BUCKINGHAM, Fla. — Buckingham is a rural area in Lee County that according to neighbors, is a safe place to live. So when a suspicious man paid a visit to their neighborhood on Skates Circle, it caught them off guard.
Dolores Medina-Sherman stepped outside on her back porch yesterday afternoon. That’s when she heard a man yelling, and it wasn’t her husband — she was home alone.
“I said hello and a man emerged out from my backyard, from behind the hedges. I said ‘What are you going on my property!’ My property is completely fenced on all sides gated chained closed up,” said Sherman.
Sherman said the man told her he was picking palmetto berries with his family and he got lost.
“No one was picking berries… that’s for sure!” said Sherman.
She believes the man was checking out her house. She kindly gave him water and told him to leave.
“Had he met another neighbor or two of mine, he would’ve found a gun in his face!” said Sherman.
Sherman called her husband who then called the Lee County Sheriff’s Office. When they arrived, they told her other neighbors had called 911 as well, stating the man was banging on multiple doors, yelling into houses and looking through windows.
Danny Cox, 31, is now facing a charge for loitering and prowling.
“It’s a redneck neighborhood around here and he’s lucky that the cops got him first,” said Michael Bishop.
“If he threatened me I would shoot him, plain and simple,” Steve Mamamen said. ” Quite a few of the people out here do possess firearms and they’re not afraid to use them.”
Sherman’s biggest advice for others, if you see someone suspicious, don’t engage. Call 911 right away!
“Be aware of your surroundings keep your doors locked cars locked even if you feel like you’re in a safe neighborhood,” said Sherman.
