Gunfire wounded eight people at a pool party in southern California on Saturday, authorities said.

Two of the wounded remained in critical condition late Saturday after the shooting in Carson, said Myron R. Johnson, division chief for the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department South Patrol. Six other people were less seriously hurt, said NBC News.

“Everyone is expected to recover,” said Lt. Rick Conte during a news conference which took place Saturday afternoon.

The partygoers were were said to range in age from 16 to 24, according to the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department.

Sheriff’s deputies were called to a private home early Saturday when dispatchers received multiple calls regarding gunfire heard near the property.

Deputies immediately treated five wounded victims. Two additional victims traveled to medical facilities on their own for treatment.

An eighth victim, a 16-year-old boy, had a gunshot wound to the upper body and was found inside the vehicle he was driving at the time of the incident.

The bullet that hit him reportedly caused the victim to then drive his car into a brick wall less than a quarter mile away from the scene, according to Johnson.

Investigators say they do not suspect gang involvement in the violence, but they are looking into the possibility a fistfight preceded the gunfire.

“We are all devastated by this senseless crime that occurred in our city last night,” said Carson Mayor Lula Davis-Holmes.
