Pumpkins at the zoo: Elephants, tigers, armadillos and more enjoy a seasonal treat

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — The end of October is a festive time of year for all, including some of the largest mammals and their friends at zoos across the U.S.
We’ve compiled a few of the most adorable videos from Meerkats in Oakland to Elephants in Fort Worth chowing down on pumpkins in this lead up to Halloween. There’s even an armadillo who tried his luck with a fall classic, the hay bale maze.
Starting it off with a bang is Bibi, a hippopotamus at the Cincinnati Zoo who crushed a whole pumpkin in just one bite. According to the zoo, Bibi is a mother of two other beloved hippos at the zoo, Fiona and Fritz. She’s joined in the below video by sand cat Simba of Zoo Boise and the Malayan tigers, also of Cincinnati, who chowed down on a Bengals-themed gourd.
Bibi and company are also joined in the video compilation above by male polar bear Siku who enjoyed his pumpkin enrichment snack after anxiously awaiting the snack at the Calgary Zoo in Canada. His patience was awarded after he walked alongside the zookeeper who walked alongside his enclosure with the pumpkin.
Here in North Carolina, our state zoo in Asheboro has started posting its own #PumpkinPalooza videos, including a 1,400 pound pumpkin delivered to the elephants.
Bears in Asheboro also got in on the fall fruit snack, including American black bear sisters, Nove and Luna; Ronin the grizzly bear and Anana the polar bear.
A meerkat at the Oakland Zoo in California turned a pumpkin into its own personal playhouse, enjoying both shade and a snack while other meerkats kept watch.
It was a party of pumpkins at the Milwaukee County Zoo, who posted the below video with “gourd vibes only.” In the video, you’ll see a group of Kunekune pigs who demolished their fall treats and an elephant who took a John Cena-style approach.
Their reptilian friends also took part, some keeping a curious distance.
Last and definitely not least is Julio the armadillo. At the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore, Julio scurried through the twists and turns of a hay bale maze.
When Julio is not going viral online for his maze skills, he usually impresses social media followers of the zoo with his ability to sniff out cinnamon sticks hidden under paper cups. If these tricks are any indication, Julio must be an autumn.
