Suspect dead, K-9 seriously hurt in shootout involving Marion County deputies

A Marion County Sheriff’s Office K-9 is in the hospital, and a man is dead after the K-9 and his handler responded to a service call in Silver Springs.According to the sheriff’s office, deputies responded to a call around 9 a.m. Saturday for a suspected battery by strangulation. Deputies located the suspect in the backyard of a home on NE 144th Ct in Silver Spring, where he then shot at the deputies. MCSO says K-9 Leo was shot by the suspect.The suspect was shot by deputies returning fire. He was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.K-9 Leo was rushed to UF Veterinary Hospital where he is undergoing treatment.The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting.
