Officials: Volusia man who possessed ‘Mother of Satan’ chemicals now found with written destruction plans

A Lake Helen man accused of possessing extremely dangerous explosives in 2018 was found with plans to make more last week, the Florida Department of Corrections (FDOC) said.According to a violation report, officials say that during their warrantless planned search on May 21, Jared Coburn was found with a notebook that appeared to contain “lists of different chemicals and possible plans.”Investigators took photos of the notebook and sent copies to the Volusia County bomb squad commander, who confirmed the photos appeared to depict “plans to make destructive devices and explosives.”Upon further review of the photos, investigators also saw items that were on Coburn’s prohibited list, including Vaseline and model glue, which is a form of acrylic polymer.When asked about the notebook and items, Coburn questioned if it was illegal to possess them and maintained that he was doing nothing wrong, according to the violation report.In 2018, an anonymous tip led to the arrest of Coburn after the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office said he possessed a volatile chemical that had the potential to blow up a neighborhood block.”It is highly volatile. Al-Qaida has dubbed this chemical ‘The Mother of Satan.’ It was last used in the 2017, Paris attacks in 2015, and also used by the shoe bomber,” Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood said in 2018.The bomb squad moved the material, which was in mason jars, to a nearby field. It later tested positive for triacetone triperoxide (TATP).Because of this incident, the FDOC arrested Coburn and reccomends that his probation be revoked. Officials say he appears to be engaging in the same criminal activity that placed him on probation.”Coburn was in possession of restricted items and appears to be attempting to make or possess destructive devices. His behavior indicates that he is a danger to himself and the community,” the violation report says.Coburn is expected in court on Thursday afternoon and is being held on no bond.In the violation report the probation officer completed, she said, “Coburn did not provide any clarification as to why these items were in his bedroom, and he maintained he was not doing anything wrong.” She said he is a danger to the community and recommends revoking his probation.
