SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – A family is mourning the loss of their loved one after she was struck and killed by a car Monday night on Boston Road and Berkshire Avenue in Springfield.

This accident just inches away from another busy road, State Street in Springfield, which has been a dangerous place for pedestrians in the past.

According to the Springfield Police Department, 18-year-old Nathan Colon hit the woman while she was crossing the street and left the scene.

Colon is now being charged with leaving the scene of a personal injury crash causing death and motor vehicle homicide by reckless operation.

The family of the mother killed Monday night want people to know reckless driving took their loved ones life.

“I’m not saying that just because it’s my niece, but in general that’s what they do. All the time that’s all you see…speed, speed. Why would they go that fast,” said the victims uncle.

One Springfield resident that drives down Boston Road every day came across the accident Monday night, and has been concerned with how dark the streets have been for a while.

“And so when I came through I pointed out the fact that those two street lights that were right almost over her head they are out,” shared Gregory Anderson.

A memorial has been set up near the accident with flower and candles for a life taken to soon.
