Former Federal Agent Susan Khoury has announced her bid and is running for Miami-Dade County Sheriff. As such, Khoury is the only female Democrat running and has qualified for this position in the August 20, 2024, primary election.

After obtaining master’s degrees in communications and criminal justice, Khoury went on to become a federal law enforcement agent. During her time as a federal agent, she worked on task forces around the country, including the team working the aftermath of 1992’s devastating Hurricane Andrew in Miami, FL.

Khoury has also been at the forefront of Federal Regulation and Mental Health Reform as well as the reinstatement of the Miami-Dade County Police Oversight Board.

Throughout her career, as a federal law enforcement agent, her primary goal has been to utilize the 21st Century Policing Best Practices. Now, these practices make up the six pillars forming the basis of her platform for her campaign for Miami-Dade County Sheriff.

Those six pillars are based on the Association of Chiefs of Police Blueprint and include hiring 25 each social workers and mental health professionals; restructuring of officer benefits, prioritizing officer safety and wellness; expanding and implementing a continuous training process; independently hiring officers in the Accountability Unit; implementing new tactics to tackle crime reduction and establishing a Community Advisory Board.

“As Sheriff of Miami-Dade County I will work collaboratively and cooperatively with other municipalities to ensure we implement 21st century policing practices that address the community’s interests and keep citizens safe without violating their civil rights while simultaneously being tough on crime,” said Khoury.

Additionally, as a candidate for Miami-Dade County Sheriff, Khoury has neither requested nor accepted any endorsements from elected officials due to her strong belief that the sheriff should remain independent of any political influence.
