(KVHT) – South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley has released a draft ballot explanation for a proposed amendment that seeks to repeal the state’s medical marijuana program. The program was initially approved by nearly 70 percent of voters in 2020. The amendment to repeal the program has been proposed by a resident of Newell, South Dakota. If the proposed amendment is approved, it would criminalize all aspects related to marijuana, including possession, use, cultivation, sale, and manufacture of marijuana and marijuana products. To appear on the 2024 ballot, the measure would need to gather 17,509 signatures from supporters. It’s important to note that the Attorney General does not take a position on the proposal, and the purpose of the draft explanation is to provide information to voters about the intended impact of the proposed measure. The public has until August 6th to submit comments on the draft explanation, and a final explanation will be submitted to the Secretary of State thereafter.
