ASHEBORO, N.C. (WNCN) – The North Carolina Zoo recently crossed a historic milestone this past week.

The zoo located in Asheboro celebrated its 50th anniversary on Friday.

N.C. Zoo officials posted a message on social media, marking the notable occasion:

“Throughout our history, we’ve been home to a diverse array of remarkable animals, dedicated keepers, and passionate employees who work tirelessly behind the scenes. Join us in honoring this milestone by visiting the Zoo in 2024!”

In the post, the zoo also highlighted its first animal inhabitants, which were a pair of Galapagos tortoises named Tort and Retort.

“These two tortoises symbolize the early days of the North Carolina Zoo and are cherished deeply in our hearts,” the post said.

The North Carolina Zoo houses nearly 1,700 animals and more than 250 species that primarily originate from Africa and North America. As of July 2024, it’s one of only two state-supported zoos in the United States, along with the Minnesota Zoo.
