Moving through life’s challenges can be like sailing through a stormy sea, much like Captain Jack Sparrow, braving the tumultuous waters of the Caribbean. Sometimes, the waves are scary, and the path ahead is almost unclear. However, with the right support and guidance, you can lower your anchor to find your way towards calmer waters and discover the strength within yourself to keep moving forward.

Meet Pradeep, a 21-year-old engineering student at the reputed IISER. He was born and raised in Chandigarh and grew up in a small and happy family.

“In 2019 I moved abroad to pursue higher studies. However, despite the distance, I made it a point to stay close to my family, especially my elder sister who is like a second mother to me.”

Pradeep enjoys playing the keyboard and PC games and these hobbies provided him with a break from his busy academic life.

At IISER, Pradeep heard about YourDOST from a friend. The college partnered with the organisation to offer mental health support to students. Curious and needing help, Pradeep decided to try it.

“My first session was with Ms Arshita Sharma. I was not able to speak up about my problem because it was quite sensitive at first but then she made me comfortable, and then I started sharing.”

Pradeep was struggling to focus on his studies due to a personal problem he couldn’t discuss with family or friends. This stress affected his concentration, causing sleepless nights and lower grades. He was dealing with a toxic relationship that impacted his mental health and academic performance.

Arshita encouraged Pradeep to open up about his concerns as she listened carefully, helping him relax. She also suggested that he draw his dreams and discuss them in the next session with her, which helped him express his feelings and gain clarity.

Pradeep slowly lowered his anchor in the deep waters of life and found stability in himself with the help of his counsellors.

Pradeep saw positive changes in his life gradually, through these sessions.

“I was able to make decisions now as I was not that decisive about my relationship decisions. I started meditation and working on my academics in a structured way.”

The counselling helped him focus on his studies and brought peace and stability to his life. And, today Pradeep is very grateful to Arshita for her support.

“She was helpful and made me feel extremely comfortable at all times. The problem was awkward for me to share, but she managed to come up with solutions and help me.”

In terms of feeling better, he rates himself at 4 out of 5, saying that for him, improvement means peace of mind. Pradeep’s story shows that with the right support, we can overcome even the hardest challenges and become stronger and wiser.

We at YourDOST are confident that Pradeep is on the right path to achieving his goals and finding happiness. We wish him all the best in his future endeavours!

Pradeep’s Warrior Tips:
1.“I believe that anyone going through a tough time should share their problems with someone.”
2.“Seeking support in the time of need helps a lot.”
