Seeking to Help Florida Shelters Affected by Hurricane Milton, Cleveland APL Pleads for Adopters and Foster Volunteers

The Cleveland Animal Protective League hopes to open space to animals affected by this week’s devastating hurricane in Florida. But they need the community’s help to do so.
Due to the minimal space, the Cleveland APL hasn’t been able to take in animals from other shelters in nearly two years as it deals with its own capacity issues. But given the unprecedented events caused by Hurricanes Helene and Milton in Florida, the APL is doing as much as possible to lend a helping hand to Florida shelters.
“During this critical time, we are committed to supporting our friends working in Florida animal shelters by providing a safe haven for their adoptable animals,” said Sharon Harvey, President & CEO of the APL.
This weekend, on Friday Oct. 11 and Saturday Oct. 12, the Cleveland APL will hold a fee-waived adoption event for all adult cats and dogs, in addition to a special $50 adoption promotion for kittens. The hope is to open more cage space for adoptable animals living in impacted areas of Florida. This will lead to more cage space in Florida shelters for displaced animals in impacted areas. The Bissell Pet Foundation, an animal welfare organization, will coordinate the transportation of these animals from Florida to Ohio.
The APL is urgently seeking volunteer foster families who can temporarily house and care for current animals who are not ready for adoption.
“It’s difficult to imagine the tragedy unleashed on the communities in the path of these devastating storms. Both humans and animals are suffering,” said Harvey. “We urge our animal loving Cleveland community to help by adopting or fostering animals who are in our care now, so we can create enough space to bring shelter animals from Florida to the APL which, in turn, will allow them to help animals who have been displaced from their families by these storms.”
