    Travelers give thanks on Thanksgiving

While most of us have arrived at the home of our loved ones to enjoy a day filled with food, family, friends, football and fun, others are hosting the biggest meal of the year.

No matter if you are the person traveling or the person cooking and preparing Thanksgiving dinner, this is when we look around the table and give thanks for our families and the people in our lives.

Getting to those people in our lives could be a bit of an adventure.

The FAA predicts this will be the busiest Thanksgiving, travelwise, in 15 years.

WTOP spoke to some of those travelers on Thanksgiving Eve at the rest area off Interstate 95 in Laurel, Maryland.

Linsey Dunbar, along with her husband and two daughters, is traveling from Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, to northeast Maryland. She said this was a very special Thanksgiving for her family.

“We just came back from this summer from Japan, so we didn’t get to do holidays with families the last two years,” Dunbar said.

While the Sinha family were all excited about the trip to New York, Harsha said her husband, Vikas, needed the rest.

“He works as a psychiatrist at MedStar,” Harsha said. “For the last 40 days, he’s been working continuously.”

Vikas did acknowledge that he appreciates some time off.

“I actually enjoy working, so I’m a little bit tired, but I think it’s a good time to spend time with family and especially with the holidays and traditions, Vikas said.

The Sinha’s 5-year-old son impressed his parents by saying he was thankful for the whole planet.

One of the families at the rest stop were not traveling, but taking in the busy roads.

Neko and Zayden are locals and come by the rest stop nearly every day after school to stand by the road to watch the 18-wheelers drive by.

“He’s autistic and nonverbal,” Neko said. “So, he just likes coming out here and watching trucks.”

The single dad said his nearly 9-year-old son loves doing the universal pull sign for truck drivers to honk their horns, which happens a lot.

“A lot of truck drivers start to recognize him too, so we don’t have to do it as much,” Neko said.

While Neko stood with his son motioning the trucks to honk, he said he has a lot to be thankful for.

“I’m thankful for my health. I’m thankful that I have a healthy son and thankful for my position in life right now,” the father said.

Austin Pets Alive! | Ready, Set, Rally!

    Feb 13, 2023

As one of Austin Subaru’s 2023 “pillar partners,” APA! has the opportunity to attend several events hosted or sponsored by the philanthropic company throughout the year!

Ready, Set, Rally was the first of these events, which took place on February 4th. Austin Subaru recently welcomed a “dealership dog” and used this event to welcome Rally to the team!

Taking place just days after one of Austin’s historic winter weather events, this event was welcomed with the warmth of the sunshine and the event hosted 250+ people who were, no doubt, excited to meet Rally and enjoy the sun after several days of navigating ice covering the city.

APA!, along with Austin Subaru’s six other 2023 pillar partners, took the opportunity to connect with event-goers to share more about our organization and how we serve this community. In addition, we hosted a pet adoption!

Several dogs, including Elastigirl and Mr. Bane came out with their fosters to enjoy the event. One of our puppers even found their loving home! Getting to show off our foster dogs is always a ton of fun, but even better when they find their adoptive homes!

We’re looking forward to a full year of partnering with our friends at Austin Subaru and are grateful to be one of their pillar partners!

  • Austin Pets Alive! | Support Needed Today for APA!

Austin Pets Alive! | Support Needed Today for APA!

This is the week! Austin City Council will vote Thursday on the future of Austin Pets Alive! at Town Lake Animal Center.

The animals depend on the support of the greater Austin animal-loving community and we are asking if you will take one more quick action to confirm your support for our resolution, agenda item #38.

We want this resolution to pass, as it clearly removes the restriction that would prevent us from saving the lives of those on death row all over our state. This is important because we have long demonstrated that we can save lives in need while also maintaining that Austin’s No Kill status is first and foremost.

We are grateful the resolution also directs City animal services staff to negotiate with APA! regarding the percentage of animals we are responsible for pulling from the city shelter and clearly indicates those animals should be based on those at risk of euthanasia. This has always been the intent of our partnership with the City and we are eager to ensure our contract reflects that.

We really need you in this final stretch. Please register your support of Agenda Item #38 before the deadline on Wednesday at noon. The best part: you don’t have to speak or show up at the Council Meeting! You only need to click on this form and indicate your support for Agenda Item #38.

    The instructions are simple:

    • Check the first box for the regular Austin City Council meeting,
    • Select item #38 from the drop-down menu,
    • Click “no” that you do not wish to speak,
    • Click “For” for your position,
    • Fill out your identification information and in the box for the topic, please type, “Vote Yes on Item #38.”

That’s it! Your voice will then be counted in support of Thursday’s meeting!

Just as you help us every day by fostering, adopting, volunteering, and donating to find homes for animals, we really need you to act now so APA! can land safely and continue our important work with as few interruptions as possible.

We are incredibly grateful to Council Member Leslie Pool for her leadership on this resolution and to Mayor Adler, Council Member Kitchen, Council Member Fuentes, and Council Member Casar for co-sponsoring. Please join us in thanking them for their support for APA! and No Kill. We know the Council offices are keeping track of people who email/call in favor of agenda item #38, so it is very important that you fill out that form before noon on Wednesday!

Thank you for being here for the animals, all the animals, and ensuring that APA! continues to keep Austin No Kill.

Austin Pets Alive! | Lessons Learned from Layla

    Sep 23, 2021

“With the recent passing of my dog Layla, I felt compelled to tell you about our story together.”

“This letter is as much for me as it is to document a life that was so filled with value, love, and lessons about relationships and respect.

I am beyond grateful to have had this amazing dog in my life.”

“Layla was my most challenging pet. She was very different yet I learned so much from her. She made me a much better dog mom, teacher, and human being.

She was our first rescue dog. We adopted her from APA! over 12 years ago on South Congress while we had family visiting for Thanksgiving. She came with the name “Poppy.”

“She came with a bag of medicine and some loving care instructions. She was quite sick and required a great deal of extra attention. She spent the first months of her life in our master bathroom because she was a pretty sick little puppy.

I thought I was not up for the challenge but with phone support and kindness from Dr. Jefferon, and a few wonderful phone counselors, we made it. I am so grateful for the support because I never would have known the amazing experience of truly developing the loving and mutual respect between myself and this wonderful pup.”

“Layla was a different type of dog. I have always had super social dogs – Golden Retrievers and Westies.

They are sweet and pleasing and just want to be with you. They love everyone. Not Layla, she was scared early on and she did not like other dogs so group classes and social events, even walking in heavily populated areas was not for her. She and I learned about each other. I watched her and learned her cues.”

“As an elementary school teacher, I became a better teacher because of Layla. I learned to look for cues and to really watch and learn what she (& my students) needed. I have found there are a lot of Laylas out there. She became my first thought when I had a student that did not get along with others and I stayed patient.

They would be my “Laylas.” I loved her unconditionally and respected her for what she needed and in return, she loved and respected me, even up to the last moment.”

“A few weeks ago, she got very sick and had all the signs of cancer. That last day, one of the hardest days of my life, we went for a ride, her favorite thing to do. I told her how grateful I was to have her in my life and she went for a short walk because that was what she wanted to do. Layla trusted me at the end when I told her to come to lay down on her bed and had a vet put her to sleep on her favorite bed in front of her favorite window.”

“I will forever be grateful for this amazing and loving relationship that I experienced.”
