    “When you look at the after tax equivalent of that yield, it is very compelling.” said Billy Butcher, CEO of KKR’s global real estate business. “The depreciation from our properties has covered 100% of the income generated by our properties, and there’s no tax on that dividend,” he said in an interview with CNBC.

    Larger funds sometimes contain a diversified pool of assets. Categories may include office, student housing, casino, timberlands, radio and cell towers, server farms, self-storage properties, billboards, and much more.

    A new regional cross-border payment system recently implemented by Southeast Asian nations could deepen financial integration among participants, bringing the ASEAN bloc closer to its goal of economic cohesion.

    The program, which allows residents to pay for goods and services in local currencies using a QR code, is now active in Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore. The Philippines is expected to join soon.

    That’s according to each country’s respective central bank.

    The move comes after the five Southeast Asian countries signed an official agreement late last year. At the recent ASEAN summit in May, leaders also reiterated their commitment to the project, pledging to work on a road map to expand regional payment links to all ten ASEAN members.

    “The system will forgo the U.S. dollar or the Chinese renminbi as intermediary,” said Nico Han, a Southeast Asia analyst at Diplomat Risk Intelligence, the consulting and analysis division of current affairs magazine The Diplomat.

    A unified cross-border digital payment system will “foster a sense of regionalism and ASEAN-centrality in managing international affairs,” he added. “This move becomes even more crucial in light of escalating tensions among major global powers.”

    How it works

    By connecting QR code payment systems, funds can be sent from one digital wallet to another.

    These digital wallets effectively act as bank accounts but they can also be linked to accounts with formal financial institutions.

    For instance, Malaysian tourists in Singapore can make a payment with Malaysian ringgit funds in their Malaysian digital wallet when making a transaction. Or, a Malaysian worker in Singapore can send Singapore dollar funds in a Singaporean digital wallet to a recipient’s wallet in Malaysia. 

    Fees and exchange rates will be determined by mutual agreement between the central banks themselves.

    For now, a region-wide system like this doesn’t exist in other parts of the world but down the road, the Bank of International Settlements, based in Switzerland, hopes to connect retail payment systems across the world using QR codes and mobile phone numbers.

    “The ASEAN central banks’ effort is innovative and novel,” said Satoru Yamadera, advisor at the Asian Development Bank’s Economic Research and Development Impact Department.

    “In other regions like Europe, retail payment connection via credit and debit cards is more popular while China is well-known for advanced QR code payment, but they are not connected like the ASEAN QR codes,” he continued.

    Economic benefits

    QR payments don’t impose fees on cardholders and merchants. They also boast of better conversion rates than those set by private payment processors like Visa or American Express.

    Micro enterprises as well as small- and medium-sized businesses, or SMBs will emerge as winners from regional payment connectivity, experts say. According to the Asian Development Bank, such companies account for over 90% of businesses in Southeast Asia.

    “SMBs can avoid the expenses associated with maintaining a physical point-of-sale system or paying interchange fees to card companies,” explained Han from Diplomat Risk Intelligence.

    Marginalized individuals from low-income backgrounds also stand to benefit. As the payment system works via digital wallets and doesn’t require a traditional bank account, it can be used by the unbanked population.

    “The system has the potential to improve financial literacy and wellbeing for the underbanked population,” Han noted.

    ASEAN’s new system will also enable merchants and consumers to build a robust payment history, and provide valuable data for credit scoring, said Nicholas Lee, lead Asia tech analyst at Global Counsel, a public policy advisory firm.

    “That’s particularly advantageous for unbanked and underbanked segments of the population, who traditionally lack access to such credit assessment data.”

    Moreover, “increased non-cash transactions would allow policymakers to capture transaction data and trade flow more effectively, assuming these data are accessible,” said Lee.

    “This, in turn, could lead to better economic forecasting and policymaking.”

    Currency pressure ahead

    While strengthening payment connectivity within the region has the potential to reduce payment friction and accelerate digital transition, it could inadvertently put pressure on certain currencies, particularly the Singapore dollar.

    “The potential scenario of the [Singapore dollar] emerging as a de facto reserve currency within the region poses a challenge that ASEAN states will need to confront,” said Lee.

    “With the [Singapore dollar’s] strength and stability, both international and regional businesses may opt to hold more of their working capital in [Singapore dollars], relying on the new payment network for efficient currency conversion,” he explained. 

    If that happens, it could weaken the purchasing power of other currencies in the region and result in higher imported inflation if central banks don’t intervene.

    In such a scenario, authorities may feel the need to impose capital restrictions in order to protect their respective currencies, which could undermine the very purpose of establishing a regional payment network.

    Regulations pose another challenge.

    Central banks will have to address security and fraud issues, plus undertake the task of educating the public to embrace the new payment system, said Han.

    “These factors can collectively contribute to a time-consuming process,” he warned.

    This kind of coordinated action will require strong political will from regional leaders and it remains to be seen if ASEAN members can come together to successfully implement such an ambitious venture.

    As a CMO, I’m well attuned to the potential pitfalls of AI adoption, and my experiences have taught me the importance of having the right strategy in place to deal with digitization issues as they occur. I will outline the benefits that digitization can bring to a business and offer strategies to help enterprises maximize the potential of AI-powered digitization while minimizing potential risks.

    The benefits of digitization

    In this day and age, the case for digitization is an easy one to make.

    First and foremost, the digitization of resources enables a greater degree of flexibility within an organization. When information has been successfully digitized, it can be viewed from anywhere, at any time, on any supported device. At a time when remote working arrangements are on the uptick, making resources accessible in this way can be a huge boon from a productivity standpoint. Moreover, since digital resources are easily searchable, employees can find what they need more quickly than ever before, thus boosting efficiency.

    A digitized database also allows for better decision-making. By enabling more effective data gathering and analysis, digitization can empower management to gain deeper insights into company performance. From there, they can focus on specific processes to optimize and allocate resources more accurately to fit the priorities of the enterprise and achieve its goals more effectively. Finally, digitization also helps to dissolve organizational silos. Enterprises can ensure that teams can share information easily by converting informational resources into a centralized digital database. The result is better organization alignment, improved collaboration between teams and a better, more coherent customer experience.

    Overcoming the challenges of AI-powered digitization

    AI-driven digitization is a worthwhile endeavor for enterprises that can pull it off successfully. However, doing so is no easy task, and many businesses encounter certain dangers along the way. Let’s outline those dangers and how enterprises can overcome them to gain maximal benefit from AI.

    1. Data governance

    To use AI-powered digitization to drive success, an enterprise must have a strong data governance foundation in place, as those lacking a strong data governance framework can quickly run into issues.

    Poor data quality and inefficient data integration, for instance, can result in inaccurate or incomplete data, which can compromise the utility and effectiveness of AI-based systems within an organization. Additionally, AI models may seek access to sensitive data, which can bring about privacy concerns.

    To prevent such issues, enterprises must establish clear policies and processes for managing data quality, privacy and security before embarking on their digitization journeys. By doing so, they can establish a clearly-defined framework that enables them to gain refined, actionable insights from their data assets.

    Similarly, it is imperative to establish mechanisms and procedures for monitoring and auditing data governance practices. Those that do this can ensure that their data governance remains congruent with the evolving needs of the enterprise, thereby preserving the effectiveness of AI systems/

    2. Ethics

    When attempting to leverage AI for the digitization of data assets, there are several ethical considerations that enterprises must contend with.

    Aside from concerns about privacy and consent when collecting data, there is also the question of data biases to consider. AI can unintentionally bring about unfair or discriminatory outcomes when specific elements of a dataset are weighted disproportionately. Suffice it to say this is counterproductive, so it is essential to set up a framework for identifying and mitigating biases in data. Enterprises can ensure that their AI systems draw accurate, unbiased conclusions through bias assessment and regular auditing.

    Additionally, it is important to remember that AI tools are just that — tools — and humans should take accountability for their use. By clearly outlining where accountability lies, enterprises can ensure that AI-power tools supplement human capabilities and judgment rather than supplant them. Furthermore, by creating a comprehensive human review framework, it’s possible to minimize human errors and prevent AI from arriving at unethical decisions.

    3. Workforce adaptability

    When implementing AI-power digitization, workforce adaptability should be a serious concern. After all, for an organization to get maximal benefit from AI applications, each of its members needs to understand its role and use fully.

    In preparation for digitization, enterprises should seek to invest in AI training for employees. This will allow them to gain insights into the technology’s purpose and develop the competencies necessary to leverage it in the workplace.

    By conducting a thorough performance analysis, management should be able to identify relevant skill gaps in employees and provide them with the tools and resources they need for proper onboarding. Additionally, it’s advisable to set up clear communication channels for employees to air any issues. This will not only enable smoother onboarding with AI technologies but also ensure that there is a framework in place should the organization need to investigate potential issues down the line.

    4. Cybersecurity

    Introducing AI-driven digitization to an enterprise also brings several security concerns to the fore. Chiefly, the increased dependency on AI-powered systems may make an enterprise a more likely target for a data breach. Additionally, AI models may have inherent weaknesses that can be exploited for nefarious purposes.

    As such, having the right security measures in place is key. Implementing strong encryption, access controls, and multi-factor authentication on company systems can help to mitigate some of the risks associated with AI-powered digitization. In addition, enterprises can train employees to maintain data handling best practices to create a security-conscious culture. Lastly, organizations should confer with cybersecurity experts and perform adversarial testing to identify potential weaknesses.

    Schneider Electric was founded in 1836 in France, and in the 21st century it’s one of the world’s most sustainable companies, now helping Walmart decarbonize its scope 3 emissions.

    Over the past 15 years, under CEO Jean-Pascal Tricoire, Schneider acquired automation, energy-efficiency, and electricity brands including Invensys, TAC, and Andover. The company has been reinventing itself from selling electrical products to digitizing and automating the infrastructure of everything from humongous factories to a house on your block.

    At a time when sustainability is top of mind, Schneider positioned itself around energy management. For example, the company acquired start-up climate-tech platform Zeigo in January. And to support its software solutions, in September, it announced a full takeover of the British software company Aveva PLC for $11 million. Schneider reported Q3 2022 revenues of €8.8 billion (about $8.57 billion), up 12% year over year, energy management was up 12.1%, and industrial automation up 12%.

    Forty-one-year-old Joshua Dickinson is the new SVP and CFO for Schneider Electric North America (NAM). Dickinson, based in Dallas, began his career at the company in 2015 and was most recently VP and deputy CFO of NAM operations. He’s now responsible for all financial operations of the approximately 8.2 billion euro (FY ’21) ($7.9 billion) region. I sat down with Dickinson to talk about cost savings, upcoming projects, grappling with digital transformation in finance operations, and his leadership style.

    This interview has been edited and condensed for clarity.

    Fortune: What are some of the cost savings related to the digitization process?

    One of the things I get asked as a CFO in this space is, how do you reconcile the cost to become more sustainable with managing your P&L? When you look at our sustainability business, a lot of the engagements that we take on in our performance contracting business are targeting about 30% energy savings every year for that company’s operation. Once we digitize the facility, we can show people how they’re losing money, and how their operation is inefficient. And when you present that to a CFO or anyone who understands profitability, it can be a very powerful tool to incentivize them to change.

    Schneider Electric has plans to invest about $46 million in your Lexington, Ky., and Lincoln, Neb., manufacturing plants to digitize operations. Both plants are more than 50 years old. Why is the company choosing to undertake this effort?

    It’s to ensure that we’re living out our own story to have an electrified and digitized operation both in North America and globally. But then also, we use facilities like that as a showcase to customers who don’t understand the value of electrification and digitization, especially to operations. During a recent trip to Mexico, I visited our Rojo Gomez plant which was built in 1967. I was surprised to see another great example of one of our older operations that has been on a journey of electrification and digitization, and the tangible value they were experiencing in their efficiency and overall quality of operations.

    Now that you’re CFO, and Schneider will have increased large-scale projects in the U.S., what will your role be in the process?

    I would say more of my role as a CFO at Schneider isn’t necessarily being a cheerleader but making sure that the decisions that I’m making on real estate and our facilities are enabling progress. Upstream supply is a huge part of this. As a large company, a lot of our carbon footprint is with our suppliers. My job as a CFO is to make sure that ESG remains at the forefront, leveraging it, and keeping it involved in the decision-making process.

    Speaking of ESG, as public companies await the passage of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s proposed mandatory climate-risk disclosure rule, CFOs will most likely be at the center of enhanced reporting. What’s your perspective?

    Even if the SEC’s ESG reporting rules don’t go into effect, I think we’re seeing a cultural change in the interest level and the importance of this to people. I think it’s critical that both the CFO and the CEO are fully aligned on the commitments that they’re making. Greenwashing is having a negative effect within financial institutions, but also with shareholders. People are having more and more interest in what a company is really doing about their commitments.

    As a large global company, how is your digital transformation in finance going?

    There are times we struggle with the siloed effect. When you think about the digitization journey within finance, we’re really now in a process of taking the best practices from each zone. Internally, we have the tag phrase “One Finance.” When I was recently in Las Vegas at our Innovation Summit, a few mornings I had the privilege of getting on some 3 a.m. calls, being on Pacific time, and talking with some of my European counterparts. It was an opportunity to share best practices and make decisions on what we’re going to keep from the different pieces, but then we’re going to put it on a single digital platform, a single operating structure where we’re standardizing whatever we can. 

    If you think about it, if I explain my financial performance, say to Hilary Maxson [EVP and group CFO], using different tools and different KPIs [than my counterparts], when she’s hearing my explanation versus hearing from China or from France, that can be very confusing. And we might not be comparing apples to apples, right? I think for a while, we really held off and we were playing defense. But the leadership team right now assembled by Hilary is such a great group of people. We’re very like-minded. 

    What is your leadership style?

    I’ve got a great team and I would say that’s one of my strengths because I’m not an expert in every element of the finance function. My ability to attract talent and manage a team effectively, I think is part of my success story. It’s only been three months since I was a peer of a lot of the people that I’m leading. When you think about going from a peer and a friend to a boss, at least for me, it was a little intimidating. But that’s been one of the most rewarding parts of the last three months, just seeing the closeness and the level of talent that’s on my team.

    PwC’s latest pulse survey, “Cautious to Confident,” finds business leaders continue to show optimism amid economic pressures. Ninety percent of executives surveyed are concerned about macroeconomic conditions. They’re also very concerned about the Federal Reserve’s tightening cycle, and the higher cost of capital (both at 86%). However, the findings also showed that executives are focused on the future. Seventy-seven percent of executives are confident that they can hit near-term growth goals, and 82% are confident that their company can execute overall business transformation initiatives. The survey was conducted from Oct. 12-18 and had a total of 657 executives from both public and private companies.

Okamura has been director of automotive strategy, risk, and agile finance on Ford’s treasury team, since March 2021. She joined the company in 1995 in Brazil as an analyst and held positions including treasurer of Ford South America. 

    Todd Wilson was named CFO at Red Robin Gourmet Burgers, Inc. (Nasdaq: RRGB), a full-service restaurant chain, effective Nov. 7. Wilson succeeds Lynn Schweinfurth who will retire. Wilson most recently served as CFO at Hopdoddy Burger Bar and Hibar Hospitality. Before that, he was VP of finance for Jamba Juice. Wilson also served as Division CFO and VP of finance at Bloomin’ Brands Carrabba’s Italian Grill.

    Jim Benson was named CFO at Dynatrace (NYSE: DT), a software intelligence company, effective Nov. 15. Benson will succeed Kevin Burns, who announced in May his intention to transition out of Dynatrace by the end of the year. Benson most recently served as EVP and CFO at Akamai Technologies, a global cloud services, and cybersecurity leader. Before joining Akamai, he spent 20 years at Hewlett Packard Company.

    Cecilia Situ was named EVP and CFO at Santa Cruz County Bank (OTCQX: SCZC). Most recently, she was SVP and treasurer at Bank of Marin, and previously controller and principal accounting officer. She had a 14-year tenure with the company. Situ started her career in public accounting at Deloitte & Touche with a specialty in auditing community banks, real estate firms, not-for-profit organizations, and other financial service companies.

    Jeff Stafeil was named EVP and CFO at Tenneco Inc. (NYSE: TEN). Stafeil will replace Matti Masanovich, upon Tenneco’s acquisition by Apollo Funds. Stafeil will join Tenneco from Adient PLC, where he served as EVP and CFO since 2016. Before that, he worked at global automotive electronics supplier Visteon, where he was EVP and CFO. 

    Andrew Lazarus was named CFO at Validity, a provider of data management and email marketing success solutions. Lazarus will leverage his experience in finance and investor relations to scale the company for its next stage of growth. Previously, he has served as CFO at several companies, including Electric, Pilot Freight Services, and BAE Systems Applied Intelligence.
