The Squealing Pig, a popular pub among Mission Hill’s many college students, saw extensive damage after a two-alarm fire early Wednesday morning, according to the Boston Fire Department

Firefighters arrived at the scene at about midnight to battle the “intense” blaze. In a video, flames were seen pouring out of the windows of the restaurant, and there were billows of smoke above the building. Pictures shared by the department showed that the fire had gutted the business.

“I heard glass breaking,” Jack Sharkey told Channel 10. “At first I thought it was someone breaking into a car, and I looked out and the restaurant across the street had all its windows shattered.”

The fire also melted a streetlight globe and damaged two cars located across the street. There were no injuries, the fire department said on X.

Deputy Chief Michael Hocking held a press briefing and said at about 1:30 a.m. that firefighters would remain on scene to monitor any hotspots. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

“We have our arson team here investigating now,” Hocking told Channel 7. “We’re going to bring our dogs in and try and get to the bottom of this.”

The Squealing Pig fire is the second blaze to impact a restaurant in Boston this week. Late Monday a fire broke out at Jacob Wirth, which has been under construction to reopen for about a year now, after another fire in 2018 shuttered the business.

Located on Smith Street just off of the busy Huntington Avenue, the Squealing Pig is surrounded by several colleges, like Northeastern University, and medical campuses. It offered its diners an abundance of comfort food choices and beers, and it frequently hosted live music or entertainment. There is also a second location in Provincetown.

The Squealing Pig is now temporarily closed, according to a Google listing.
