  • Hungry Howie’s adds Detroit-style pizza to menu nationwide

    [ad_1]

The rest of the world is finally starting to get hip to Detroit-style pizza.

Hungry Howie’s is the latest pizza chain to add Michigan’s take on deep-dish pizza to its menu, which will be available from participating locations nationwide starting on Sept. 15.

“Detroit is in our DNA, and introducing this style on a national scale is a full-circle moment for Hungry Howie’s,” Hungry Howie’s vice president of marketing and product development Jeff Rinke said in a statement. “It’s more than a menu launch. It’s a tribute to our beginnings and a bold step in our flavor evolution. We can’t wait for fans everywhere to taste a slice of our hometown.”

The company was founded in Taylor in 1973 and is now headquartered in Madison Heights.

Detroit-style pizza was invented in the mid-1940s at Buddy’s Rendezvous in Detroit by Gus Guerra, who allegedly used a rectangular steel pan used in the auto industry to give the pizza its signature shape and caramelized edges.

Long considered a regional favorite, Detroit-style pizza has become known outside of Michigan over the past decade or so.

Starting in 2021, Pizza Hut briefly offered Detroit-style pies nationwide.

Earlier this year, Metro Times reporter Steve Neavling ranked his favorite local Detroit-style pizzas.

  • Loui’s Pizza in Hazel Park named Yelp’s No. 1 Midwest pizza spot

Loui’s Pizza in Hazel Park named Yelp’s No. 1 Midwest pizza spot

    [ad_1]

Detroit-style pizza — with its thick crust, caramelized edges, and square shape — has not only become a beloved local staple but also influences the pizza scene globally.

One of our favorites, Loui’s Pizza in Hazel Park, has snatched the top spot on Yelp’s list of the Top 100 Pizza Spots in the Midwest.

The family-owned eatery has been serving Detroit-style pizza for almost 50 years, since founder Louis Tourtois opened the shop in 1977. After learning to make pizza at Buddy’s and other local pizzerias starting in 1954, Tourtois passed his knowledge down to his grandson and Loui’s current owner Nykolas (“Nyk”) Sulkiwskyj.

The original beloved pizza is still made the same way, with caramelized cheese walls around the outside created with Wisconsin brick cheese, enjoyed in an old-school setting with red booths and fairy lights.

More than 15 other Michigan restaurants were also on the list, including top Detroit pizza spots Pie Sci, Buddy’s Pizza, and Grandma Bob’s.

Other metro Detroit eateries that made the cut include Freddi the PizzaMan in Melvindale, Major Tomato in Allen Park, and Foggia’s Pizzeria in Southgate.

Basically, Michigan is the best, and Detroit-style pizza tops the Midwest pizza game.

  • Buddy’s Pizza and Slows Bar BQ team up again for summer smokehouse menu

Buddy’s Pizza and Slows Bar BQ team up again for summer smokehouse menu

    [ad_1]

Two iconic Detroit brands have once again joined forces.

Buddy’s Pizza and Slows Bar BQ are partnering up for a second year with another exclusive summer menu of barbecue-inspired Detroit-style pizzas and cocktails.

“We’ve been able to attain this iconic status for almost 20 years now, Buddy’s has been around forever,” Brian Perrone of Slows Bar BQ told CBS Detroit. “It’s just a great opportunity to work together and create something new.”

Since 1946, Buddy’s has been known as the originator of Detroit-style pizza. Slows Bar BQ first opened its doors in Corktown in 2005.

This year’s collaboration will bring back last year’s Yardbird pizza, inspired by Slows’s Yardbird Sandwich with smoked Amish pulled chicken, sautéed mushrooms, and cheddar cheese, tossed in Slows whole grain honey mustard barbecue sauce, topped with bacon, and finished with a drizzle of Slows apple barbecue sauce.

The BBQ Brisket Pizza with brisket, pickles, and barbecue sauce will also return.

A new addition to the summer menu will be a Southwestern Pulled Pork Pizza inspired by the new Slows burritos served at Slows To Go with pulled pork, apple barbecue sauce, chipotle cream, roasted peppers, and onions.

In addition to the three pizzas, the special menu will also include a new Southwestern Smoked Chicken Cobb Salad, Buddy’s famous chicken tenders and wings available with Slows Apple BBQ or Yardbird sauces, and three limited-time, Detroit-inspired cocktails, including: Vernors Ginger Mule, Vernors Ginger Lemonade, and a Grande Spicy Margarita.

The menu items are only available at Buddy’s, not Slows. The food is available at all Buddy’s locations, with cocktails available only at Buddy’s full-service sit-down restaurants.

The promotion is available now and runs through Labor Day.

Eastern Market Brewing plans to offer delivery for its Detroit-style pizza to the entire city.

Eastern Market Brewing Co. is joining the Detroit-style pizza fold.

The brewery based out of Detroit’s Eastern Market is not only adding pizza to its offerings, it’s launching a pizza and beer delivery service to select areas of Detroit through a venture called Elephant & Co.

Eastern Market Brewing Co. began leasing the former Founders Brewing Company Detroit location in September and dubbed it Elephant & Co. The brewery is using the location’s kitchen to bake its pizzas while awaiting approval for a microbrewer’s permit.

Some of the available pizzas include a classic pepperoni with Wisconsin brick cheese and the “Funghi” with goat cheese pesto, roasted garlic clove, mozzarella, and lion’s mane and black pearl oyster mushrooms from Ferndale’s Stoney Creek Mushroom Co. Other specials include the “Elote” with a Mexican street corn blend, diced jalapeño, chorizo, and cotija cheese, garnished with fresh cilantro and lime wedges, and the “Spicy Meatball” with herb whipped ricotta, Calabrian chilis, caramelized onions, and meatballs. A limited dessert Pączki pizza to celebrate Fat Tuesday will be released this weekend.

“Starting in the beer business, we were already experts in fermentation, and we then took many of the same brand strategies that have allowed us to become one of the fastest-growing breweries in Michigan, and carried them over to pizza,” said Pauline Knighton-Prueter, VP of sales of marketing for Eastern Market Brewing Co. “Specifically, focusing on freshness above all of us, sourcing our ingredients as locally as possible, and releasing new varieties regularly.”

For now, the pizzas and Eastern Market Brewing beer can only be delivered within a 1.5 mile radius of the Detroit location at 456 Charlotte St. The company says it plans to expand the delivery area to include all of Detroit by the end of February. Pizzas can also be ordered for pick up at Eastern Market Co. at 2515 Riopelle St.

During the pandemic, Eastern Market Brewing Co. offered beer delivery via its sister location Ferndale Project, and briefly offered Detroit-style pizza but wasn’t able to keep up with demand in the location’s small convection oven.

“The success of PIZZA & BEER in the early pandemic days has always been in the back of my mind,” said Dayne Bartscht, founder of Eastern Market Brewing Co. “Over the last few years, we focused on scaling beer production and expanding our self-distribution footprint in Michigan. That set the stage for this phase of our business: reintroducing direct-to-consumer delivery.”

Orders can be placed online through elephantand.com.

Elephant & Co. also has a location in Royal Oak at 330 E. Lincoln Ave., which has been rebranded from the self-serve beer hall Lincoln Tap.
