Placer County acquires more land to protect threatened species

(FOX40.COM) — The Placer County Conservation Program (PCCP) has added several hundred acres to its portfolio of protected lands with the acquisition of Riosa Redwing Ranch North.

The property, located west of the Southern Placer community of Sheridan, holds a significant variety of native habitats that support numerous species, according to PCCP.

In 2022, PCCP purchased the 560-acre southern portion of the property in 2022 with a $6.5 million grant.

This recent purchase adds the final 430 acres of the property with the aid of a second grant of $5.39 million.

The grants were provided through the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Section 6 Land Conservation Fund, the California Wildlife Conservation Board and Placer County.

“The acquisition of the north half of Redwing Ranch along with other neighboring PCCP and Placer Legacy lands represent a very large and contiguous block of approximately 3,000 acres of protected agriculture, open space, wetlands, stream, and species habitat,” said Placer County District 2 Supervisor Shanti Landon.

Redwing Ranch will border PCCP properties like the Bradley property, the Ellis Conservation Easement and the Yankee Slough Conservation Bank.

PCCP also owns the Sheridan Eas Vernal Pool Preserve on the northeast side of Riosa Road and Karchner Road.

The combined properties of the Riosa Redwing Ranch will provide nearly two miles of Yankee Slough and nearly 300 acres of land supporting wetlands, vernal pools and other riparian areas.

These varying landscapes across a 3,000-acre network of preserved and protected lands also provide crucial habitat for 20 special status species, threatened birds and state species of concern.
