PORTLAND, Ore. — A man was killed, and a teenage boy was critically injured in a shooting late Tuesday night in Southeast Portland. Both victims were in a car; the man was a rideshare driver and the teenager was his passenger, according to Portland police.
Just before midnight, officers responded to a shooting in the area of Southeast 130th Place in the Powellhurst-Gilbert neighborhood. The officers found two people who were shot while sitting inside a vehicle. One of the victims, an adult man, died at the scene. The officers provided first aid to the other victim, a teenage boy, until paramedics arrived.
The teenage boy was taken to a hospital in critical condition, and police said on Wednesday afternoon that he had suffered life-threatening injuries and was still in critical condition.
Police added that the medical examiner determined had that the man died from gunshot wounds and ruled his death a homicide, but police said his name was being withheld until members of his family had time to notify other loved ones.
Police said the adult victim was driving the car and working as a rideshare driver at the time of the shooting, and the teenager was his rideshare passenger. PPB declined to identify the specific rideshare company, and did not release any further details about the circumstances of the shooting.
Uber gave KGW the following statement when asked to confirm if the victim was driving for the company at the time:
“We’re deeply saddened by this tragedy. Our thoughts are with the driver’s family during this extremely difficult time, and we hope those injured recover swiftly. We have been in touch with law enforcement to offer our support with their investigation.”
Southeast Ramona Street was closed near the intersection with Southeast 130th Place during the investigation. Police said the suspect or suspects left the scene before anyone called 911, and no arrests have been made.
