Open is operated by G.O.L. Impresa Sociale Srl and is funded by advertising revenue, reader donations, and contributions from Facebook’s Third-Party Fact-Checking Program. The platform is recognized for its neutral and balanced reporting, covering a wide range of topics and presenting multiple viewpoints.
Open’s fact-checking initiative is notable for its detailed reports on viral social media claims. The platform’s coverage of political issues, such as PM Giorgia Meloni’s claims and the government’s “carrello tricolore” initiative, demonstrates its commitment to providing context and countering potential misinformation.
Despite occasional left-leaning bias in its political coverage, Open generally exhibits comprehensive and factual reporting. It has not failed any fact-checks in the last five years and is a verified signatory of the International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN).
MBFC rates Open as least biased for presenting fact-based information with minimal editorializing and high for factual reporting due to proper sourcing and serving as a certified fact-checker. The review was conducted by M. Huitsing on May 25, 2024.
