Reader questions where Burton’s marijuana money goes – Medical Marijuana Program Connection

In 2022, Genesee County and other counties received money from taxes on cannabis. When Burton first started approving the recreational cannabis licenses, it was indicated the revenue from the taxes would be used to fix the roads in the city.
In the last three years, the City of Burton has received over $1.1 million.

Where is all of this money going?

Editor’s note: Charles Abbey, director of the Burton Department of Public Works, said the city has put the funds collected in taxes from the city’s marijuana establishments into the general fund to be budgeted toward local and major roads.
In the past three years, the city has spent approximately $13.3 million on roads in the city, raising the city’s Pavement Surface Evaluation and Rating (PASER) rating with Genesee County during this time.
In 2018-19 roads in Burton were rated: 52.9 percent poor; 30.1 percent fair; and 17 percent good.
For 2021-22 the roads in Burton were rated: 37 percent poor; 34.8 percent fair; and 28.2 percent good.

Abbey said the city is doing all it can to keep up with repairs and maintenance of its 180 lane miles of roads.
