Sacramento asks that pets be vaccinated after rabid skunks found

(FOX40.COM) — After two skunks in central Sacramento were found to have rabies in October, the city’s Front Street Animal Shelter is asking pet owners to vaccinate their pets.
The city is also reminding pet owners that licensing is required for all pets and helps keep preventable diseases out of the community.
“Such requirements have made rabies in domestic animals a rare occurrence in our area, but the risk is still there,” reads a partial statement from Phillip Zimmerman, manager of the city’s shelter.
According to the shelter, if a pet is exposed to rabies but is not vaccinated, it will have to be euthanized in order to test it for rabies.
A bite from wildlife that is known to have rabies but is unconfirmed could lead to a 6-month quarantine for the pet, but a pet with a rabies vaccine must only endure a 30-day quarantine, the shelter said.
In the Sacramento area, plenty of wildlife could potentially carry rabies, including skunks, bats, foxes, coyotes and other species.
The city shared a link that regularly provides information on free and low-cost vaccine clinics in the Sacramento area.
The city asks that any animal suspected of having rabies be reported to 311.
