Fire crews are responding to a plane crash in Cumberland County on Sunday morning.

Three people were on board a single-engine Piper PA-28 plane when it went down around 10:21 a.m. while departing Gray’s Creek Airport.

Multiple people were injured, according to the NC Department of Public Safety.

A source close to the investigation says the crash happened when the plane was taking off. The plane reportedly became engulfed in flames after crashing into a wooded area.

Grays Creek Fire Department is among several first responders on the scene near 6045 Highway 87 South, which is not far from a neighborhood.

WRAL News is working to learn the severity of the injuries and what caused the plane to crash.
