PolitiFact – Old video, same claim. Video doesn’t show Donald Trump ‘made a new deal’ with Vladimir Putin
[ad_1]
Did former President Donald Trump recently make a “new deal” with Russian President Vladimir Putin? A Facebook video suggested so.
“DONALD TRUMP CALLED UP PUTIN TODAY AND MADE A NEW DEAL THAT WILL SAVE AMERICA,” read the caption of a June 23 Facebook video.
The post was flagged as part of Facebook’s efforts to combat false news and misinformation on its News Feed. (Read more about our partnership with Facebook.)
But there’s nothing timely here. The clip came from a Nov. 16, 2016, video from the Next News Network. We recently debunked other posts that shared older videos from the conservative YouTube channel and misrepresented them as current events.
Two days before this Next News Network clip was posted in 2016, Putin made his first phone call to then-President-elect Trump. Reports said Putin congratulated Trump, and the two men discussed issues including the threats and challenges facing the U.S. and Russia, national economies and their countries’ historical ties.
The Kremlin said the men discussed developing the relationship between the two countries “on the principles of equality, mutual respect and respective non-involvement in the other party’s domestic affairs.”
There have been no reports of a call between Trump and Putin in 2023.
We rate the claim that Trump called Putin and “made a new deal” in June 2023 False.
