CHARLOTTE, N.C. — It’s safe to say no one saw this shooting coming. Elected Republicans and Democrats are reacting to former President Donald Trump being shot during his own rally.
Former President Trump’s campaign announced he is “fine and being checked out at a local medical facility.”
The two sides don’t often agree, but the Democrats and Republicans have made it clear violence is never an option.
Already several North Carolina elected officials have given their reaction through social media. On X, North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper wrote “violence has no place in our politics or communities,” going on to thank Secret Service and law enforcement for their work protecting former President Trump.
Others like North Carolina Congressman Greg Murphy and Rep. Jeff Jackson echoed the sentiment in their own posts to X.
Jackson wrote “whoever shot must be held accountable.” One politician in South Carolina feels the same.

NC Representative Jeff Jackson posted his statement on the attack of former President Donald Trump to X.
“Whenever we have this political fear mongering that’s going on throughout the country, I think this is what we end up with,” Republican South Carolina House Representative for District 48, Brandon Guffey said on his reaction to seeing Trump shot. “You know, we’ve heard often and often from Trump’s opponents that he’s going to be the end of democracy, and today someone tried to take matters into their own hands to end democracy,”
South Carolina Representative Brandon Guffey went on to say this shooting could be enough to keep people from getting involved in politics. He says he’s received death threats of his own before, and it is a scary reality that comes with being elected.
Guffey hopes cooler heads will prevail in the future and says the best thing American’s can do right now is to pray for those involved and those who were injured.
