    3 Types of Intuition & How to Use Them, According to Sonia Choquette

    What I have realized is, we have different levels of intuition and they work on different arenas of our life and they feel different,” Sonia explains. 

    What she’s getting at are the three types of intuition—red, green, and white. And each plays a different role in your life.

    Red light intuition

    The red light intuition is “the basic intuition most people have.” It’s primal and deeply rooted in your survival instincts.

    It acts like a stop sign for potential danger. That could be a prickling feeling you get when something feels off, hesitating before making a risky investment, or stepping away from an unsettling situation.

    Honing in on the red light intuition requires you to put trust in yourself. When you get a bad vibe, don’t dismiss it. 

    Instead, as Sonia suggests, pay attention to an unexplainable discomfort in your gut or a change in your breathing. Learn to interpret these signals as a red light telling you to stop.

    Additionally, practicing assertive communication is key. For example, if you’re out with a group and your red intuition kicks in, simply say, “Something feels wrong; let’s leave.”

    Don’t be afraid to use the word “stop” to get attention. Remember, trusting your red intuition can prevent you from harm.

    Green light intuition

    Green light intuition is “the intuition that actually points your awareness in the direction of creative opportunity.” This is the voice that whispers ideas when you’re in the shower or suggests a novel approach to a persistent problem.

    It’s the spark that ignites when you’re in a state of flow, when ideas seem to come from nowhere, yet they feel perfectly aligned with what you’re working on.

    To sharpen your intuition in this area, you need two things: a quiet mind and space. Here’s a simple exercise Sonia teaches to achieve this:

    1. Ground yourself. Look around and name one or two things you see. This pulls you out of your head and into the present moment.
    1. Think of your question. Formulate a question you need intuitive guidance on.
    1. Relax your body. Breathe in slowly, exhale completely, like you’re blowing out candles. Repeat this three times. This helps release tension and quiet your mind.
    1. Going down the slide. Breathe in again, then “go down the slide” with an “ahhh.” This helps shift your awareness to a receptive state.
    1. Listen for insights. Ask your authentic question—“My question is…”—10 times out loud to yourself. And pay attention to any thoughts or feelings that arise.

    The more you practice this, Sonia points out, “you’re going to get [your insight]”—snaps fingers—”pretty quick.”

    White light intuition

    White light intuition is “​​the intuition of our spiritual path.” Sonia explains that it’s the voice of your higher self, nudging you towards your true purpose.

    Unlike red and green intuition, which are about immediate decisions, white light intuition is about your overall life journey. It lets you know if you’re on the right track, living with integrity, authenticity, and inner peace.

    So how do you tap into your white light intuition? Here’s Sonia’s advice:

    1. Name your spirit. By doing so, it creates a connection with your higher self. It allows you to have an internal dialogue and tap into its wisdom. (Fun fact: Sonia’s spirit’s name is Bright Light.)
    1. Answer the question, “What does my spirit love? This refocuses your energy inward and helps you identify your true passions and purpose.

    1. Change the conversation. Instead of asking, “How are you?” start asking, “How’s your spirit today?” This simple shift encourages people to connect with their authentic selves.

    Surely, you’ve felt it, too—that prickling feeling on the back of your neck, a sudden shift in your gut, an inexplicable hunch that something’s going to happen.

    The thing is, you don’t need to be a superhero to have spidey sense. This innate ability lies dormant within us all, waiting to be awakened.

    The plus side? You don’t have to be bitten by a radioactive spider to harness this power.

    What Is “Spidey Sense” Exactly?

    The term, popularized by the web-slinging superhero, is similar to sixth sense, extrasensory perception, gut feeling, or intuition. Essentially, the “spidey sense” meaning boils down to this: a strong feeling of intuition, guiding you towards an advantageous choice or alerting you to a potential roadblock ahead.

    While Spider-Man’s hyperawareness is made for the Marvel Universe, with all those dramatic precognitive visions and danger alerts, is spidey sense real? The simple answer is yes.

    Here are eight ways to hone your intuitive powers:

    1. Play the “I wonder” game

    Leonardo Da Vinci was fascinating for many reasons, but did you know that he also used to have his students wonder 100 things out loud every single day?

    That’s right, and there’s a good reason he did so.

    Wondering invites your intuition to come out and play. It moves your brain from thinking mode into wondering mode. 

    When you wonder, you open yourself up to being more curious and intuitive. It creates space for new thoughts and ideas to flow.

    So, rather than starting out with wondering 100 things a day, perhaps start out with 25 and work your way up from there (it will become much easier once you get on a roll with it).

    Here’s a little help to get you started:

    • I wonder what color the next bird that flies by will be…
    • I wonder who will call me next…
    • I wonder what the first laughter I hear today will be about…
    • I wonder how many people in the world are drinking water right now…
    • I wonder who’s also looking at the moon tonight…

    2. Intuition-inducing affirmations

    Many of us are familiar with the power of daily affirmations. If this is your groove, try testing out some of these intuition affirmations to sharpen your inner spidey sense:

    • I am connected to my amazing potential futures
    • My intuition can be trusted
    • I have unlimited possibilities
    • I am true to myself
    • My spidey senses are always on point

    3. Spend time alone

    We live in a world riddled with overstimulation—information (and disinformation) overload, other people’s energies and opinions, media, and the list goes on. With all of this noise, it’s difficult to distinguish between your own intuitive inner voice and the cornucopia of outer voices shouting all around you.

    Extraordinary minds, according to Vishen, are “truly at peace with themselves and the world around them.”

    So here’s what you can do to combat the ruckus and strengthen that innate spidey sense: be alone.

    That’s right, be alone.

    For at least 30 minutes a day, with no distractions, no sounds, not even a book. Just you, with yourself, letting your thoughts flow and listening to your inner being.

    You can journal your thoughts during this time. Or simply just meditate. Whichever helps you get a better sense of that real, inner you.

    4. Flip a coin

    Here’s a fun trick to access your intuition: When faced with a decision, flip a coin (heads or tails, it doesn’t matter). The key here is to pay attention to your immediate, gut reaction as the coin flips in the air.

    Are you secretly hoping for a specific outcome? That initial reaction could be your intuition whispering its preference.

    Of course, don’t blindly follow the coin—use it as a springboard for further reflection and tap into the underlying reasons for your gut feeling.

    5. Capture your “aha!” moments

    Ever notice how you get your best ideas at the most random times? That’s because intuition strikes when we get out of our own way. It comes quickly, in spontaneous bursts of “aha!” moments.

    Here’s the catch: If you don’t capture them, you tend to lose them. So, for this reason, it’s important to keep a little notebook (physically or perhaps in a Notes app on your phone) with you to write down these bursts of insights.

    You’ll notice, rather quickly, that your spidey senses will become more fine-tuned and begin rewarding you with more “aha!” moments.

    6. Live in the now

    Almost all of the time, we have one foot anticipating the future and one foot dwelling on the past, leaving us practically pooping on the present.

    This is a sad case for many reasons (mainly, the present is all we really have). However, the case is the same when it comes to tapping into your intuition.

    It can only truly speak to you if you are in the present.

    Alas, your higher self, your truest self, your spidey sense self, has no concept of earthly time; it is only alive in the now. It becomes difficult for your intuition to speak to you if your mind is in the past or the future.

    So be here, now.

    7. Train your brainwaves

    If the insights don’t come straight away, don’t worry; they will pop up later in the day. The more you practice this, the more inspiration will flow into your life.

    Acknowledge those inexplicable urges and recognize them as your inner voice speaking.

    Your Hunch Is Never “Just a Hunch”—Here’s Why

    There it was—a hunch that felt… well, “off.”

    As it often does, it came at the absolute time. Sonia Choquette and her husband had just convinced the owners of a house that was “perfect” for them to generously sell it at a low bid (they were a young couple with very little money, after all).

    We’re going to close on the house in three weeks or four weeks, and we’re going to have the house. Yay! Right?” she recalls in her Sixth Sense Superpower Quest on Mindvalley. “Except about a week later, I woke up and I said to my husband, ‘I have a bad vibe. We can’t buy the house.’”

    Needless to say, the owners weren’t happy. Their realtor was definitely not happy. And her husband? “Pissed.”

    But Sonia herself? “I [felt] incredibly relieved, and I wondered why.”

    The answer came four days after they were supposed to own the house. 

    It starts to rain in Chicago, where this was occurring, and rain and rain and rain and rain for six weeks. And that house was on a floodplain. And that house flooded.”

    Bullet dodged.

    That’s the incredible thing about hunches—they often have a way of having our backs.

    The thing is, we’re all built with this radar. Some of us choose to ignore it. Some of us are aware of it, no matter how much we want to ignore it. And the rest of us? Well, we use it as a sixth sense.

    Now, none of us are Spider-Man with “spidey senses.” But that’s not to say you can’t hone in on your hunch and use it as your superpower.

    What Does “Hunch” Mean?

    Surely you’ve heard of intuition—the ever-so-subtle whisper that something is true before the facts catch up. “Hunch” is simply another word for it.

    It’s like an inkling or a suspicion that you feel about something without clear reasoning or evidence. And it often comes from subconscious observations or experiences.

    For example, you meet someone for the first time and instantly feel like you’ll become good friends. Or you’re walking home and have a feeling that you shouldn’t take your normal route, only to find out later that there was an incident in that area.

    Even for Sonia, as she and her family were standing at the gate on their way to their annual summer trip to Paris, she had a sudden hunch not to get on that plane. She just knew and insisted on going on a different flight. It turned out, the aircraft had a mechanical problem, and all the passengers were stuck. Except Sonia and her family, of course. 

    Don’t be mistaken, though. This so-called “spidey sense” is not the same as clairvoyance or having a premonition. While a hunch can be a part of everyday decision-making and intuition, the other two are generally considered to be paranormal phenomena.

    Sonia Choquette Swears By Her Hunches—Here Are 3 Things She Does When They Pop Up

    Sonia’s a renowned spiritual teacher for a reason: She’s pretty darn good at noticing when she has a hunch on things.

    Based on her experiences, here’s what she does when it pops up:

    1. She quiets down and listens in

    You’re actually listening with your entire body,” she explains. And she did exactly that on a trip to Romania with her cousin to settle some court paperwork with their family history.

    Unfortunately, she and that cousin had a communication breakdown. Because it was during the pandemic, she had decisions to make: Should she get on the plane? Should she make this big effort with all these restrictions? Would her cousin show up or not?

    She decided to get quiet and listen. “Should I go? I got a ‘yes.’” 

    So she went, and thankfully, her cousin showed up. They went to court, filled up the papers, and had “the most beautiful afternoon after that.”

    2. She asks for guidance

    Having a hunch is one thing. But after that initial instinct, what comes next?

    Ask yourself, “What does your spirit feel?” It’s a piece of wisdom Sonia got from her own mother.

    I remember one time I would ask my mom as a teenager; I had this idea that I was going to go out to a party and sneak out, and we were going to smoke pot,” she shares. “I had this whole plan with my mom that I was going to tell her I was going to go babysitting.”

    So, lying through her teeth, she asks her mother if she could go babysit. Her mother’s response? “What does your spirit feel?

    Of course, Sonia’s spirit told her it wasn’t a good idea.

    As bummed out as she was about it, her hunch had her back. That party was raided, and half of her friends got arrested. 

    That’s a very important part of intuition,” she says. “You have to be open, but you can only be open if you’re going to be honest. Your intuition won’t work if you’re not honest.”

    3. She notices the signs

    The thing that Sonia realized is, the more she trusts her hunches, the more she sees synchonicities unfolding and things going her way. As she says, “Intuition doesn’t tell you what you want to hear; it tells you what you need to hear.”

    It does this not only through a sense or a feeling. It also does this through “signs, symbols, metaphors, and sometimes jokes.”

    For instance, one time she was driving to a workshop and she came to a stop sign. In front of her was a car with a license plate that read “SLWD.” Her mind read it as “slow down.”

    Boom! Got it; slow down,” she recalls. “And I was speeding. I was late… So I’m cruising around the corner; see that [license plate]; slow down. And just as I came around the corner, sure enough, there was a cop on the side of the road with a laser gun tracking the speed of the car.”

    There are signs everywhere. Sure, it could be just a hunch. But that’s just one part. The other? Take it in as information and follow through.

    So you notice an inkling. What is it? What’s it trying to say? Are you supposed to do something about it? In all that rush of question after question, you may also find yourself asking, “How can I trust my hunches?” 

    Simple. It starts with taking the steps to sharpen your intuition. And Sonia, as the expert that she is, has some great tips on how you can start.

    1. Give your intuition a language

    This can be a game-changer that unlocks a whole new level of listening to and living from your inner wisdom. Why? Because when you give it a name, like “gut feeling,” “inner voice,” or even “spirit guide,” you’re saying, “Hey, this is real, this is mine, and it’s here to help!

    Most people are afraid to be intuitive because they don’t even have the words to comfortably say, ‘This is my intuition,’” explains Sonia. “So we don’t talk about it, and if we don’t talk about it and we don’t language it, we disappear it; we ignore it.”

    That’s why she encourages you to come up with your language that is comfortable for you. It might feel new and strange at first, but that’s okay. What matters most is that you’re curious and open to hearing what your intuition has to say.

    2. Play “I wonder…”

    Remember the wide-eyed amazement you felt as a child, staring at fluffy clouds and wondering if they were made of cotton candy? Sonia wants you to rediscover that spark—that sense of wonder that clears a path for your hunches to come in.

    The thing is, intuition and all that it encompasses aren’t from the left brain’s logic. Instead, it comes from the right, where creativity and curiosity reside.

    There are even studies that suggest the right hemisphere is actively involved in tasks related to intuition and creativity. One such study, published in Psychology Research and Behavior Management, found that intuition is central to cognitive processes such as heuristic-based decision-making, creativity, and learning.”

    And to tap into this power? A simple question: “I wonder…”

    It puts you into a place of listening,” Sonia points out. “So notice that, ‘I wonder…’ Your head will turn, your internal conversation will stop, and you will actually be open to learning something new. And this is what intuition is.”

    5. Vibe-check everything

    I value my beautiful vibration,” Sonia says. “I don’t invite anybody’s ‘barking dog’”—what she calls the ego—“to poop in my space; anybody’s bad energy to camp out.”
