We’re a bit cooler this afternoon just a day after cracking the triple digits in the Queen City for the first time in two years, but highs remain in the mid-90s across the Piedmont and Foothills to kick off the weekend. A stalled front over the Carolinas will keep rain chances and humidity levels high over the next several days. Expect scattered thunderstorms to keep cropping up in the afternoons ahead; while the severe risk is minimal, gusty winds, small hail, and torrential rainfall are all on the table within the strongest cells. The scattered rain and increased cloud coverage should keep highs closer to 90º around the Metro, but temperatures could easily soar higher in drier areas.
The stalled front will continue to kick up clouds and storms through the start of the workweek. The system is forecast to dissipate by midweek, which should allow for more sunshine and heat to build back into our area. Highs will rise from the upper 80s and lower 90s into the mid-90s in the Queen City by Wednesday, if not sooner. A classic summertime pattern sets up for the back half of the week ahead, with heat, humidity, and pop-up storms dominating our weather story. We may even need to watch for some tropical remnant moisture from Beryl heading our way by the end of the week.
Tropical Storm Beryl is currently a shell of its former Category 5 self after running aground upon Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula Friday morning, but is forecast to regain some strength as it cruises through the western Gulf of Mexico. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) forecast shows Beryl as a high-end Category 1 hurricane at landfall somewhere along the Texas coastline, but Beryl may end up surpassing expectations again as it soaks up warm Gulf water. Model trends push Beryl back to the east after landfall, which could bring some much-needed rain across the Mid-South and Mid-Atlantic states later this coming week.
