GLENDALE, Ariz. – Saquon Barkley received X-rays on his swollen right ankle postgame Sunday and appeared down and despondent when he returned to the Giants’ locker room.

Barkley helped carry the Giants to a huge comeback win, but he hurt his right ankle on the Giants’ final offensive drive to set up Graham Gano’s game-winning field goal. A Cardinals defender rolled over on Barkley, and he had to be helped off the field by Giants trainers.

Barkley at first had his right ankle heavily taped on the sideline. He limped off the field after the Giants closed it out. Then he was carted down the hallway from the locker room postgame for X-rays.

“It’s always tough to see anyone go down, especially Saquon,” quarterback Daniel Jones said. “He’s a huge piece of what we’re doing. He’s an important player on the team. I know he’ll work hard to get back, get through whatever he’s going through. I look forward to having him back as soon as possible.”

His 63 rushing yards, 29 receiving yards and two TDs helped lift the Giants out of a loss. And they helped undo Barkley’s brutal dropped pass in the second quarter that was intercepted by the Cardinals’ Jalen Thompson — the second INT caused by a Barkley drop in two weeks.

But now Barkley’s status is clearly in doubt for Thursday night’s game in San Francisco and potentially longer, depending on what the X-ray results show. Brian Daboll did not have an update on Barkley’s condition yet.

Barkley did not speak to the media in what was a clearly difficult moment for the running back.

He failed to secure a long-term contract from the Giants this offseason and returned on a one-year contract hoping to play his way into more money and respect.
