Buku Abi, the 26-year-old daughter of singer R. Kelly, bravely opened up about the lasting impact of her father’s alleged sexual abuse on her mental health in the new docuseries “R. Kelly’s Karma: A Daughter’s Journey.”

Abi claims the abuse happened when she was just 8 years old. The trauma caused a domino effect in her life, leading to multiple suicide attempts and a stay in a psychiatric hospital.
She recalled reaching a breaking point while riding to school with her mother Andrea Kelly. Unable to hold it in any longer, Abi confessed to her mom that she wasn’t okay. This led to a two and a half week hospitalization with intensive suicide watch, followed by months of outpatient treatment.

The series also details another incident where Andrea noticed cuts on Abi’s wrists during a shopping trip. This led to another emotional breakdown where Abi revealed her suicidal thoughts and the reason behind them.

Abi says the experience not only affected her, but also caused a lot of guilt as she witnessed the impact it had on her younger siblings. Her brother Robert even spoke in the docuseries about the constant fear of not knowing if his sister would be alive the next day.
R. Kelly has denied the allegations through his attorney, claiming they were investigated and found to be unfounded. Abi, however, says she was initially too scared to tell anyone and finally reported the abuse to her mother when she was 10 years old. While the police couldn’t prosecute due to the delay, Abi says she’s now focused on healing and learning to love and trust herself again.
