For me, Rice Krispies treats have always been one of those nostalgic sweets. It’s been a while since I’ve had one myself, but it’s so easy to recall the taste: chewy crisp texture mixed with the sweet sticky flavor of vanilla-y marshmallow. Whether you tried your first one at a school birthday party or made them at home for a late-night snack with a family member, Rice Krispies treats seem to stir up memories of the past.

Here at Kitchn, we love the idea of bringing more nostalgic treats like Rice Krispies into our lives. Whether you go for a classic version or you give it your own spin, Rice Krispies treats are usually easy to make and only require a few ingredients. And blogger Sarah Fennel’s take on Fluffernutter Rice Krispies is no exception. Shared on her Instagram account @bromabakery, Fennel — who’s known for making “nostalgic recipes for the modern girl” — uses marshmallow fluff and peanut butter to level up this classic treat.

Here’s what you’ll need to make these Fluffernutter Rice Krispies: a 16-ounce bag of marshmallows, butter, Rice Krispies cereal, melted peanut butter, marshmallow fluff, and a pinch of salt. And if you’re feeling extra, Fennel also suggests adding peanut butter cups or crunchy (instead of creamy) peanut butter.

Like most RKT recipes, this one is easy to accomplish. Of course though, these treats will be sticky, so to make sure they don’t create too much of a mess you’ll want to line your baking pan and use cooking spray. Add butter to a large pot over medium heat and once melted fully, add the marshmallows and salt. Using a rubber spatula so you can easily scrape along the sides, stir the marshmallows until fully melted — making sure they don’t burn in the process — and Immediately remove from heat.

Add the Rice Krispies to the melted marshmallows and fully coat the cereal. Once that’s good to go, place the peanut butter in a microwave-safe bowl and warm up for 15 seconds. Add the melted peanut butter and marshmallow fluff to the Rice Krispies mix (you’ll want to fold it in without fully mixing it), creating thick swirls of ooey-gooey goodness. Coat your rubber spatula in cooking spray and use it to spoon the mixture into your greased pan. Press down to create an even layer and cool for about an hour. Enjoy!
