Update March 9: After months of waiting, Bethesda has finally announced the “Starfield” release date. Unfortunately, it’s a little later than we were expecting — the space opera RPG is coming out on September 6, 2023. The good news is that the delay will give the team enough time to polish the game’s many, many systems and 1,000 explorable planets.

“We have poured ourselves into this game, and even I’m surprised how much we can pour,” game director Todd Howard says. “It is large.”

The launch date trailer is short, but gives us our best look yet at the anomalies that will be key to the story. They look suitably mysterious and a little bit spooky, like any good space opera should.

The second piece of good news is that we’re getting a “deep dive” into the game in a “Starfield” Direct livestream on June 11.

“There’s so much that we still have to show you. The game has many of the hallmarks that you’d expect from us, but it’s also a very unique experience.”

What Is “Starfield” About?

It’s the newest RPG from Bethesda, of “Skyrim” and “Fallout” fame. It shares similarities with both, like being able to create your character from a variety of backgrounds and traits. Some are classics of the genre, like Cyber Runner — and others are bizarre, like Serpent’s Embrace: “you grew up worshipping the Great Serpent. Grav jumping provides a temporary boost to health and endurance, but health and endurance are lowered if you don’t continue jumping regularly — like an addiction.”

You’ll be able to build your own spaceship, picking from different cockpits, engines, landing gears, guns, and more. And yes, you can change the colour and layout of your ship too! Then once you’ve got a ship you like, you get to handpick your crew members to help operate it.

As for the “Starfield” story, that’s still under wraps as well. Todd Howard has said it’s an “epic role-playing game where you get to be who you want and go where you want.” Fans have pieced together some of the probable story beats from trailers and screenshots. “Probable” is key here — the theories are convincing but obviously not confirmed. Just keep reading to see how the theories about the “Starfield” release date went…

And btw, it’s coming out on PC and Xbox Series X|S. Sorry to PS5 players; hope you’re still enjoying your exclusives.

Bethesda’s space epic is set to come out in the first half of 2023, which leaves us with six months of anticipation. Without a concrete date, fans have crafted their own theories about the “Starfield” release date, and we wouldn’t be surprised if one of them turned out to be true. Until Bethesda gives us more information, we’ve rounded up the most convincing “Starfield” theories here — and we’ll update this page with an official release date as soon as we have one.

Here Are the Best Theories About the “Starfield” Release Date

Possible “Starfield” Release Date: June 29

The latest rumour comes courtesy of a screenshot from GOG.com, so take it with a grain of salt. But since that’s exactly why we’re here, let’s unpack how likely a June 29 release date is. The common theme between the other rumours is that they all fall on the anniversary of a historic spaceflight event. On June 29, 1995, a US space shuttle delivered two cosmonauts to a Russian space station. It’s a less important anniversary than the ones below, but still noteworthy because it ushered in a new era of cooperation between the two former Cold War rivals.

The gameplay reveal trailer included an Easter egg to the Wright Brothers’, the aviation pioneers who are credited with building the world’s first functional airplane. Specifically, a ship seen around the 2:15 mark is emblazoned with the call sign “SV 821 393”, which is significant because the patent filed for the airplane was No. 821,393. That would put the release date on 23/3/23, which is the kind of appealing date that Bethesda boss Todd Howard likes.

April 11

One possible “Starfield” release date is April 11, the same date as the Apollo 13 shuttle launch. Fewer people on the “Starfield” subreddit put stock in this theory than in the next one, but it’s still possible thanks to its historical significance.

April 12

As pointed out by Shadow27AU, the International Day of Human Space Flight falls on April 12. It marks the anniversary of the day Yuri Gagarin became the first human to go to space, which paved the way for other historic spacefaring events like the moon landing and the launch of the International Space Station. That would make it a fitting release date for a game all about exploring space and becoming a legendary astronaut.
