DENVER (KDVR) – The Wheat Ridge Police Department said Wednesday that no criminal charges would be filed against the driver of a semitrailer involved in an Aug. 15 crash on Interstate 70 that killed three people.
Specifically, police said there was “no probable cause that a crime was committed” after an investigation was conducted alongside the First Judicial District Attorney’s Office of Colorado.
According to police, the driver was eastbound on I-70 near Ward Road when the crash happened at around 8:20 a.m.
After the rollover crash, piping from the truck was scattered across both directions of the highway and caused crashes with five additional vehicles, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation.
One of the vehicles was westbound and was carrying five people. Three of the car’s occupants died while the other two were taken to a local hospital.
Police broke down some of the evidence that the investigation uncovered.
The truck was inspected one month before the crash, and no issues were found, according to police.
The truck had also pulled into a Colorado State Patrol Port of Entry weigh station on the interstate around 40 minutes before the crash. The inspection done at the port of entry found that the truck was around 8,000 pounds underweight and that it was “over-strapped for the pipes it was carrying.” The truck also did not have any brake issues “based on infrared scanning” performed at the station.
Police said data from the truck also indicated it was going 59 mph when the crash happened. The speed limit in that area is 60 mph.
The driver also did not show any signs of impairment or intoxication, according to police, and “the trucking company was fully compliant” during the investigation.
