"People don't really think about the need," food banks, shelters lack summer volunteers

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) — Over the summer, many local food banks and soup kitchens see a decrease in volunteers and donations.
“Outside of the holiday months, it is a little bit slower because people don’t really think about the need and the need is even bigger around kids,” Food Bank of CENC Director of Regional Development Whykeshia White said.
Joy Community Center and Soup Kitchen leaders said they faced similar troubles. “Last year, we had a great number, this year, it’s been kind of rough because we have people call in, get put on the list to volunteer and then don’t show,” JOY Assistant Co-Chair Shirley House said.
