink cocktail special and has committed $1 of every drink sold to the American Cancer Society’s Men Wear Pink campaign. Resorts is also offering a pink cosmopolitan, with proceeds benefitting the American Cancer Society.

Golden Nugget says donated gaming vouchers will be given to Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. Resorts is donating its voucher buckets to the Men Wear Pink initiative of Greater Philadelphia.

Borgata and Caesars properties are additionally offering free on-site mammogram screenings for team members.

For a complete list of all Atlantic City casino breast cancer awareness activities, click here.

    Breast Cancer Statistics

Among the most funded cancers, breast cancer is the most common cancer in women in the United States, except for skin cancers. Breast cancer accounts for about 30% of all new female cancers each year, the American Cancer Society says.

The organization says there are more than four million breast cancer survivors in the US, inclusive of current patients and those who have completed treatment.

The five-year survival rate for localized breast cancer, the lowest grade on the SEER (Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results) scale, is better than 99%. However, the five-year survival rate for a Distant SEER diagnosis, meaning the cancer has spread to distant parts of the body such as the lungs, liver, or bones, is just 32%.

  • Bally’s Atlantic City Unprofitable Through First Half of 2025

    Posted on: August 23, 2025, 08:26h.

    Last updated on: August 23, 2025, 08:26h.

    • Bally’s Atlantic City has not been profitable in 2025
    • Bally’s is the only casino in AC losing money this year
    • Q3, however, has been strong for the New Jersey casino town

The future of Bally’s Atlantic City remains murky after the Boardwalk casino resort revealed it lost money running the place through the first six months of 2025.

On Friday, the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement (DGE) posted second-quarter and half-year net revenue and gross operating profits for the nine casinos in Atlantic City. While all were profitable during the April through June period, most casinos showed their profit margins shrinking year-over-year.

Bally’s profit of just $2.3 million represented a 14.7% drop from Q2 2024, though the period was a substantial improvement on Q1.

For the year, Bally’s remains in the red, with an operating loss of $896,000 for the six months. Bally’s gross operating profit, which the DGE says is a “widely accepted measure of profitability in the Atlantic City gaming industry,” has plummeted 439%.

Gross operating profits are before interest, taxes, depreciation, amortization, affiliate charges, and other miscellaneous items.

    (Image: NJ DGE)

    Bally’s Struggles

The New Jersey DGE reports additionally show that Bally’s is accommodating far fewer guests and getting far less money per room.

In 2024, Bally’s 1,121 guestrooms were occupied 62% of the time on an average nightly rate of $154. Through six months of 2025, those same guestrooms were occupied just 55% of the time at an average rate of $142.

Bally’s net revenue in 2025 through six months, inclusive of gaming, rooms, food and beverage, totaled $90.6 million. That’s down 7.7% from a year ago. By comparison, market leader Borgata reported net revenue of $385.1 million. Hard Rock was at $284.7 million, and Ocean was at $243.1 million.

With additional competition soon coming by way of downstate New York, Bally’s needs a quick turnaround. It’s a bet few would likely want to make on the aged, tired property.

    Positive Elsewhere

While Q2 showed tightening profit lines for most of the casinos down the shore, the outliers being Borgata with a profit increase of 16% and Ocean Casino with a profit surge of 67.9%, the report represents the springtime period before Atlantic City experienced a summer comeback.

Gaming revenue this summer has soared, with brick-and-mortar casinos reporting year-over-year gains in May, June, and July.

Even before the summer surge, eight of the nine properties were profitable, with the eight managing to bridge the Bally’s gap to report a 1% industrywide profit gain on the prior year’s six months. The casinos have gotten creative in limiting overhead and increasing margins, as revenue during the first half was flat.

All operators were profitable, despite continuing pressure from higher costs for the goods and services they purchase,” said James Plousis, chair of the New Jersey Casino Control Commission.

Plousis said the $179.9 million Q2 profit was the second-best second quarter in four years.

“Quarterly results from the spring season, coupled with July’s strong monthly figures released last week, reveal that Atlantic City has been competing well for regional gaming and leisure tourists. The casino hotels have raised the bar for positive visitor experiences, with more than $1.1 billion reinvested over the past four years to elevate the properties with first-class gaming, leisure, dining, and entertainment,” Plousis added.

  • Hard Rock Auctions Las Vegas Relics from Mirage – Casino.org

    Posted on: August 20, 2025, 05:52h.

    Last updated on: August 20, 2025, 06:58h.

    • More than 300 sculptures and paintings from the former Mirage are now up for bidding in an online auction
    • The items include the famous bronze mermaid and brass dolphins sculptures
    • The online online runs from now until Sept. 19

Hard Rock International is auctioning off relics from the Mirage, which it is in the midst of transforming into Hard Rock Hotel & Casino and Guitar Hotel Las Vegas.

The Mirage’s atrium and volcano were both destroyed by the property’s new owners to make room for the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino and Guitar Hotel. (Image: tripadvisor.com)

The 30-day online auction, hosted by LA-based Prime Auctioneers on liveauctioneers.com, spans decades of history from the game-changing hotel opened by Steve Wynn in November 1989. It includes more than 300 pieces of artwork and memorabilia once displayed front-of-house and behind the scenes.

The auction includes two of these bronze mermaid statues, which famously welcomed guests at The Mirage’s check-in area in front of the large aquarium. According to multiple sources, they were designed by Arlin Robins. (Hard Rock)

Going to the highest bidder will be the famous bronze mermaid and brass dolphin statues (two each), 50 pieces from glass artist Dale Chihuly, and numerous items tied to the defunct resort’s volcano attraction and Siegfried & Roy show. (No, not, the Siegfried & Roy statue. That was donated to the Neon Museum!)

“The Mirage stood as an iconic destination that featured an extensive collection of artwork that helped define the resort’s unique atmosphere throughout the years,” Joe Lupo, president of Hard Rock Las Vegas, said in a statement. “This auction gives collectors, Las Vegas enthusiasts, past guests who adored The Mirage and historians the chance to acquire authentic pieces from this storied resort.”

Florida-based Hard Rock International purchased the operations of the Mirage for $1.076 billion from MGM Resorts in 2022. It shuttered the iconic resort on July 17, 2024 and immediately began demolishing some of its features and gutting the contents of the tri-tower main structure.

The beloved artificial volcano was demolished in August, followed by the domed atrium in January.

The second Hard Rock Las Vegas (the first is now Virgin Hotels Las Vegas) is expected to open, complete with a guitar-shaped tower where the volcano once stood, in the second half of 2027.

To register and see the Mirage Collection auction items, click here. Online bidding is open now through Sept. 19. Live bidding begins Sept. 20 at 10 a.m. PT.

  • Las Vegas’ Mirage Resort to close after 34-year run. Volcano to go dormant

Las Vegas’ Mirage Resort to close after 34-year run. Volcano to go dormant

Once hailed as “Las Vegas’ first 21 Century resort,” The Mirage Hotel & Casino confirmed Wednesday that its iconic volcano outside of its front entrance is going dormant less than a quarter of a century into the new millennium.

Owner Hard Rock International announced the hotel will cease operations on July 17, with bookings being accepted until July 14. The iconic resort — sporting a jungle-fantasy theme —was perhaps best known for its exploding 54-foot man-made volcano, magicians Siegfried and Roy, and its white tigers and dolphins.

“We’d like to thank the Las Vegas community and team members for warmly welcoming Hard Rock after enjoying 34 years at The Mirage,” said Jim Allen, Chairman of Hard Rock International in a statement.

The resort is expected to be redeveloped into the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino and Guitar Hotel Las Vegas, with the volcano giving way to a nearly 700-foot guitar-shaped hotel. The project is expected to open in spring 2027. A similar 638-room hotel stands in Hollywood, Fla.

The Associated Press reported that more than 3,000 employees will be laid off. Hard Rock acknowledged it would pay roughly $80 million in severance packages for union and nonunion labor.

The Culinary and Bartenders Union accounts for about 1,700 Mirage workers. It announced Wednesday that its workers have two options.

The first was a severance package of $2,000 for every year of service plus six months of pension and health benefits. The second option gives employees a lesser, undisclosed amount while maintaining seniority rights for the duration of the property’s closure along with 36 months of recall rights for jobs at the new hotel.

“Culinary Union members at The Mirage have a strong union contract, ensuring that workers are protected, even as the property closes its doors entirely for three years from July 2024 – May 2027,” said Ted Pappageorge, Culinary Union secretary-treasurer, in a statement Wednesday.

The new hotel is projected to employ nearly 7,000 employees, according to Hard Rock management, while 2,500 construction jobs are expected during the rebuilding process.

Hard Rock said that all reservations beyond July 14 would be canceled and that guests should contact the guest services department or booking agency for a refund.

The Mirage’s closure is the second on the strip this year.

In April, the 66-year-old Tropicana closed its doors to make way for a 30,000-seat stadium that is expected to serve as the home of the Oakland A’s.

The Mirage’s opening by casino tycoon Stephen A. Wynn in 1989 was hailed as the ushering of a new era of resorts. It was the first strip hotel to open since the MGM Grand in 1973.

Wynn shelled out $600 million, then the most expensive casino project, for the sprawling 103-acre property.

The Mirage was the first fully integrated hotel, according to Alan Feldman, a Distinguished Fellow at UNLV’s International Gaming Institute.

Integration meant operating and treating all facets of the resort, including casino, food and beverage, retail, entertainment and convention space, with equal importance, according to Feldman, who rose to become an executive with the Mirage and stayed from 1989 to 2019.

Feldman said hotel owners previously cared first about the casino and “everything else was last.”

“They gave away entertainment, food and rooms as long as someone came and played,” said Feldman. “The Mirage was the first to believe you could actually make money in these areas if you invested enough.”

Its glistening 30-story white-and-gold towers were said to make neighboring Caesars Palace look “retiring by comparison.” Traffic occasionally backed up on the strip as engineers tested gas-flared flames 40 feet into the air every few minutes.

“People just got out of the cars and went over to see what was going on,” one limousine driver said at the time.

The hotel included a 20,000-gallon fish tank at its reception desk and 3,049 rooms.

Its animals — and its white tiger habitat — brought the resort fame and infamy, including in 2003 when a tiger critically injured magician Roy Horn.

The Mirage’s opening kicked off a resort building and remodeling spree that included the debut of the Circus Circus’ Excalibur in June 1990, the $250-million renovation of Caesars Palace and the opening of Treasure Island in 1994.

Mirage Las Vegas Announces Closing Date • This Week in Gambling

Well, we knew it was coming but it still hurts. The era of the Mirage Las Vegas will come to and end this summer, ushering in new ownership with a new look on The Strip, as Hard Rock International finally steps into a prime time location. This despite a previous announcement that the resort would remain in place through 2025.

The announcement came late yesterday, and a July 17th closing date for Mirage Las Vegas was made official. The iconic volcano attraction will not survive the changes, but will be replaced by a 660-foot guitar-shaped hotel. The 3,000 plus employees will be out of work… at least for now.

Your last chance to stay at the Mirage will be July 14th. The rebranded property is scheduled to reopen in the spring of 2027. It was quite a run from the opening of the property in November of 1989 as Steve Wynn’s first project on Las Vegas Boulevard. Wynn sold Mirage to MGM in 2000.

In a press release, Hard Rock CEO Jim Allen stated that the company would “…like to thank the Las Vegas community and team members for warmly welcoming Hard Rock after 34 years at the Mirage.” This change to the Vegas skyline is the most recent, after the city welcomed the Sphere not long ago, and recently said goodbye to Tropicana.

Hard Rock purchased the property and took ownership of Mirage Las Vegas in late 2021, becoming the first Strip property to be owned by Tribal Gaming via the Florida Seminoles. The new guitar shaped hotel building will stand 37 floors high with about 600 guest rooms, while the existing Mirage hotel tower will remain with its 31 floors.
