A new inner-city precinct will soon connect Subiaco to the Perth CBD after a development application outlining the precinct’s design was approved.

The 1909 precinct’s Public Realm Development Application was approved earlier this month and ensures its parks, streets and public spaces are “sustainable and cohesive”.

The precinct will be built on the former Princess Margert Hospital site and named 1909 after the year the hospital opened.

The development application comes just months after a team of artists were commissioned to paint the former hospital’s heritage-listed 53m chimney stack.

While landscaping works will not begin until May 2024, Perth artist Abdul Abdullah and Californian artist David Momyer — known as MOMO — began the chimney’s artwork with a piece titled ‘Here Together’ earlier this month.

The artwork is expected to be completed by mid-December.

A group of six Subi East Bidi Markers which celebrate Noongar seasons, culture and history will also be part of the precinct.

Planning, Lands and Housing Minister John Carey said the new precinct would deliver “much-needed density” to Perth’s inner city.

“The public realm at 1909 has been designed to naturally integrate with about 1000 new dwellings to be delivered within the 1909 precinct,” he said.
