Happy Birthday to Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin, the Tengku Permaisuri (Queen) of Selangor, who turns 53 today! The former News Presenter who is now the Queen of Malaysia’s largest and wealthiest Sultanate, to mark the day, we are featuring the splendid Selangor Diamond Crescent Tiara!
Selangor Diamond Crescent Tiara | Selangor Diamond Fringe Tiara
Featuring the Coat of Arms of the State of Selangor in the top centre, placed on an upward facing crescent moon, mirroring the crescent moon on the spear in the Coat of Arms, alongside four additional diamond crescent moons each topped off with a star. The Tiara was created by Garrard in London in 1986, to mark the Silver Jubilee of Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah, the 8th Sultan of Selangor, thus it is also known as the Jubli Perak Tiara.
The Diamond Crescent Tiara was first worn by Tengku Ampuan Rahimah to the Opening of the Selangor State Assembly and then the Installation of the Yang Di Pertuan Agong, Sultan Azlan Shah of Perak in 1989.
Following the death of Tengku Ampuan Rahimah in 1993, the Sultan’s second wife, Tuanku Siti Aishah, wore the Diamond Crescent Tiara when she was installed as Tengku Permaisuri of Selangor in 1998, also wearing the Tiara when she became the youngest Raja Permaisuri Agong of Malaysia the following year, reigning for only two years until the Sultan’s death.
Since the current Sultan was unmarried for much of his reign, in 2011, the Diamond Crescent Tiara was among the Tiaras was worn by the Sultan’s niece, Sharifah Dr. Eliza Cornelia binti Putri Jamalullail of Perlis, at her wedding to Tunku Dr Muzaffar Shah bin Tunku Jaafar Laksmana of Kedah.
However, after Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah married Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin in 2016, she wore the Diamond Crescent Tiara for a series of official portraits, including some that appeared on the cover of her book a year later.
In March 2017, Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin wore the Diamond Crescent Tiara when she joined the Sultan for the Opening Ceremony of the Fifth Session of the Thirteenth Selangor State Council.
Later that year, in December, Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin wore the Diamond Crescent Tiara for the Sultan’s 72nd Birthday Celebrations at the Istana Alam Shah.
A few months later, Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin wore the Diamond Crescent Tiara an Investiture Ceremony at the Istana Alam Shah, receiving Royal Relatives from the States of Kedah and Perlis.
Exactly a year later, Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin wore the Diamond Crescent Tiara when she joined the Sultan for the Opening Ceremony of the Second Session of the Fourteenth Selangor State Council.
Most recently, Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin wore the Diamond Crescent Tiara for the Installation of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia in July 2019.
In the years since, Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin has primarily worn the Selangor Diamond Fringe Tiara, but with the Installation of the new Yang di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia coming up next month, we might see the Diamond Crescent Tiara worn again soon!
