SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — The San Francisco Unified School District has reported two instances of trespassers making their way into schools in the span of two weeks.

The first case happened on Feb. 16 at New Traditions Elementary School when a person climbed a wall to go through a classroom window. On Monday, Feb. 26, a homeless person was found asleep in a Lowell High School locker room.

“We are committed to the safety of students and educators, and can use funds such as the rapid response portion of the Student Success Fund to install new PA systems or additional security measures,” San Francisco Mayor London Breed said on X in response to the first incident. “We will continue to work with (SFUSD) to address the community’s concerns.”

New Traditions was placed on lockdown after the man climbed through the window, SFUSD said. He allegedly went to the school’s garden area to climb the retaining wall and reach the open classroom window. He was escorted off the campus and nobody was physically hurt, per SFUSD.

“The safety of students and staff is SFUSD’s highest priority. All SFUSD schools have a comprehensive plan in the event of an emergency. We appreciate our school staff who responded quickly and thoughtfully to this situation. Fortunately, no one was physically harmed. The school has been providing wellness supports to students to help them process what they experienced, and is sharing updates directly with families and staff,” SFUSD said.

At Lowell, the person sleeping in the locker room was found by several students and a coach, per SFUSD. There were no signs of forced entry. The intruder was escorted out of the school and activities resumed as usual.

“The school has safety protocols and security measures in place, and the administration is following up to ensure all exterior doors are locked after school hours,” SFUSD said.
