Federal authorities say they’re investigating what has now been confirmed as a fatal plane crash in Cambridge, Minnesota.

A social media post from the National Transportation Safety Board says the crash involved a Beech K35 airplane.

The Isanti County Sheriff’s Office says the plane crashed near the Cambridge Municipal Airport, located on 329th Avenue Northwest. When emergency crews arrived around 11:30 a.m. Thursday, they found the pilot, identified as a male, dead at the scene, according to a release from the city of Cambridge.

Both the NTSB and the Federal Aviation Administration will be investigating the incident. The FAA’s preliminary report said the plane “crashed under unknown circumstances.”

Cambridge is about 55 miles north of Minneapolis.

  • Newton man killed while riding bike in Cambridge

Newton man killed while riding bike in Cambridge

A cyclist was hit and killed Monday in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Loved ones are remembering 62-year-old John Corcoran of Newton, Massachusetts, after he was fatally hit while riding his bike on Memorial Drive.

His family is calling for better safety measures on the road.

“On Monday, the world lost a great man,” said his son, John Corcoran. “My sister and I lost our father, my mother lost her husband. And that really didn’t need to happen.”

“There are some moments where I’m just sort of like — finally able to think about something else. And then I go, ‘Oh, I don’t have a dad anymore,’” said daughter Christine Corcoran.

The two Harvard University students lost their father after a driver hit him near the Boston University boathouse.

“Coming to and realizing that this wasn’t a dream and this was actually happening was the worst moment of my life,” John Corcoran said.

“I wouldn’t wish this on my worst enemy, this feeling,” said Christine Corcoran.

Massachusetts State Police say a driver in his 20s lost control of his vehicle. Witnesses told police the car then jumped the sidewalk.

Corcoran’s wife, Barbara Bower, says it was a route he would ride every day for fun.

“Despite all of his efforts to be a safe cyclist, somebody else’s recklessness killed him,” Bower said.

“Poor highway design and poor road design leads to situations where people can get to speeds that are so critically dangerous that they can kill someone,” said Christopher Cassa, a member of the Cambridge Bicycle Safety group.

Massachusetts State Rep. Mike Connolly, a Democrat representing Cambridge, is also calling for safety enhancements in the spot.

“It’s really tragic and unfortunate, because DCR has made commitments to do that,” Connolly said. “We need those commitments filled as soon as possible.”

State police are investigating the cause of the crash. No charges have been filed.

  • Two-year investigation into West Palm apartment complex shooting leads to murder charge

Two-year investigation into West Palm apartment complex shooting leads to murder charge

WEST PALM BEACH — A West Palm Beach police homicide investigation that began more than two years ago has resulted in a Central Florida man’s arrest this month on a murder charge.

Jeremy Johnson, 26, of Altamonte Springs, was arrested Aug. 16 in the April 2022 shooting death of Timothy Gomez Cambridge of Port St. Lucie in an apparent drug deal that went bad. Johnson is facing one count each of first-degree murder and being a felon in possession of a firearm.

During a court hearing on Aug. 17 at the Palm Beach County Jail, County Judge Stephanie Tew ordered that Johnson be held without bail on the murder charge. Tew also assigned a public defender to represent Johnson. As a policy, the county Public Defender’s Office does not comment on open cases.

Police: Cellphone records placed suspected gunman at shooting scene

Investigators say the fatal shooting occurred shortly before 10:30 p.m. on April 2, 2022, during an apparent drug deal in the parking lot of the Parkside Residences apartment complex on the 5500 block of North Haverhill Road, near 45th Street.

A witness who identified himself as a friend of Cambridge told investigators he and Cambridge had arranged to meet with a group of men that night to sell them codeine cough syrup. Codeine is an opioid medication that is used to treat mild to moderate pain and is considered addictive.

The witness said two men exited a Chevy Malibu shortly after arriving at the apartment complex and approached a Corvette driven by Cambridge. Another man remained in the Malibu’s driver seat. A conversation over the transaction took place at the rear driver’s side of the Corvette, the witness told investigators.

The witness said the two prospective buyers then brandished firearms, prompting him to flee on foot. He described hearing gunshots and returning to find Cambridge lying on the ground.

Cambridge, 26, died at the scene from gunshot wounds to his lower back and left shoulder, police said.

During the subsequent investigation, the witness provided police with Instagram accounts for two potential suspects. Police used the social media accounts to identify Johnson and the Malibu’s driver. The witness later identified Johnson as one of the two men who brandished a firearm, police said.

Cellphone records placed Johnson near the scene at the time of the shooting, according to the arrest report.

  • Cambridge Central holds mascot forum ahead of vote

Cambridge Central holds mascot forum ahead of vote

CAMBRIDGE, N.Y. (NEWS10) -Cambridge Central School District students were once known as the Cambridge Indians. Just like other New York schools, the district had to take down its Native American imagery or lose state funding.

“We’re trying to find a mascot that surely paints the culture in a good light and isn’t debatable,” stated Cambridge Senior and President of National Honor Society, Kateri Murphy.

Cambridge CSD asked students at its mascot forum to keep a few characteristics in mind when choosing a new name and image. The orange and black school colors are here to stay.

“Strength, power, courage, pride, and ferociousness. The top two right now that we have from the students are the tigers and the eagles, which came out of that survey,” explained Cambridge Senior and Class of 2024 President, Deacon Schneider.

Before the forum, the student body was given a survey on what they would like to see symbolized. A majority said they want the mascot to be tied to local history in some way.

“Eagle feathers, they give as gifts as a symbol of wisdom and pride. So that would be a great healing sense to our last mascot,” described Murphy.

Some members of the community and Board of Education expressed that no matter what is chosen as the Cambridge mascot, they are glad the students are involved.

“A symbol can bring that awareness and put on a platform to really educate the kids. A constant reminder of who we are and where we came from,” said Board of Education Member, Dillon Honyoust.

A board workshop is being held on March 7 at the school to review the survey and community comments. The March 14 board meeting will adopt a new mascot.
